BIOGRAPHY: Mahmoud holds BSc, MSc, and PhD in electrical, control and systems engineering, as well as, post-doctoral professional training in strategy, innovation and entrepreneurship. He completed his graduate studies in Germany, Sweden, and the UK. Mahmoud’s professional and scholarly expertise is in Innovation and Strategic Development, mainly in the higher education industry. His multidisciplinary publications spans over areas of engineering education, innovation, digital transformation, entrepreneurship, leadership, pedagogy, organizational development, knowledge based economy, and applied systems theory, with current 900+ google scholar citations.

Mahmoud expertise in exploiting innovation-based systems control and process engineering methods, into strategic development and education processes and organizational design (e.g. ENGINEERING the Education) is relatively unique, and he is among few globally experts in this area. These translational methods enable effective, accelerated, goal oriented, and systematic outputs. 

In scholarship, Mahmoud has ranked among top 50 scholars globally in the field of Engineering Education Research (EER) in terms of indexed publications number in Scopus (in the five years period 2012 till 2017).He published 4 Springer books (2 edited, and 2 authored of which one is upcoming), 5 book chapters, 60+ peer-reviewed conference and journal articles, and developed 40+ institutional report/framework or strategy. He attained several industry funds, academic recognitions/awards, and best papers distinctions from various organizations, as well as fellowships from University of Technology Sydney, University Science Malaysia, and from USA Department of State.

Mahmoud joined Qatar University in Fall 2011 as joint faculty between college of engineering and college of education, and progressed in innovation advisory and strategic development assignments with Engineering Dean’s Office, the Vice President and Chief Academic Officer Office, and the President Office, where he is currently Director of Strategic Initiatives Office and Associate Professor of Engineering. In his latest professional capacity, Mahmoud had a leading core technical role in QU 2022 transformation strategy development through refinement & integration of seven composing strategies, and technically shaping five of them (3 core, and 2 enabling). Mahmoud’s professional orientation is proactive, collaborative, systematic, and geared towards large-scale high impact sustainable developments.

Dr Oula Abu-Amsha, Chief Academic Officer, Jesuit Worldwide Learning, is a Syrian Computer Science professor and Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Science (University of St Quentin en Yvelines, France) with significant experience in educational technologies, curriculum development, and education in emergencies, having spent more than 12 years at higher education institutions in Damascus, as well as working for the World Bank and the UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia.

She also holds a Master’s degree in Statistic and Stochastic Processes from the University of Joseph Fournier (Grenoble I), France, and an engineering degree from the  National School of Computer Science and Applied Mathematics, France, with a specialisation in applied mathematics for the economy. Forced into exile, she started her activities in refugee education in 2014.

Dr Abu-Amsha served as Academic Adviser of Mosaik Education (formerly the Jamiya Project) for three and a half years, leading the development of programmes and support services specifically designed for Syrian refugee university students in the Middle East. Furthermore, she has been a visiting scholar in multiple higher education institutions in Switzerland since 2014.

Leonie Ackermann is currently enrolled in the master programme Computing in the Humanities. After completing their bachelor’s degree in Comparative Literature at Augsburg University in 2017 they were curious about the potential of the digital humanities to create new research tools and opportunities for interdisciplinary cooperation.

Parallel to their studies they have been involved in the students’ movement since 2015. In 2017 and 2018 they have represented Germany’s national union of students (fzs) in the European Students’ Union and have gained insight into European higher education politics. Since September 2019 they are part of fzs’s executive committee. Their focus is international higher education politics, quality of teaching and learning, and digitization.

Since October 2019 they are also part of the HFD working group #DigitalChangemaker.

Professor Abdalla Uba Adamu: Setting New Gold Standard in African ODL Administration.

Since his appointment in February 2016 as the Vice-Chancellor National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Professor Abdalla Uba Adamu, has driven some ground-breaking changes that have elevated the public awareness of ODL. Through carefully thought-out policies and aggressive pursuit of ideals of quality education for all; Professor Adamu’s leadership of NOUN has inspired unprecedented acceptance of ODL as a mode of learning not only in Nigeria but also in neighboring West African countries. Projecting a philosophy that hinges on equalisation of educational opportunities, Professor Adamu has devised strategies for reaching and providing university education to individuals who ordinarily would have been excluded. His leadership intervention saw to the introduction of free education/scholarship to prison inmates and enhancing their enrolment into the National Open University of Nigeria; escalation of institutional support in IDP camps to students/study centres displaced by insurgency and natural disasters in some parts of Nigeria; provision of free education/scholarships to all levels of university education to indigent students across Nigeria.

Professor Adamu’s commitment to quality and functional higher education anchored on Information and Communication Technology has benefited the university in many ways. First it has led to massive investment in ICT infrastructure and establishment of three new ICT related directorates in the last three years. These directorates and centers have amplified student learning experience, created interactive online portals for students and faculty, provided a learning system that offers interactive course contents in digital formats that are accessible anywhere, anytime and at a pace convenient for the students. The fructification of these efforts is responsible for the increased enrolment of Generation Z set of students into the NOUN programs thereby shooting the total student enrolment figure to slightly above half a million.

In recognition of the university’s competency in ICT, it won the right to host the World Banksupported African Center of Excellence for Technology Enhanced Learning (ACETEL). The Center is charged with the responsibility of developing human capacity and undertaking research in digital solutions including Artificial Intelligence that would lead to the utilisation of technology for education, and indeed all sectors of the economy in the West African subregion.

The quest for the mainstreaming of ODL as an alternative mode of study in Nigeria was one of the toughest battlegrounds for Professor Abdalla Uba Adamu. One of his stated objectives on assumption of duty as the Vice-Chancellor was how to maintain a university resembling other universities in Nigeria and yet differing from them on account of its ODL disposition. Most of the reforms undertaken in the university were meant to achieve this. Thus, from changing the taxonomy of academic structures of the university, to 2 democratizing leadership processes in the faculties, to initiating the amendment of the NOU Act of 1983 which the Visitor to the University magnanimously signed into Law in December 2018, and so on, the battle was to have a university that could compete with its peers across the country and beyond.

The global appreciation of these efforts has led to increased visibility and acceptance of the university. It has also led to upsurge in the demands for mentorship and the use of the university’s learning materials by other universities across Africa. The university students have responded massively to these initiatives such that previously weak students have reembraced the university. The result of this was easily visible during the university’s 8th convocation ceremony in March 2019 where the university awarded its degrees to 20,793 graduates – consisting of 53.3% female and 46.7% male – a figure that quadrupled the number of graduates produced by any university in Nigeria in a single graduation year. Consequently, NOUN provides more opportunities for women to become empowered with higher education than any Nigerian university.

Professor Abdalla Uba Adamu received his D.Phil. in Science Education at Sussex University, United Kingdom in 1988. He was a Fulbright African Senior Research Fellow at the Center for Studies in Higher Education, University of California, Berkeley, United States from 1991 to 1992. He was also Rockefeller Foundation Visiting Fellow, The Bellagio Center, Italy in November 1983. He became Professor of Science Education and Comparative Higher Education in 1997, after which he shifted his research focus to media and communication. By 2012 he had acquired another professorship in Media and Cultural Communication due to the volume and depth of his research on transglobal media, Islam and culture in northern Nigeria, making him the only double professor in Nigerian university system. Before his appointment to NOUN, he was in the Department of Information and Media Studies, having migrated from the Department of Science Education, all at Bayero University Kano, Nigeria.

Professor Adamu served as a Visiting Professor at the University of Cologne (Germany), University of Florida, Rutgers State University New Jersey (United States) and the University of Warsaw (Poland). In addition, he has delivered special lectures at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London; Barnard College, Columbia University, New York; University of Basel, Switzerland; Humboldt University, Berlin, the Polish Academy of Science, Warsaw, Poland, as well as Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin, Germany. He was the country partner for Volkswagen Foundation research initiative Passages of Culture (2008- 2013), which shares knowledge and research findings in popular culture between African (Bayero University, Kano, Nigeria; University of Cameroon, Yaoundé; and University of Wits, South Africa), Germany (University of Freiburg) and Switzerland (University of Basel) universities and scholars.

Professor Adamu is a filmmaker, documentarist and music director.

Shakira Akabor is an Academic tutor and PhD candidate at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.

She has over 12 years’ experience teaching Maths and Social Sciences in a mainstream classroom at primary school level. She is especially passionate about the ways we can include rather than exclude children in our classrooms, especially those learners with different learning needs.

Shirley Alexander is Professor of Learning Technologies at the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) where she is Deputy Vice-Chancellor & Vice President (Education and Students).

She has been a member of three successive national government committees advising on improvements to higher education teaching and learning and chaired a national committee advising the Minister for Education on the best uses of technology in K-12 education.

Shirley has led the learning.futures strategy at UTS (https://www.uts.edu.au/research-and-teaching/learning-and-teaching/learningfutures/how-our-students-learn). Bryan Alexander is an internationally known futurist, researcher, writer, speaker, consultant, and teacher, working in the field of how technology transforms education.

He completed his English language and literature PhD at the University of Michigan in 1997, with a dissertation on doppelgangers in Romantic-era fiction and poetry.

Then Bryan taught literature, writing, multimedia, and information technology studies at Centenary College of Louisiana.  There he also pioneered multi-campus interdisciplinary classes, while organizing an information literacy initiative.

From 2002 to 2014 Bryan worked with the National Institute for Technology in Liberal Education (NITLE), a non-profit working to help small colleges and universities best integrate digital technologies.  With NITLE he held several roles, including co-director of a regional education and technology center, director of emerging technologies, and senior fellow.  Over those years Bryan helped develop and support the nonprofit, grew peer networks, consulted, and conducted a sustained research agenda.

In 2013 Bryan launched a business, Bryan Alexander Consulting, LLC.  Through BAC he consults throughout higher education in the United States and abroad.  Bryan also speaks widely and publishes frequently, with articles appearing in venues including The Atlantic Monthly, Inside Higher Ed.  He has been interviewed by and featured in the Washington Post, MSNBC,  US News and World Report, National Public Radio, the Chronicle of Higher Education, the National Association of College and University Business Officers, Pew Research, Campus Technology, and the Connected Learning Alliance.

Dr. Julian Allen is the Chief Learning Innovations Officer at Georgia State University and leads a team of over 100 full and part time learning professionals. He has over 20 years of experience leading innovation in the use of learning technologies and creative pedagogies. He formed the Learning Innovations Team and built its current home, the Center for Excellence in Teaching & Learning, supporting faculty in transforming learning throughout the institution. Deborah Arnold is national and international projects coordinator at AUNEGe, the French digital university for economics and management. She develops, coordinates and participates in a number of projects on topics such as active learning for soft skills development, open virtual mobility and digital credentials, in addition to national work around resources and frameworks in the discplinary fieldof management studies.

Before joining AUNEGe in September 2018, Deborah ran the educational technology and distance learning department at the University of Burgundy and was in charge of the digital education strategy area of the digital roadmap. Prior to that, she worked for over 10 years as a project manager at Vidéoscop, the audiovisual and multimedia production department of Université Nancy 2. From 2010 to 2016 she served on the Executive Committee of EDEN (European Distance and E-learning Network) and held the position of Vice-President Communication (2015-2016). She is an EDEN Senior Fellow and currently serves on the EDEN Fellows Coucil board.

Paul Bacsich is the Founder and Managing Director of Matic Media Ltd, a consultancy in the UK active in online learning since 1996. He is also Professor of Practice for the University of West Indies Open Campus, which is headquartered in Barbados.

In addition he consults for the SeroHE division of Sero Consulting Ltd as a Senior Associate: he was a member of the Sero team who recently reviewed Learning Technology Support at the University of Oxford, and currently he is leading a 12-month project at Sero to develop an accredited vocational short online course to teach teachers to teach online for Wey Education (who run Interhigh Virtual School and other similar entities).

He is also Visiting Professor for University of Derby Online Learning (UDOL) in the UK.

He has a long-standing interest in Open Education via a large EU project (POERUP) and several EU/European Parliament studies: in particular he is Co-Coordinator of the Open Education Working Group and an Ambassador for the global advocacy of OER and a member of the OER Advocacy Committee of ICDE.  He was a co-author for the JRC 2017 report “Policy Approaches to Open Education in 28 Member States”.

His interests in leadership in e-learning were developed during the Erasmus+ D-TRANSFORM project 2014-17, which drew on and continued his work over 20 years on management of open and distance learning.

In addition to his public work he consults for a number of international, government, commercial, venture fund and university clients on market/competitor/pricing research, policy, education funding models and retention strategies. He has recently finalised a report on credit recognition and transfer for online masters' programmes, for a university client in Canada.

In 2015-16 Paul chaired the review panel for the Vision and Strategy Appraisal of the UK Open University Library, where he interviewed over 70 staff and students and carried out substantial comparative and policy research. He also chaired the E-learning review panel for Uppsala University, with three days of intensive meetings and presentations, and spent four months chairing a task force for the National Forum for Learning and Teaching in Ireland to prepare a scoping document on infrastructure issues related to online learning.

Some of his recent thinking can be found in his UNESCO policy brief on "Alternative Models of Education Delivery" and in a paper for the "Open Education 2030" higher education workshop run by the EU. He remains very interested in "Multiversity" models and competence-based provision, based on his earlier studies on "Time and e-learning", developed from a speech given in Austria, a country with which he has increasing links.

He is a co-founder of MultEversity, a start-up in online/blended post-secondary education which aims in due course to be an accredited university and higher vocational provider. He also has had involvement in other early-stage online providers over the last six years and has done several studies of them.

In the university phase of his career he was a researcher at Oxford University, had many roles over 25 years at the UK Open University, and was for seven years Professor of Telematics at Sheffield Hallam University and then a Director at the UK e-University. He was also Visiting Professor at Middlesex University and Advisor to the Rector of the Arab Open University.

He has knowledge of and/or experience in higher education in many developed countries.

He is also Visiting Professor for University of Derby Online Learning (UDOL) in the UK.

He has a long-standing interest in Open Education via a large EU project (POERUP) and several EU/European Parliament studies: in particular he is Co-Coordinator of the Open Education Working Group and an Ambassador for the global advocacy of OER and a member of the OER Advocacy Committee of ICDE.  He was a co-author for the JRC 2017 report “Policy Approaches to Open Education in 28 Member States”.

His interests in leadership in e-learning were developed during the Erasmus+ D-TRANSFORM project 2014-17, which drew on and continued his work over 20 years on management of open and distance learning.

In addition to his public work he consults for a number of international, government, commercial, venture fund and university clients on market/competitor/pricing research, policy, education funding models and retention strategies. He has recently finalised a report on credit recognition and transfer for online masters' programmes, for a university client in Canada.

In 2015-16 Paul chaired the review panel for the Vision and Strategy Appraisal of the UK Open University Library, where he interviewed over 70 staff and students and carried out substantial comparative and policy research. He also chaired the E-learning review panel for Uppsala University, with three days of intensive meetings and presentations, and spent four months chairing a task force for the National Forum for Learning and Teaching in Ireland to prepare a scoping document on infrastructure issues related to online learning.

Some of his recent thinking can be found in his UNESCO policy brief on "Alternative Models of Education Delivery" and in a paper for the "Open Education 2030" higher education workshop run by the EU. He remains very interested in "Multiversity" models and competence-based provision, based on his earlier studies on "Time and e-learning", developed from a speech given in Austria, a country with which he has increasing links.

He is a co-founder of MultEversity, a start-up in online/blended post-secondary education which aims in due course to be an accredited university and higher vocational provider. He also has had involvement in other early-stage online providers over the last six years and has done several studies of them.

In the university phase of his career he was a researcher at Oxford University, had many roles over 25 years at the UK Open University, and was for seven years Professor of Telematics at Sheffield Hallam University and then a Director at the UK e-University. He was also Visiting Professor at Middlesex University and Advisor to the Rector of the Arab Open University.

He has knowledge of and/or experience in higher education in many developed countries.

Kirill Barannikova is head of the department of strategic growth in Moscow City University (MCU, www.mgpu.ru). MCU - is one of the leading teacher university in Russia. Working in MCU Kirill has led a number of project for Moscow schools and Moscow government.

I am a PhD-researcher on learning in virtual reality at Ghent University. Recently, as the project lead, I launched VRkeer (translated in English: traffic) a virtual reality serious game teaching children how to ride a bicycle safely in traffic. The game is developed for Oculus Quest, aimed at children between 10 and 14 years old (however interest has been shown from older children, even adults). We won the Smart Belgium Awards with VRkeer and are now running in the International Educational Games Competition at ECGBL19.

At this moment I am investigating the benefits and constraints of virtual reality in educational settings at Thomas More University of Applied Sciences. 

Both at Ghent University and Thomas More my focus is the instructional design of the virtual reality learning environment.

Before I started as a researcher, I was a teacher for 15 years. This field expertise is of great value in my work as a researcher, combining both research and practice.

Dr. Benoît Bossavit is a recent postdoc fellow at Trinity College Dublin funded from the EU H2020 under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Career-FIT programme with Entreprise Ireland. Benoît passed his Msc in Computer Science at Bordeaux (France) where he specialized in Virtual Reality technology. He polished his technical skills working at the research institute INRIA for three years where he was involved in the development of three different research projects. Afterwards, Benoît did his PhD at the Public University of Navarre (Spain) where he explored the potential of Natural User Interfaces (body motion-based interaction techniques) in different educational contexts such as severe cognitive and motor disabilities, high functioning autism and typically developing children. He adopted different design methodologies to involve stakeholders (teachers and children) in the design and development of educational games. Alike most of the research in the field, he sought for educational tools to help and support children with Special Educational Needs by focusing on cognitive skills explicitly, considering the use of the body as a mean. However, the use of the body also plays an integral part in the development process of children, and the use of technology to early detect potential developmental disabilities remains underexplored. And that is where he is focusing his research now.

Dr. Elizabeth Boyle is a reader in Psychology at the University of the West of Scotland with wide ranging interests in varied aspects of psychology including cognition, skills, attitudes, self, identity, motives and emotions.

Recently her research has focused on psychological aspects of technology and e-learning, looking especially at engagement and learning in digital games and individual difference characteristics of social media users. She has published journal and conference papers, edited books and book chapters in these areas.

Over the past 8 years she has been Principal Investigator on 3 European projects that have involved the design, development and evaluation of serious games (RU EU?, Youth@work and CHERMUG). These projects are all at the cutting edge of technology, looking at how the features of games that engage players can be used to support learning. The most recent game, the RUEU? game, aims to support international students in understanding European identity.

Nina Brandner is a young development professional. She first became engaged in the e-learning sector as social entrepreneur managing the international social start-up GlobalMatch. Since June, Nina is part of the newly founded Africa Cloud project at the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH. Owing to her experience in content development, learner support and interface design, Ms. Brandner’s current fields of responsibility include content management, quality assurance and user management. Robert BURMANJER is currently Head of Unit for Knowledge Management in the Directorate General for International Cooperation and Development, European Commission.

Mar Camacho, PhD is a Former Lecturer on Educational Technology at the Faculty of Education of the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (Catalonia). She taught in graduate and postgraduate programs related to Educational Technology, with particular emphasis on Mobile Learning and emergent technologies. She is co-author of the first monography on Mobile Learning in Spain, Portugal and Latin America and has led a nation-wide research on the use of tablets in schools and their impact on learning.

Colleen Connors has over 16 years of professional experience spanning technology and finance. Colleen is currently the Chief Operating Officer for Verif‐y. Prior to the role of Chief Operating Officer for Verif‐y she was the Director of Systems Operations where she was responsible for Verif‐y's data management, algorithms, and processing. She is also a cofounder at Women + Blockchain a curated, community newsletter supporting women, education and news within the Blockchain global ecosystem. Colleen’s career started in Global finance with Schroder Investment Management. Her last role during her 7+ year tenure at Schroders was as a Global Fixed Income Fund Manager based out of their headquarters in London. My name is Marco and I work as a vice-dean at Avans University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands. I am the team leader of our Business Administration and Finance Programma, which involves 50 teachers and 1200 students. Johannes Cronjé was born in Davenport Iowa in 1959 when his parents were there doing more than just studying.

At the age of eight months he persuaded his parents to return to South Africa where he attended an Afrikaans primary school and then Pretoria Boys High School where he matriculated in 1976.

Following this he enrolled at the University of Pretoria where he obtainend the BA majoring in Afrikaans, English and Anthropology, the BA honours as well as a Teachers' diploma before reporting for military service at the Infantry School, Oudtshoorn.  During his second year of national service he completed an MA in Afrikaans literature while serving on the Angolan border.

He then taught English and Afrikaans at Pretoria Boys High until 1986 when he was appointed lecturer in Language Communication at Technikon Pretoria.  He taught a student population ranging from secretaries, dental assistants and managers through to engineers and journalists.  During this time he was involved in several programmes involving intercultural communication, in both the formal educational sector and in the service industry.

He obtained a Doctorate in Afrikaans Literature in 1990 and then a Masters Degree in Computer-Assisted Education from the University of Pretoria. From 1994 to 2007 he was a professor of computers in education with the University of Pretoria. Currently he is the Dean of the Faculty of Informatics and Design at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. He has also been visiting professor at Sudan University of Science and Technology, Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia; the University of Joensuu, Finland, and the University of Bergen, Norway.

He has supervised or co-supervised 70 Masters and 42 Doctoral students and published more than 38 research papers.

His hobbies include public speaking, road running, and playing the mp3 Player. He is married to Franci and they have 3 children, and a dog.

With a scientific background, Olivier Crouzet got a Master degree as an IT engineer. During scholarship, he acted both as a technical assistant and a teaching assistant. After 2 years as system administrator in the 3rd French Internet service provider, he developed during thirteen years a well-known IT school which became a French major institution.

He designed the pedagogical model, and made it evolve. Based on this educational success, a new IT school '42' is created in 2013, along with Nicolas Sadirac, Kwame Yamgnane and Florian Bucher, promoting an even more advanced training methodology, called Peer-Learning. Olivier Crouzet designed this model: 100%-project-based, without any teacher, lecture, nor knowledge transfer. Students debate, exchange ideas, try, fail, try again, to reach the goal, and finally evaluate their peers.

Founded and funded by Xavier Niel, owner of one of the four French telecom company, '42' is totally free for the students. In this spirit of social opening, Olivier Crouzet, while still evolving the pedagogical model of the school, is also promoting evolution in the French education system through various conferences

Working with learning and development for 20 years in both banking and retail, Binnaz honed her skills as a trainer and learning designer. An excellent facilitator, consultant and learning designer, and accomplished project leader, she has delivered many global learning designs for IKEA including a Brandon Hall gold award for best blended learning 2009. Three years ago Binnaz became a senior manager with a 20 person team who are responsible for content design and delivery as well as information architecture and user experience in Inter IKEA Systems BV.

As Technology Director at HEC, Jacques leads collaborative initiatives in technological R&D, in cooperation with French universities, high-tech companies from the Systematic Paris Region cluster and academic partners from Europe and French-speaking Africa.

These projects involve next-generation networks, distance learning as well as evaluation and learning analytics.

Jacques is the coordinator for the PERICLES project, an e-education project from the national Investments for the Future program (Programme des Investissements d'Avenir).

As a Research Scientist at UWF’s Innovation Institute, Dave Dawson integrates emerging technologies into collaborative instructional design and development processes for online professional development, performance support, and immersive learning projects. He serves as special consultant for the Institute on human performance and systems design for government and industry clients.

Dr. Dawson's recent projects include working with a large and diverse multinational corporation to integrate responsible stewardship of the environment into the culture of their workforce using technologies like 360 degree video, developing curriculum and providing instructional oversight for the fully immersive STEM program of the National Flight Academy, deploying BLE beacon technology to create awareness and generate interest in STEM disciplines near centers of STEM actvity on campus, and serving on the program committee of the regional annual iTENWIRED IT conference in Pensacola.

Matt Day is an Instructional Systems Designer (ISD) with over twenty years experience in the field of training design and development. Matt is originally from the UK but since 2012 he has lived and worked in Germany. He works for Telespazio VEGA Deutschland GmbH and is based in Cologne at the European Astronaut Centre (EAC),part of the European Space Agency.

Matt's role at the EAC within the Space Training Team is to provide consultancy and support for the development of astronaut and ground crew training (classroom and online), in preparation for manned missions to the International Space Station (ISS).

In recent years, Matt has been instrumental in setting up an in-house capability and process to produce video training for astronauts, to be viewed on board the ISS.

Before moving to Germany Matt worked for several companies across a range of industries, spending eight years at Leonardo Helicopters as the senior ISD supporting pilot and technician training.

Pasquale De Caprio is a Learning & Development Specialist at Bank J. Safra Sarasin, where he manages the Group Learning Management System and coordinates all the mandatory training activities of the Bank.

Pasquale has a Ph.D. in History and after years of scientific research in Italy and Germany worked in Berlin for the chemical company BASF among others.

Inge de Waard (PhD) is currently leading the learning part of an InnoEnergy project that alleviates skill and competency gaps by combining Artificial Intelligence (AI, specifically Natural Language Processing), Human Resources (HR), learning analytics to provide a personalised learning trajectory (including micro-credits, blockchain in education, informal and formal learning options...). This project combines the expertise of people working at InnoEnergy, The Open University (UK), FutureLearn and many European University partners working on renewable energy.

Since 1999, Inge has set-up, coordinated and developed several innovative online, blended and mobile learning projects, always with a focus on participation and durability. These projects involved partners and individuals from both the Northern (Canada, United States, Italy, Belgium, Ireland, Germany, UK) and Southern regions (South-Africa, India, Peru, Morocco). As an avid enthusiast of open science, she is an active international speaker giving keynotes and guest lectures, as well as providing and receiving knowledge input through seminars, SIGs and workshops.   

Enlightened by the first connectivist MOOCs, she set up the first MOOC on mobile learning, called MobiMOOC (2011 & 2012). This was a community and project-oriented MOOC, enabling international learners to realize their own project by the end of the MOOC.

The field of Learning & Development has always been my passion and as Senior Global L&D adviser for AkzoNobel I have the opportunity to make a change in the way our employees perform and how they enjoy growing at AkzoNobel.

I have been in charge of setting up the Health, Safety & Environment Faculty to make sure our employees go home safely, but also enjoy the way they learn to be safe at their job. Learning while working has been key for this as well as making sure our license to operate programs are reaching the right change in behavior.
After a few years I had the opportunity to broaden my scope to other Functions and programs where I could extend my impact by implementing all kinds of different approaches to learning from learning on-the-job, virtual learning, social learning, evaluating learning and the way we run the training admin side of the company.

In my current role in the AkzoNobel Academy I'm responsible for raising the L&D knowledge level in the company, implementing a new LMS system, creating and implementing a new L&D operating model, designing and developing strategic business program and thinking about the future of work. A great role to share my passion for learning and to have a real impact in the company by making sure every employee has the possibility to develop in a great impactful way.

My background as a primary school teacher and a L&D consultant helps me every day in working with others and to transfer the message of L&D which is meaningful, impactful and is what the employee likes and needs. Therefore I have also started writing LinkedIn articles to share projects I have done and share my learnings to helps others. Sharing knowledge is key in spreading the learning message!

Dr Maren Deepwell has been CEO of ALT, the Association for Learning Technology since 2012, shaping the direction of education technology and driving the field forward internationally.

With a background in Anthropology, Dr Deepwell’s particular focus is on a critical perspective on the development and future of technology in education, professionalisation and skills in Learning Technology including development of the CMALT accreditation framework and leveraging technology to create greater equity in education.

Recent projects include open policy development, edtech start ups and organisational transformation which puts her commitment to open leadership into practice. Her work is bridging Learning Technology discourse across sectors in the UK and internationally.

Robbie Delaere combines freelance work for television with teaching since 2002. As a broadcast professional his teaching mantra is "Learning by doing". He trained journalists, multimedia artists and film students to shoot, edit and tell compelling audiovisual stories. The challenges entertaining a tv audience are not that different from keeping students engaged. He loves to travel and spread the news on blended learning, activating students and his favorite LMS (Canvas, since 2014).

Dr. Annette Deschner developed the Erasmus+ project “CultureShake“ including the EU topics digital competences and inclusion. She has a background in Cultural Studies and CLIL.

She is a lecturer at the Transdisciplinary Institute of Social Science at the University of Education Karlsruhe, Germany. Her work experience includes tertiary to primary education with teaching expertise on secondary and university level. On a regular basis, she delivers professional development and training for secondary and primary teachers.

She is the author of articles related to didactics and has several peer-reviewed articles published on CLIL.

She holds a Master in English and Theology and a PhD in English Literature from the Ruprecht – Karls University Heidelberg. In the DFG research group “Religion and Normativity“ she was a doctoral researcher.

Kyle Dickson directs the AT&T Learning Studio in Abilene, Texas, enabling students and faculty to craft media messages for a global audience. Since 2005 he has worked at Abilene Christian University supporting faculty in podcasting, course blogging, and mobile learning. In 2011 he became director of the Learning Studio, part collaborative learning space, part media production sandbox. Presentations and workshops include EDUCAUSE, EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative, New Media Consortium, and the Handheld Learning Conference. Jean-Malik Dumas is a Senior Lecturer in Tilburg University, The Netherlands, and the current Teaching Innovation Coordinator for Tilburg School of Economics and Management (TiSEM). As an experienced educator, he builds on his dual technical – managerial background to inspire and support fellow educators through the digital transformation process of higher education.

He joined the French Navy in 1990 as IT Manager and assistant in ergonomic studies, then he worked in the Ukraine as Chief Technical Officer in TV production and developed his own consulting business. Shahrzad is the lead video producer at Vyond, an online do-it-yourself platform for creating animated videos. She collaborates with Vyond's marketing, customer success, and sales teams to create engaging video content for customers and prospects. Marwa El Nokrashy

Ms. Marwa worked for seven years in the ICT field moving up the ladder from being designer and developer to being manager and consultant.  After that she made a shift in her career to invest her skills and knowledge in the socio-economic development using ICT as a tool. Both the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology(MCIT) and the United Nations Development Program UNDP-Egypt were interested in her to work at Egypt ICT Trust Fund (ICT-TF) - a mechanism created between the MCIT and the UNDP to promote the use of ICT in development- as a Partnerships in Development Deputy Director.

Through her work in the development field she contributed to designing several ICT4D initiatives. She stands behind attracting investments from international organizations, establishing development partnerships, and the promotion of concerted national efforts to implement many developmental initiatives that support literacy, education, Arabic e-content, health, women empowerment, youth employment, and enabling persons with disabilities.

 She has also contributed in promoting Egypt ICT Trust Fund’s projects and best practices worldwide, many of which have won awards such as awarded such as the World Summit Award, Stockholm Challenge, and UAE Educational IT challenge, The Arab e-content Award, E-India Award and Pan Arab Web Award.

Marina Encheva was awarded a PhD degree in Information Retrieval Systems from Sofia University ‘St. Kliment Ohridski’ in 2006. Her doctoral thesis is entitled ‘Adaptability of the Models for Distance Learning in Library and Information Sciences through the Internet’. Dr. Encheva was a part-time Assistant Professor at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” (2007-2010). Since 2010, she has been a full-time Assistant Professor at the University of Library Studies and Information Technologies (ULSIT), giving lectures and seminars in E-learning; Electronic Resources and Metadata; Information Market; Business Information Systems; Information Analysis, etc.

Her research interests are in the field of: Technology-enhanced Learning; Information and Digital Literacy; Game-based Learning; Project Management; Library Education.

Dr. Encheva is an author of a monograph (Game-based Approaches in Information Literacy Training, 2018), 2 textbooks (Automated Information Systems and Information Brokering, 2014) and of more than 50 scientific articles. Encheva has experience as a librarian at the Centre for Advanced Study in Sofia and as an expert at the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Bulgaria.

She has been working on a number of projects funded by the EU (as a manager and a team member) amongst which: 'Information Literacy: a Game-based Learning Approach for Avoiding Fake Content' (2017-onward), 'Distance learning in Library and Information Sciences and Print Communications' (2012-2014), ‘Introduction of electronic management of administrative and information services in recognition of higher education diplomas’ (2009-2011), etc.

Since 2004 Marina Encheva is a member of the European Distance and E-Learning Network (EDEN) and since 2018 - a member of the Executive Committee of the European Bureau of Library, Information and Documentation Associations (EBLIDA).

Matt spent over 10 years working in television and film as a cinematographer and editor before crossing into academia as a media educator, consultant, and creator.

I view Learning & Development as a kind of service which follows a similar life-cycle to product development. It is said that the term 'learning experience design' was coined in 2007 - that is when I began my career in a traditional classroom setting as a teacher of Business English. The format never felt quite right to me and soon, I started to explore how technology can support my students in their learning journey. 12 years later, having gone through the blended learning hype and e-Learning craze in the corporate world, having tested every available content authoring tool on the market, experimented with a full array of digital learning platforms - I have come to realize that the principles behind successful learning are similar to those behind building long-lasting habits, regardless of how advanced the technology is and how eager we are to assume that digital means better.

I work as a learning manager for the tech division of Zalando, a major online fashion platform from Germany, often recognized as one of the biggest success cases in the European e-commerce industry. Professor Lizbeth Goodman is Chair of Creative Technology Innovation and Full Professor of Inclusive Design at UCD, and also a Senior Advisor to the Innovation Academy and the Leonardo Panel of the Science Gallery (for TCD). Denise Gramß from the University of Applied Management is a psychologist. During several years of research experience, she examined learning and human factors in human-machine interaction. Further, she has conducted research into fundamental learning competencies and digital learning in vocational education and training as well as learning processes in human-machine interaction. In the MeQ:ino project she is currently developing and shaping specialist concepts for describing and improving media competence and its implementation in various companies.

Cristine Gusmão is an associate professor at Federal University of Pernambuco.

She is a permanent member of the Postgraduate Program in Biomedical Engineering – UFPE. She coordinates the Research Group – SABER – Educational and Social Technologies and UNA-SUS (Open University of Unique System of Health) at UFPE. She has a Scholarship for Productivity and Technological Development and Innovative Extension - Level 2 (CNPq - National Council for Scientific and Technological Development).

Jan Haarhuis is an Educationalist. Since 2014 he is leading the University-wide programme Educate-it that supports teachers as they future-proof and enhance their teaching practice. Educate-it helps teachers to innovate their teaching practice by incorporating Blended Learning and using the available IT tools to engage students and clear the logjams that obstruct effective teaching. A big part of the Educate-it goal is to increase awareness and acknowledgement of cultural and organizational change and gives specific attention to quality and research as a driver for educational change.

In 2016, Jan received the Dutch Change maker SURF education award in the category ICT and Education Professionals.

Jörg Hafer studied pedagogy, sociology and philosophy in Frankfurt a. M., Karlsruhe and Leiden (NL). He works in the e-learning sector since 1999, in an international company, then company founder and owner of an e-learning company. Courtney Hartzell is a graduate student in the International Higher Education master’s degree program at Boston College. Courtney actively presents on issues of Internationalisation of the Curriculum (IoC).

I am an e-learning developer and digital marketer at IÐAN vocational and educational center in Reykjavik, Iceland.  My current role as an e-learning developer is to develop, promote and support digital learning practices within IÐAN in continuing education for various industries. Martin Hawksey is Chief Innovation, Community and Technology Officer for the Association for Learning Technology. Martin's career began as a learning technologist in the UK Higher Education sector and has gone on to hold advisory roles within the educational technology sector for a number of UK government funded services. In these roles, he has supported staff in the exploration and adoption of innovative approaches to learning and teaching.

As part of his role Martin is responsible community strategy implementing a number of initiatives including the development of the ALT Members #altc Twitter hashtag. Since 2014 this has been promoted as the primary tag for sharing ALT activities as well as becoming the official ALT Annual Conference hashtag. To provide actionable insight to the development of the hashtag Martin has developed a number of free tools for measuring social media impact on Twitter utilizing Google Sheets as a platform for data capture and analysis. Dr. Anja Hawlitschek is currently working as research associate at Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences in the project “Industrial eLab”. This project which is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research addresses the usage of remote laboratories for teaching and learning. Her research focuses on instructional design for blended learning, e-learning and game-based learning.

In recent years, the organisation has undertaken a major strategic shift towards a flatter, more collaborative working style focused on delivering scientific knowledge and learning - in the form it is needed and at the time it is needed - to European policy makers. A 20 year veteran of the European institutions, Paul is known as an internal innovator, and has several internal innovation prizes in his collection. Recently, Paul has turned his attention to bringing together the disparate classroom-based, specialised learning activities which take place across the EU institutions into a coherent, strategic and modern resource for the stakeholders of the institutions and which will be delivered through a new Commission portal known as the EU Academy (online mid next year). Paul's work in knowledge management is recognised globally and he has been a frequent conference speaker on this subject, and a champion of people- and community-centred approaches to organising and sharing knowledge and learning in large organisations. Olivier Heidmann is lead developer and designer in serious games projects, responsible for designing and creating virtual experiment demonstrators.

He has a Master Degree in Parallel Computing from the Louis Pasteur University of Strasbourg, France.

He also taught computer science, mathematics and management to students ranging from 14 years old to adults for 7 years.

My name is Patrick Heinsch and I am a senior research assistant in the project "RoboPraX" at the Philipps-University Marburg. Within the project I am responsible for the creation of MOOCs, the maintenance of our humanoid robots (Pepper and NAO) as well as for the development of applications. I received my Master's degree in "Linguistics and Web Development" and wrote my thesis about "Humanoid Robots in the financial sector". Afterwards I worked in the project H.E.A.R.T. (2016-2019) - Humanoid Emotional Assistant Robots in Teaching -, also at the Philipps-University Marburg, which explored new ways of teaching and learning in higher education by using "Pepper" as assistant. Additionally, I gained practical insights of teaching and learning during my work as language teacher in Brazil.

Drs. Mabelle Hernández currently is programme managerof the University-wide Educate-it programme (innovation and Technology) and responsible for the implementation of Blended Learning and Educational change at Utrecht University. Before she was programme manager Education and ICT at the Faculty of Humanities. 

Intercultural communication and sharing educational experiences and successes always had her interest. She therefore participated as a researcher in 2 projects in the LLL Programme funded by the European Commission: Networked Interaction in Foreign Language Acquisition and Research (2012) and Telecollaboration for intercultural language acquisition (2014).

In 2014 she graduated as a certified mediator. Clara Höltermann is head of research and product development in the social enterprise Studio2B Gmbh in Berlin.

She holds a masters degree in social science of the Humboldt University in Berlin with a focus on empirical research and education. Clara started to work at Studio2B in April 2017. Together with an interdisciplinary team, she has built up the career orientation programm Dein erster Tag which gives students the opportunity to experience their first day as an apprentice in numerous professions through virtual job site tours.

Since January 2019, she is also responsible for the further development of virtual reality experiences for education and vocational training. In this position, she is leading a project in which interactive 360°- trainings are being developed to strengthen social skills for young professionals.

Daniel Devatman Hromada is since August 2018 UdK’s Juniorprofessor for Digital Education affiliated to both Einstein Center Digital Future (ECDF) as well as Berlin University of the Arts.

Born in 1982 in Bratislava, he holds bachelor degrees in humanities from Charles University (Prague) and in linguistics from University of Nice Sophia-Antipolis;a master degree in artificial and natural cognition from Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes (Paris).

In 2016, a successful defense of his thesis “Evolutionary modelis of ontogeny of linguistic categories”, entitled Hromada to carry a double doctorate from both Slovak Technical University (cybernetics) as well as University Paris 8 – Lumieres (psychology).

He is a founder and first senator of the oldest Slovak digital community kyberia.sk. Main project of his current interest is design, coding and deployment of a book-like, speech-based "digital primer".

Paul Hunter comes originally from Belfast, Northern Ireland. After successfully completing his Bachelors and Masters degree at Cambridge University and post graduate study at Oxford University, Paul moved to Switzerland.

As Director of IMD’s Corporate Learning Network, Paul works with worldwide organizations across the globe helping them to evolve as learning organizations. Marieta Jansen van Vuuren is a former teacher from South Africa who majored in languages and started her teaching career in 1984. She holds a doctorate in Sociolinguistics - Afrikaans - with the focus on Language and Internet-based Electronic Communication using Corpus Linguistics as a research method.  In 2000 she joined the Vaal University of Technology in Vanderbijlpark Gauteng, lecturing English and Communication studies. In 2004 she joined the North-West University(NWU) – School of Languages - where she lectured Sociolinguistics to undergraduate students. Marieta was subsequently appointed in the School of Educational Sciences in 2008 where she lectured language teaching (Afrikaans) to education students and provided supervision to Honours, Masters and PhD students.

In 2012 she was appointed at the Academic Development and Support Unit of the NWU – Vaal Triangle Campus, responsible for the implementation of elearning projects and innovation and technology integration. Her current position is that of Senior Academic Developer in the Directorate Special projects and Research with the focus on Technology Innovation projects, research in Higher Education, OER and micro credentials and the mentorship of the Academic Developer.

Current fields of interest and research and publications include topics such as transforming education in a blended learning environment, eLearning and mobile learning development and the integration of video in Education. Research on curriculum redesign and implementation thereof for blended learning environments and the development of online learning modules as well as the integration of video as assessment tool are current research projects. MA. Christina Soegaard Jensen is senior lecturer and project manager at Business Academy Aarhus, Denmark. Her focus is on the rapidly emerging skill gaps that forges digital upgrades of existing curriculums and the development of suitable didactics accordingly. 

Christina is initiator and project manager of the research project Datacompetent Students. The project ensures a consistent line for teaching basic data competence across the diverse programmes and diciplines at the academy. Dr. Erik Jentges is the educational developer at ETH Zurich’s Department of Management, Technology and Economics (D-MTEC). He consults and works on a range of activities from conceptualizing and re-designing courses to developing feedback and evaluation processes with faculty.

Erik has been a lecturer in Sociology, Political Science, Media Studies and Management at universities in Switzerland and abroad. He has worked for many years with several NGOs on intercultural youth exchanges and adult education across Europe.

I am an e-learning and web developer at IÐAN vocational and educational center, a non-profit organization serving various industries in Iceland. I also teach at Fjölbrautaskólinn í Breiðholti, one of Iceland's largest community colleges.

My background is in secondary and continuing education with an emphasis on the practical use of digital technologies for teachers and students alike. Recently my main focus has been on video creation and e-learning development within the vocational sector.

In 1987 Nico Juist borrowed a set of ten Apple Macintosh computers to use them in his first “computer aided” history lesson. Since then his professional focus is on ICT in Education.  He worked as teacher-trainer, developer, project manager and policy advisor for “information management”  for the universities of applied science Inholland and Leiden.

For ten years he was chairman of the SURF Special Interest Group “digital learning environment for higher education in the Netherlands” organizing knowledge exchange and collaboration in Dutch higher education. He is co-author of several publications on the subject. In 2018 he received the SURF Education Award for his long term involvement in the development of learning environments in higher education.

Nowadays he works as freelance advisor for SURF on the subject “personal and flexible digital learning environments”. Eva has been involved in education for the last 15 years, teaching students of all ages (YL, secondary school students and adults) across multiple sectors, being involved in teacher training (Erasmus, DELTA Local Tutor) and integration of educational technologies in Curriculum Design (LXD), Instructional Design and Digital project management.

Paul A. Kirschner is university distinguished professor at the Open University of the Netherlands as well as visiting professor of education with a special emphasis on learning and interaction in teacher education at the University of Oulu, Finland.

He is an internationally recognized expert in the fields of educational psychology and instructional design. He is research fellow of the American Educational Research Association (the first European to receive this honour), the International Society of the Learning Sciences, and the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Science. Barbara Kovacs is a learning professional with 18 years of experience in the adult learning space.

She fulfilled varios L&D roles at a multinational energy company from a field trainer through local trainig manager till global learning advisor positions and was responsible for the content development of offline, online and blended learning solutions used in various businesses of the company. She was covering regional and trully global portfolios and worked with various groups of internal stakeholders from all levels of the organisation from management to end users, LMS administrators and subject matter experts but also with  external teams of professional instructional designers.

From 2001 -2011, I served as an Adjunct Professor at The University of Maryland University College (UMUC) Graduate School at the Master of Distance Education and E-learning Program.

Other positions were:  head of interactive television satellite-based unit at the Open University of Israel (OUI) and a director of an e-learning center at Bar-Ilan University in Israel. Also, I was the Academic Vice President of a company that provided e-learning solutions for the corporate industry.

Martin is passionate about technology at the intersection of work and learning. As Team Leader for the Digital Labour Market at the European Commission he manages the modernisation of Europass with the ambition of making it the number one European lifelong learning tool.

Bartek Lessaer, a sociologist by training, graduated from the Jagiellonian University in Cracow, Poland in 1996, policy analyst at the European Commission's DG Education, Youth, Sport and Culture since 2016, coordinating the Education and Training Monitor, European Commission's flagship publication on education. Earlier, a socio-economic analyst at DG Employment and Social Affairs. Bartek specialising in measuring skills, social inclusion and social progress. Stefanie Lietze is Master of Science in Applied Psychology (Education, Workplace & Business) with a background in psychodiagnostics and development of learning apps as well as digital learning environments at the University of Vienna.

She is currently working on the digitalzation of the teaching and learning at the University of Applied Sciences Technikum Vienna. Special focus of her work lies in enhancing bareer-free learning (environments), creating OERs and helping lecturers to work in this manner. Her department, the Teaching and Learning Center, developed different strategies and formats to support students and staff. One format from each of these areas is presented in this contribution.

Dr. Helge Lippert is Head of Learning & Development (HQ) in the Hilti Corporation located in Liechtenstein.

He has 30 years work experience within small family businesses and globally operating organizations. Within Hilti he was part of the team that changed the learner experience towards self-learning within many internal training programs. This approach was so well perceived that the concepts are now rolled out in several other European countries. In the current role is one of his core responsibilities the delivery of digital learning solutions for the 1800 headquarter employees.

I am the Learning Technology Manager at the University of Surrey. I have a background in computing and moved into higher education in 2006, with a digital content development role at the Open University. There I developed an interest in instructional design and educational theory. At Surrey, I am responsible for the development of the digital platforms, tools and processes, required to produce engaging and effective online experiences. I recently coordinated a partnership agreement with FutureLearn and the preparation of the University's first two MOOCs, which will launch in January 2020. I am currently a PhD student with Lund University and my research relates to the role of ‘the lecture’ in contemporary higher education.

Stefan Ludwigs is teaching media theory, media psychology and digital business management at Rheinische Fachhochschule Köln (RFH), University of applied Sciences.

During the last 10 years he has been doing research in the field of e-learning, especially about motivational and cognitive effects of computer based learning in upper level school and vocational education. Professor Theo Lynn is Professor of Digital Business at DCU Business School and is Director of the Irish Institute of Digital Business at DCU Business School. Professor Lynn specializes in the role of digital technologies in transforming business processes. His main teaching areas are strategy and digital marketing. He has been published widely including the European Journal of Marketing, Information, Communications and Society, the Journal of Distributed and Parallel Computing, the International Journal of Advertising, European Planning Studies and others. He is the Series Editor on the Palgrave Studies in Digital Business & Enabling Technologies. He is a regular speaker at both academic and industry conferences. 

Previously, he was Principal Investigator of the Irish Centre for Cloud Computing and Commerce, an EI/IDA funded Cloud Computing Technology Centre (2011-2018), Associate Dean (Industry Engagement and Innovation) at DCU Business School (2015-2017), Business Innovation Platform Director for DCU (2015-2016) and Director of the Leadership, Innovation and Knowledge Research Centre at DCU (2009-2011).  He has won over 200 grants representing over €15m in total project funding. He was a PI on the Horizon 2020 CloudLightning Project (2015-2017) and is currently a PI on the Horizon 2020 RECAP Project (2017-2019).

Professor Lynn received a Bachelor in Business and Legal Studies, an MBS (Management Information Systems) and a PhD (Law), all from University College Dublin. He has been a Visiting Professor to Tec de Monterrey (Mexico), Northeastern University (China), and Tongji University (China) amongst others. He has taught modules in corporate finance law and information systems and database design at UCD and digital marketing and business analytics at NUI Maynooth. Professor Lynn is an Expert Evaluator for the European Commission. 

Professor Lynn has founded a number of companies incl. Enki Information Systems, Educational Multimedia Group and Atomic Assets, the businesses of which have been acquired by Rochford Brady Group, Intuition and Cambridge University Press respectively. Ulf Matysiak is one of six shareholders of Teach First Deutschland and has been holding the position of CEO since 2011. As part of Teach First Deutschland’s founding team he was responsible for the development of the pedagogical concept. Before joining Teach First Deutschland, Ulf worked as a teacher for German as a foreign language as well as a teacher trainer at International House Berlin.

Ulf’s passion for education and policy already shone through quite early in his life when he became the students‘ representative of his high school in the Black Forest region. He continued his work on education, youth, and community in political engagement on a municipal as well as state level before and during his studies of Law and Education Science until he returned to his childhood home of Berlin.

Dr Rachel Maxwell (@DrRachLTB) is Head of Learning and Teaching Development at the University of Northampton where she is currently leading a number of projects supporting the student experience. These include improving the first year experience through developing a holistic approach to student support and introducing learner analytics to support student engagement.

Rachel has also led on the development of a framework of graduate attributes embedding employability and Changemaker skills across our curricula. Her work also focusses on developing assessment and feedback practices suitable for the 21st century, promoting academic integrity and supporting staff to introduce innovation into their own pedagogic practice.

Born in South-West England, I spent the first 11 years of life following my father’s job – moving post every 3 years before starting boarding school. After university, I worked as a safari guide in southern Africa before returning to the UK and taking the CELTA. I joined the British Council in 2007 and have worked in a series of Teacher Development focussed roles starting with CELTA and ICELT trainer in Korea for 4 years. This was followed by roles in Malaysia and China working on CPD programmes with Ministry of Education state school English teachers. More recently, in my current role, I have been working with 5 Levant countries to develop our teacher professional development programmes - often remotely - and focussed on conflict/post-conflict contexts.

Ildiko is currently holding a position as Research and Development Associate at the Knowledge Innovation Centre (KIC) in Malta. As an expert consultant of everis, she is supporting the development of the new Europass, a project led by the European Commission's DG Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion. Her role there is to coordinate the activities of 16 countries that are piloting the European Digital Credentials Infrastructure.

She has been working in the field of open & distance education and e-learning since 1998. For 3 years she served as Deputy Secretary General at the European Distance and E-Learning Network (EDEN). She was a freelance contractor of ICWE in 2017, providing social media and communication services to promote OEB Midsummit, eLearning Africa and OEB17.

Magdalena Moś is an e-learning and adult education specialist working as a Training Project Officer in the Training Unit at Frontex (the European Border and Coast Guard Agency).

Magdalena has a professional background in both academia and the corporate sector, where she has worked on the design, development and support of online and blended learning trainings. In these projects she combines appropriate methodology and technology to create innovative learning experiences tailored for the modern times and challenges of the European Border and Coast Guard community. Brian Mulligan is a Civil Engineer who originally worked in mathematical modelling and simulation and the application of information technology in engineering. He is currently Manager of Online Learning Innovation in the Centre for Online Learning at the Institute of Technology Sligo where he has lectured since 1984. Katelijn Nijsmans fell in love with the brain and its countless possibilities whilst studying neuroscience at the University of Maastricht (NL).

While conducting fMRI research, she was astonished by our malleable brains providing all of us with the opportunity to keep learning, changing and improving. It is not dull solidified gray matter, it is an organism we can shape and develop by intentionally training it.

Today, as managing partner of the training and research company, The Tipping Point and as a higher education lecturer, she attempts on a daily basis to make scientific brain knowledge accessible and relevant for companies and individuals. Hereby she wants to help making certain that this valuable knowledge does not remain confined to the realm of scientific labs and academic journals. Dr Norazah Nordin is a Professor in ICT in Education and the Dean of the Faculty of Education, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) (Malaysia National University).

Her research areas include Massive Online Open Courses (MOOC), Mobile Learning, ICT in Lifelong Learning, and Instructional Design in Online Learning and Futuristic Learning. Tracy O’Connor is a Program Manager and Curriculum Developer for a Global Customer Service department. She worked with stakeholders to define LMS requirements, conduct an evaluation of available systems, and implement ThinkingCap as the LMS of choice. Tobias R. Ortelt graduated in Mechanical Engineering (Design Engineering and Automation Engineering) at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum in 2012.

From 2012 to March 2019 he was a research associate at the Insitute of Forming Technology and Lightweight (IUL) Compontnes at TU Dortmund University He was in charge for the developmebt of a remote lab for material testing in the project “ELLI - Excellent Teaching and Learning in Engineering Sciences”. Henrietta has over 20 years of experience of delivering digital learning solutions. First working as an Account Manager, then as an Account Director with key clients in the travel industry, financial services, NHS and the UK Public sector. For the past 12 years she has worked in a number of digital learning roles at TUI defining and driving the digital learning strategy and is currently the Learning Solutions Manager. She started at TUI with just one programme and a blank sheet of paper. TUI now has individual teams focussing on operational needs and her team works at a strategic level on complex learning requirements that need a digital solution. Jenny-Polyxeni Pange is Professor at the School of Education of the University of Ioannina, Greece, in the field of "Information Technology and Applied Mathematics with emphasis on educational programs.

She is the Director of the Laboratory of “New Technologies and Distance Learning” at the University of Ioannina.

Andrew has over a decade of experience working in professional video production. Before joining Imperial in summer 2018, he was based within the commercial video department at Media Wales (the largest independent news organisation in Wales) producing a range of content for clients from a variety of industries.

I’ve worked with global organisations developing collaborative solutions for learning that can be used in-room or to connect anytime anywhere participants.  Technology deployments, especially those that disrupt, are about changing organisational culture and managing digital transformations to deliver an ROI.

Pearson commissioned me to write 2 business books on meetings, and I’ve self-published 2 books on the use of technology for small group active collaborative learning, both with insightful chapters from experts in their academic fields.

In 2015 I innovated the Sticky Campus Roadshow, a pop-up digitally-enabled active learning classroom that universities and colleges host on campus for 4 weeks. The roadshow helps generate better-informed decisions around student-centric campus developments, identifying all the 'must-have' services that enable success.

Outside of the UK, the roadshow has also helped influence learning space developments in France, Ireland and The Netherlands.

I am a Digital Learning Fellow in the Digital Learning Lab at MITx. In my role, I work with MIT faculty to create online courses and digital learning tools for the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences, and researches and conducts experiments into the best practices in online pedagogy. I have developed several courses currently available on edX, including "Qualitative Research Methods", "Shaping Work of the Future", "Tools for Academic Engagement with Public Policy" and "Democracy and Development: Perspectives from Africa".

I am very interested in the ways that how, where and when we learn are changing, as a result of technological change. I am working as a researcher on MIT's Taskforce on the Work of the Future, working on a project which seeks to examine best practices in online and blended workforce education at scale. Nataša Perović is the Digital Education Advisor at University College London supporting the adoption of UCL’s learning and teaching strategies across the School of Life and Medical Sciences and implementation of ABC LD method across UCL. She also contributes to academic development sessions in UCL Arena Centre for Research-based Education.

She has a background in science, web development and teaching and has been working on e-learning development in medical and allied health sciences in higher education since 2006. Cristina Petracchi is heading the e-learning Center in the Capacity Development Unit in FAO, she manages and coordinates the design, development, delivery and language adaptations of e-learning courses, blended learning programmes and face-to-face training events, for the benefit of FAO member countries. Stephanie Rahbek Simonsen M.A., M.LIS, is a Learning Experience Designer in DanChurchAid's Learning Lab, where she helps subject matter experts connect their target audiences with the knowledge and skills they need. Rolf Reinhardt works for LinkedIn, a global professional online network, at the intersection of government, education and corporate learning. Jan Renz is a researcher at the Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI) in Potsdam Germany and part of the knowledge tech group at the Internet-Technologies and Systems chair.
Before entering the academic world, he spent more than 10 years working as a CTO of an internet agency. He published his first magazine in the age of 13 (4 pages, 20  copies). He worked for publisher organisations, school book publishers, founded an online travel website and a company that build a content management application for truck and bus manuals.

In 2013 he joined the HPI and is working on improving the learners experience in scalable web environments.Recent paper publications have dealt with mobile and offline learning, gamification, interactive coding exercises, social learning and learning analytics.

Sophia completed her doctorate in Philosophy at the University of Potsdam with a thesis on democracy and political theory. She also taught and hold research positions in Potsdam (Germany), Dublin (Ireland) and Philadelphia (USA). Since 2018 she works as a project manager in E-Learning at the University of Potsdam.

Most recently, he designed outcome-based in-house MOOCs at Swiss Re, a leading provider of reinsurance and other insurance-based forms of risk transfer.  He was head of e-Learning, developing new approaches to learning and hiring trainers to support delivery of global development programs.  He published the award-winning iPad APP "Sales&More" and developed experiential learning simulations in the leadership area. He has created a new approach for the 70/20/10-concept in the area of corporate finance and early on introduced TouchPoint management for HR.

Lifelong learning and meaningful employment are what Gabriel lives and breathes: over the years he has earned three Masters degrees, studying economics, corporate finance, Human Resources, change, agile and corporate learning. As well as working full-time in a Fortune 500 financial services firm, he has founded a start-up.  In his spare time he mentors unemployed people en route to finding work and is also a volunteer mentor for a refugee from a very different culture.  Gabriel lives in Switzerland.

Bernd Schenk is a senior lecturer in Information Systems and academic director of the Bachelor's degree in business administration at the University of Liechtenstein. He holds a PhD in Business Administration and Information Systems from the Vienna University of Economics and Business and a MSc in Business Administration from the University of Innsbruck. His research focuses on technology in teaching, enterprise software, and e-commerce.

Bernd has worked as a consultant and trainer for various companies in the field of ERP systems and e-commerce. He has also taught at various universities, including the International Telematic University UNINETTUNO, Rome, the University of Barcelona, Spain and Tongji University, Shanghai, China. He has served as a Global Edition reviewer and contributor to the Management Information Systems textbook (Laudon/Laudon) and is an alumnus of Stanford University's D.School Teaching and Learning Studios.

Evelien Schilder is an (e-)learning developer at the RIPE NCC, a non-profit organization aimed towards shaping the future of the internet. Her research efforts focus on media literacy education, combining her background in media (BSc and MSc in Communications) and education (PhD in Instructional Design & Technology). David Schlumpf, Ph.D. in Economics & Finance, Global Head L&D of Bank Julius Baer (Zurich)

In my current position, I assume global responsibility for the learning & leadership development department at Bank Julius Baer, that we also call the ‘JB Academy’. Julius Baer is a leading Swiss Private Banking Group, with focus on servicing and advising sophisticated private clients from around the world.

I have over 20 years experience in the financial industry and have worked for a Swiss fintech start-up, a multinational financial service company and a private bank. I joined Human Resources only in mid 2017. In previous years, I worked in business in various positions, either in investment research, financial product development, managing big front projects or relationship management.

I obtained my Master in Business administration from the University of Basel and earned my PhD in Economics & Finance from the University of St. Gallen (HSG).

Anja Schmitz is a professor for Human Resource Management at Pforzheim University and a member of the Institute for Human Resources Research at Pforzheim University. She has worked in several HR contexts with a focus on learning and development, including HR, Learning and Development, organizational development.

Currently, she teaches in HR Bachelor and Master programs where she developed different digital teaching formats, among them online social collaboration formats. Her research and publication interest lies in current HR trends with a special focus on the future of learning and development, employee experience, “new work” and the effects of the digital transformation on individuals and organizations.  

Anja is passionate about developing people’s and organization’s potential, empowering them to openly yet critically embrace the opportunities of the digital transformation. She is inspired by the powers of social collaboration – across hierarchies, disciplines and cultures.

Christel Schneider is currently working as a senior research assistant and project coordinator for the EU funded GUINEVERE Project for the University of Central Lancashire, UK. As part of her project work, Christel has been involved in teaching and learning in virtual worlds and developed her skills in machinimatography. She has over fifteen years’ experience in online teacher training and completed an MA in Virtual Education at the University of the West of England (UK). Christel also designed, set up and delivered online teacher training for Cornelsen Publishing and various other institutions. From 2006 until 2012 she was EU project manager and director of the international language association ICC. Before this, she worked as head of the language department for the German adult education association in Schleswig Holstein, Germany, and taught didactics and methodology at Hamburg University, Dept. of Education, Germany. In 2013 Christel founded CSITrain, where she still works as managing director.

Matthias Schrepfer is Lead Expert for Continuous Improvement Methodologies at Zalando SE and member of the Business Excellence team at Zalando SE. Matthias drives initiatives to ensure reliable and superior performance of Zalando's operational business processes. In his function he is leading cross-departmental projects that apply continuous improvement methodologies to optimize and sustain business process performance. Besides that, he develops and adapts methodologies tailored towards specific goal and project scenarios within Zalando.

Matthias is owner of an internal development program enabling employees in continuous improvement methodologies. He is not only organizing the program but also active mentor for projects within the program. Matthias’ responsibilities are also the development of new trainers and mentors for the development program.

Matthias is member of the leadership team for Business Excellence where he focuses on team strategy, project portfolio and planning.

Professor Rhona Sharpe is Head of Department of Technology Enhanced Learning at the University of Surrey, UK. Rhona has been researching learners’ experiences of technology for more than 15 years in both further and higher education. She is interested in the processes by which we design online learning spaces and the digital literacies and attributes that learners need in order to learn well in them.  She was founding chair of ELESIG: a special interest group for learner experience researchers (@ELESIG). Rhona’s interests in designing for learning and learner experience are well represented in two co-edited books Rethinking pedagogy for the digital age (2020) and Rethinking learning for the digital age (2010). Her latest book, 53 Interesting Ways to Support Online Learning, uses learner experience research to underpin practical ideas for teachers to use with their students.
