Gina Alexandris is the Senior Program Director for the Ryerson Law Practice Program (LPP), an innovative transition year training program for lawyers in Ontario, Canada.  Working with Ryerson's Chang School of Continuing Education, the LPP brings to life a virtual simulated law firm experience providing professional skills training.  

Gina is an experienced lawyer, adult educator and coach.  She received a Bachelor of Laws from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1991 and a Master of Education from the University of Toronto in 2012. 

Gina practised civil litigation and family law in Toronto.  She then spent 12 years with Osgoode Hall Law School York University, as Director of Career Services, then as Assistant Dean of Student Services. In 2009, Gina moved to the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Law where she developed and directed the Internationally Trained Lawyers Program. 

With her husband Nikos, much of Gina's free time is spent near a soccer field as a proud soccer mom to her teenage son.

Pete works in the School of Life Sciences, providing direction on the use of TEL within the School. With a background in information systems and web development/programming (BSc (Hons) Information Systems; MSc Web Computing), he is currently studying for a PhD in eResearch and Technology Enhanced Learning at Lancaster University. His thesis is focusing on the role of electronic assessment in Higher Education and the implications for policy and practice.

Pete’s previous role was as a Senior Lecturer in Computing at Edge Hill University, contributing to the teaching and project supervision on the Web Systems Development & Teacher Training pathways. He has also worked as a Research Assistant in the Institute of Cognitive Science at University of Colorado (Boulder), USA, working on the development of a Web interface for a system intended for use by social scientists studying climate change.

Yannis Angelis is working the last 20 years in the organizational environment in different roles, mainly Training & Learning Management, Marketing Communication and Organizational Development. Alejandro (Ale) Armellini is Professor of Learning and Teaching in Higher Education and Director of the Institute of Learning and Teaching in HE, University of Northampton.

Ale’s key role is to lead change in the area of learning and teaching across all schools and services at Northampton. Three aspects of Ale’s work are (1) the development, implementation and evaluation of Northampton’s Learning and Teaching Strategic Plan, (2) the development of a robust framework for continuous professional development for academic staff, and (3) fostering evidence-based, innovative practices in both campus-based and online learning and teaching. Ale’s research focuses on learning innovation, online pedagogy, course design in online environments, institutional capacity building and open practices.

Ale has extensive international teaching and programme development experience across different education sectors and modes of study. Igor Balaban is Assistant Professor at the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Organization and Informatics. He published over 30 scientific and professional papers and 4 book chapters. His special interest are e-learning course evaluations, learner centered approaches (ePortfolios and Open Badges) and individual learning paths using e-assessment and learning analytics. Has experience in several international and national projects (such as FP6, Tempus, IPA, COST, LLP). Anja Balanskat is a senior analyst in the area of policy making, educational innovation and research for ICT in eduation. For more than 10 years, she has managed e-learning education studies and projects and coordinates European Schoolnet's working group on Digital Competence. She was responsible for the coordination and drafting of a European wide study on 1:1 learning in 2012 on behalf of the IPTS and currently manages the Creative Classrooms Lab Project, a first EU project on policy experimentations of tablets in schools. She has extensive experience in qualitative research, implementing pilots in schools and was part of the team of the large scale quantitative study: Survey of Schools: ICT in education. In her work she also acted as an adviser to the European Commission’s ICT cluster and provided input to workshops organised by the OECD on their New Millennium Learner project, EUN’ Steering committee and international conferences. She publishes on a regular basis literature reviews, thematic reports, trend papers and policy briefs.

Previously, Anja advised the European Strategic Management of Universities (ESMU) in European Benchmarking in Higher Education.

Dr Bob Barrett is a professor in the School of Business at the American Public University.  He has an Ed.D. in the field of Human Resource Development from The George Washington University in Washington, DC. Shirley Bennett is Head of Academic Practive at the University of Northampton, leading the institutional CPD Scheme, which is accredited by the Higher Education Academy (HEA) for the award of HEA Fellowships. Miles is principal lecturer in Computing Education at the University of Roehampton. Prior to joining Roehampton, he spent 18 years in four schools, much of the time as an ICT coordinator and most recently as a head teacher. His research interests include the pedagogies of computer science education and informal learning. He is a former chair of Naace, the UK ICT subject association, and continues to serve on its board of management and is a member the management board of Computing At School and the UK Forum for Computing Education. He is a fellow of the BCS, RSA and HEA.

Joachim Bessell, Master of Arts in Soziology and German Literature, Albert-Ludwigs-University, Freigurg i. Br.

He made his first experiences with distance learning as tele-tutor and supervisor in the distance learning course "Expert for new learning technologies". This was in 1998 and some of the participants had to buy a PC in order to participate in this distance learning course. Over the years, the subject distance learning would not let him go. After a stint as eLearning consultant in a Swiss company and some years of classroom teaching, he worked the last seven years as freelancer by writing learning Textbooks for distance learning courses and guiding adult learners in their learning.

Today, he is a research assistant in the project "PM Kompare" (www.pm-kompare.de). There he developes and organizes a distance learning course on the subject of process management, which prepares the participants for the exam at the Chamber of Commerce (IHK). This distance learning offer is based on work process integrated and action-oriented learning. Here among other things come Tablets and an ePortfolio platform (Mahara) in use.

Dr Maggy Beukes-Amiss is a Namibian with over 17 years experience in teaching ICT related subjects at the University of Namibia, within the Department of Information and Communication Studies. She has a PhD in Computer-integrated Education (CiE) through the University of Pretoria, South Africa. She served as Head of Department (2005-2007), and again for another three years (2012-2014). Currently she is the Director of the newly established Centre for eLearning and Interactive Multimedia at the University of Namibia.

She is particularly passionate about eLearning capacity-building activities through the use of open source software packages and research focusing on eLearning technologies and activities. She is a member of the eLearning Committee of the University of Namibia and used to serve on the Namibian Open Learning Network Trust (NOLNet) eLearning Committee as Coordinator of eLearning activities within the entire country for over seven years, until 2011. She has been involved in a number of eLearning capacity-building activities in Namibia and various countries in Africa on behalf of NOLNet, GIZ and GESCI.

She served as Chairperson of the eLearning Africa 2013 Local Organising Committee and was also a reviewer of conference papers for eLearning Africa, on behalf of ICWE GmbH, Germany, 2011-2015. She is a certified ICDL trainer (2007) and an Expert of New Learning Technologies (2005) through TeleAkademia of Furtwagen, Germany.

She has served as an ICT Steering Committee member of the ICT Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education in Namibia since 2005 and, in addition, has been the Deputy Chairperson of the ICT Steering Committee since 2012. She was a contributor of the national ICT Policy and implementation plan, Tech NA!. She was a Commissioner and then Chairperson of the Board, of the regulator Namibian Communications Commission (NCC), 2006-2011. She was also appointed as the country’s eminent e-Content expert through the World Summit Award (WSA), 2006 -2015. She served as a Technical Quality Assurance Committee (TeQAC) member for the African leaders in ICT (ALICT) blended learning programme of GESCI, as well as the tutor-coordinator (training and coaching) e-tutors of the ALICT programme, 2011-2014. Another highlight in her career path is that she has recently been appointed as the Chairperson of the Telecom Namibia Board.

In this role, Sandra has worked on the improvement and growth of the E-Learning practices at the RIPE NCC. Some of the projects she has implemented are the RIPE NCC Webinars and the RIPE NCC Academy. Sandra also delivers face-to-face training courses on topics such as IPv6 and Routing Registry throughout Europe, the Middle East and Central Asia.

Maurice Brown was born and raised in Kingston, Jamaica where he completed most of his formal education.  He moved to the Netherlands in 1994 and completed his first degree, subsequently completing a Master’s Degree.

Interested in both sciences and business at an early age. Whilst at High School his career ambitions were focussed on dentistry.  However, his love of aviation continued and he took a more business oriented approach to his education, and later became a consultant to the aviation industry. Further roles in the field of Finance followed at a number of leading multinational companies.

Maurice attended London International Youth Science Forum as a participant in 1986 and continues to try to keep abreast of trends in scientific and technological advancements and achievements.

Currently he is a Senior lecturer in Finance and Business Strategy at the HU/University of Applied Sciences Utrecht, in the Netherlands. Together with a small group of colleagues, are looking at ways to modernize their current curriculum and how to  bridge the gap between student education and needs of their future industry employers.

Professor Mark Brown is Director of the National Institute for Digital Learning (NIDL) at Dublin City University (DCU). Over the last decade Mark has played key leadership roles in the implementation of several major university-wide digital learning and teaching initiatives. Professor Brown has published extensively in his areas of expertise and serves on several international journal editorial boards in the fields of Online, Blended and Digital Learning. Mark is centrally involved in several European funded online learning initiatives, including two major projects exploring the role of MOOCs. Gunnar Brückner is an expert in human resources management, organisational learning and staff development. His career as a learning leader, coach, consultant and strategist has been characterised by a focus on improving employee performance, especially in a multicultural context and through blended and informal learning.

At the United Nations Development Programme, where he served in various roles, including as Chief Learning Officer until October 2002, Brückner conceived and implemented innovative strategies for staff learning and development on a global scale. Ilona Buchem (PhD) is Professor for Media and Communication at Beuth University of Applied Sciences in Berlin. She graduated with a Master’s degree in Applied Linguistics at the University of Warsaw (Poland), Concordia University (WI, USA) and University Duisburg-Essen (Germany). She studied Educational Sciences at Humboldt University in Berlin and obtained her PhD degree in Business Education in 2009. Elena Coello works for the European Commission. She is the assistant to the Director of the Executive Agency Education, Audiovisual and Culture (EACEA). Lia joined the Wellcome Trust in 2014 to lead the innovative £6 million ‘Education and Neuroscience Initiative’ following a long-standing interest in this area.

After studying neuroscience at the University of Nottingham, Lia became a secondary school biology teacher and head of department for six years. During her time teaching she noticed that the lack of connection between the education community and the neuroscience/psychology research had left a gulf which was being filled by ‘brain-based’ teaching practices which were often unsubstantiated. This led her to complete an M.Ed at the University of Cambridge looking at how neuroscience could be used to develop the understanding of learning to improve practice.

The ‘Education and Neuroscience Initiative’ a collaborative scheme with the Education Endowment Foundation, aims to both build the evidence by funding research, but also to help support teachers with the research already available.

Mathew Constantine works as Director of Projects in IE Publishing at IE Business School. He works closely with professors to research and design innovative interactive case studies and tutorials which form a fundamental part of the MBA and postgraduate programmes of the school. He coordinates an internal production team of project managers, programmers and designers for each project and continuously monitors the development process. He is driven by the continual pursuit of adding real value to e-learning documentation and strives to provide students with original and entertaining resources.

It was only until Mathew had experienced a number of different positions that he realized his professional future would be dedicated to the area of education, and he believes that it is through these very distinct experiences that he draws innovation and originality in his work. He graduated in 2000 from the University of Leicester in BA Business Economics and since this date has worked as a service manager and teacher in a language school, an internal auditor for a leading Spanish constructor (Ferrovial S.A.), and as a web homepage coordinator for the second most visited site in Spain (Repsol YPF).

After working in several management positions at the Applied University of Utrecht Pieter Cornelissen is now Director Education Innovation (since 2011). As such he is responsible for the entire educational redesign of the Applied University of Utrecht: 2000 teachers and 30.000 students.

In his presentation he details the design of our university-wide project. He gives fair warning of some of the pitfalls he stepped into and he gladly share the successes the Applied University of Utrecht  achieved in one year, in which six faculties executed more than 30 innovation projects, involving 400 teachers and other staffmembers, ultimately affecting thousands of students.

Kate leads a team of Academic Practice Tutors at the University of Northampton. This team supports the academic development of all students at the university: undergraduate, postgraduate and beyond. In recent years the teams focus has shifted from purely face to face teaching towards blended delivery. In 2013, the University of Northampton’s first MOOC “Study Skills for Academic Success” was created and delivered by the Centre for Achievement and Performance. Following on from this, Kate has presented widely on the experiences of creating, designing and delivering MOOCs. In 2015, a Postgraduate Study Skills MOOC is being launched.

Kate’s research interests extend to the impact of blended/online learning upon the student experience. She is currently involved in a research project with the University of Newcastle (NSW), the Open University Australia and the Open University to investigate “accessMOOCs”.

Kate is also a Chartered Librarian and a Fellow of the HEA.

A passion for storytelling and a background in social media and digital marketing led Gemma Critchley to BP's Learning Innovation Through Technology team. Gemma heads up The Hub, BP's informal learning platform for sharing stories through video. 

The Hub is packed with over 2,000 videos of BP colleagues sharing peer-to-peer advice. These sit alongside externally curated content from sites like Ted.com and YouTube. All videos provide performance support at the point of need, championing on-the-job learning. Content on the site is pulled by learners, not pushed by the business, and users are not tracked through a learning management system. Instead, Gemma uses Google Analytics and takes cues from modern marketing to understand her audience. User experience is a big focus for the team and lots of time is spent understanding the context of the audience and the tasks they have to complete. This helps The Hub team to deliver content to learners in a relevant, timely and useful manner. 

Stories on The Hub cover everything from senior leaders sharing stories of challenges they've overcome to technical specialists talking about how they dealt with a particularly tricky issue in a safe way. Authentic stories about useful lessons learnt and real people sharing these stories are what make The Hub compelling. 

The results speak for themselves: The Hub has had over 500,000 page views since launch in 2012 and now averages around 5,000 visits per month. Because The Hub is accessible from any device - mobile, tablet or laptop - and via any connection, even 3G, it is used globally across BP's locations.

The Hub's success lies in its balance between design and utility, coupled with a strong community built on sharing and storytelling.

Cornelia Daheim is the founder and director of Future Impacts Consulting, a foresight research and consulting company. Ms Daheim has experience in foresight projects in Europe, the US and Asia, and has spoken on foresight and future trends around the world. In 2003, she founded the German Node of the Millennium Project, which is the world’s largest continuous foresight NGO working towards future global change, and has since served as its head.

Dr. Wim de Boer is the manager for educational projects within the Afûk Institute for the Frisian Language. Currently he works on the de development of a new and innovative package of flexible and (partly) digital learning materials for Frisian language learning within primary and secondairy education.

He graduated in Educational Sciences and Technology’s from the University of Twente in 1998. He completed his Ph.D. at that same university in 2004 on the use of ICT for flexible learning.

In recent years he worked within the Netherlands, Africa (Mozambique) and South America (Ecuador) on projects within primary, secondary and higher education, always focused on educational change and innovation. Bert’s professional life is all about competent people. He thinks, publishes, consults, designs and sets up learning and development projects for corporations. His areas of expertise include technology enhanced learning and leadership development.

Bert has been active in the field of corporate learning and e-learning for the last 13 years, first as instructor and course designer, later as project manager, consultant and business development manager. He worked at IBM Learning Development Europe where he was responsible for commercial e-learning development projects across Europe, and the management of the learning innovation initiatives. Three years ago he joined the Center for Creative Leadership as a solution architect, designing custom leadership development experiences.

Hans was born in 1966 in a small village near Amsterdam (The Netherlands). In 1995 he started his own software firm Talking Telecom Technologies. In 1998 the company made a complete product for computer-based examination. From there it was a small step into e-learning. In 2007 Hans and his colleague Anton started a new company called Icademy which would launch over 300 online courses.

From his years of experience in the e-learning industry Hans noticed a persistent lack of interactivity in e-learning. The result: passive and unmotivated students. He wanted to make adding interactivity as easy as possible: something that every instructor could add to their e-learning. Together with his colleague Anton he started a new initiative that should do just that: HiHaHo.com. Hans has become a true evangelist for interactive online video learning.

From September 2015 Hans has started a new career as 'Brain Tweaker'. His topics of expertise in this field are Decision Making, Problem Solving and Creative Thinking.

Maurice de Hond is a Dutch businessman, entrepreneur and founder member of the organisation “Education for a new era (04NT)”, which is responsible for the first “Steve JobsSchools”.

He is known in the Netherlands as a prominent election opinion poller and internet guru, regularly invited to speak at events and provide advice to organisations and the Government on future development. His 1995 book ‘Dankzij de snelheid van het licht’ (Thanks to the speed of light) successfully forecast many internet developments. 

In 1998, he founded Newconomy – where he also served as CEO – an investment company that has worked with over 20 Dutch internet companies. It successfully public in early 2000. Since 2002, de Hond has been active with his current affairs platform Peil.nl (www.peil.nl), which is regularly quoted in the Dutch Media. Peil.nl is a virtual company without a physical office.

In 2009, he became inspired by his daughter’s (Daphne) use of educational apps on the iPhone/iPad which, in 2012, led to the launch of the foundation O4NT (Onderwijs 4 een Nieuwe Tijd/ Education for a new era), and the development of a completely new school concept called the Steve JobsSchool. In 2013, the first elementary schools began to work with this approach, and currently there are more than 20 schools in the Netherlands operating using the Steve JobsSchool model with remarkable results (www.stevejobsschool.nl).  In the coming 12 months, several more schools worldwide will adopt the concept.

Riekje de Jong is a senior educational consultant and staff trainer at the Centre for Teaching and Learning (faculty of Social Sciences) of Utrecht University since 2012. She is a member of the Educational Development and Training group. Next to her management responsibilities of the Educational Development & Training group, she has been consultant and project leader of several local and national projects in the field of staff development in higher education.  

She has studied Social Psychology at VU University Amsterdam and started her career as a teacher in higher vocational education and as a consultant in the field of secondary education. In 1989 she became (senior) educational consultant at Radboud University in Nijmegen. She was active in the field op curriculum education and staff development in higher education.  She is one of the initiators of the mutual agreement of the university teaching qualification (BKO) of all Dutch research universities in 2008.

As a consultant she is involved in the implementation of staff development policy in research universities. For example as programme leader of the programme of Educational leadership of the Centre of Excellence of University Teaching (Utrecht University), in providing programmes for professional development of academic teachers and portfolio tracks for a senior teaching qualification (SKO). She is also providing professional development of teachers in universities of applied sciences regarding student assessment and supervising student research. 

She has broad experience in audits and assessment committees of the quality of higher education programmes in Flanders and the Netherlands (NVAO). She is participating in national and international networks in the field of educational development (EHON and ICED).

Her main fields of interests are professional development of teachers in higher education/staff development, assessment and curriculum development.

My professional journey (Institute of Tropical Medicine - Belgium, Athabasca University - Canada, The Open University – UK, and Women's gender equality movement - Belgium) immersed me in online and mobile learning from 1999 onward. I have set-up, coordinated and developed several online and mobile learning projects, always with a focus on participation and durability. These projects involved partners and individuals from both the Northern (Canada, United States, Italy, Belgium, Ireland, Germany, UK) and Southern regions (South-Africa, India, Peru, Morocco). As an avid enthusiast of open science, I am an active international speaker giving keynotes and guest lectures, as well as providing knowledge input (and consequently receiving lots of input) at seminars, SIGs and workshops.   

Enlightened by the first connectivist MOOCs, I have set up one of the first MOOCs on mobile learning, called MobiMOOC (2011 & 2012), enabling learners to realize their own project. In 2013 I decided to investigate FutureLearn MOOCs and specifically how individual learners with online learning experience self-direct their learning, which resulted in obtaining a PhD at the Open University in UK.

I have come to realize that there is no single solution for all. The diversity which is at the core of nature’s success, seems to be replicated by the diversity in learning preferences and ways to achieve learning success in humans. But above all, I am a social learner, so feel free to talk to me.

After my secondary education, I obtained my Master degree as translator English and Italian at the Lessius Hogeschool in Antwerp in 1994. I worked for a travel agency between 1994 and 2000.

In 2000, I obtained my certificate as a teacher in higher secondary education.

Since 2000, I have worked as a teacher at the Guldensporencollege in Kortrijk, Belgium. I mainly teach Dutch and English, but I have often been involved in innovative projects such as 'De proeftuinen', where we explored new ways of teaching and assessment. 

This year, our school has entered the CLIL-project (Content and Language Integrated Learning). In this project, we teach non-language subjects such as religion, history and human sciences in French or English (instead of Dutch).

For our fifth form pupils, we combine the CLIL-project with MOOC classes, in which we want to enhance the digital learning skills of our pupils.

Vladan Devedzic is a Professor of Software Engineering at the University of Belgrade, Serbia. He also used to teach several computer science courses at the School of Electrical Engineering, University of Belgrade, as well as at other higher-education establishments in Serbia.

His long-term professional objective is to bring close together ideas from the broad fields of intelligent systems and software engineering. His current professional and research interests include technology-enhanced learning (TEL), programming education, software engineering, and intelligent software systems.

Vladan Devedzic has participated in and/or coordinated a number of national projects, as well as a dozen of international projects. His most recent European project is GRASS (Grading Soft Skills). It focuses on representing soft skills of learners in a quantitative, measurable way, so that these skills can become the subject of formal validation and recognition.

Pierre Dillenbourg is professor of learning technologies at Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) and academic director of the Center for Digital Education. Former teacher in elementary school, Pierre graduated in educational science (University of Mons, Belgium). He started to conduct research in learning technologies in 1984. He obtained a PhD in computer science from the University of Lancaster (UK), in the field of educational applications of artificial intelligence.  He is past president of the International Society for the Learning Sciences.  His work covers various domain of computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL), ranging from novel interfaces for face-to-face collaboration (tangibles, paper computing) to more cognitive projects on dual eye tracking. His lab conducts projects in elementary schools, vocational education and university teaching. The Center for Digital Education is both the EPFL MOOC factory, having obtained 265’000 registration for its first year of activity, and a team of scientists doing research on MOOCs.

Stephen Downes works for the National Research Council of Canada where he has served as a Senior Researcher, based in Moncton, New Brunswick, since 2001. Affiliated with the Learning and Collaborative Technologies Group, Institute for Information Technology, Downes specializes in the fields of online learning, new media, pedagogy and philosophy.

Downes is perhaps best known for his daily newsletter, OLDaily, which is distributed by web, email and RSS to thousands of subscribers around the world, and as the originator of the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC). He is a popular speaker, appearing at hundreds of events around the world over the last fifteen years. He has published hundreds of articles both online and in print through two decades of research and development into learning networks and related technologies.

Prior to joining the NRC, Downes worked for the University of Alberta as an information architect, and prior to that, as a distance education and new media design specialist for Assiniboine Community College in Brandon, Manitoba. This followed a decade of teaching experience both in person and by distance with Athabasca University, the University of Alberta, and Grande Prairie regional college. 

At the University of Alberta he built a learning and research portal for the municipal sector in that province, Munimall, and another for the Engineering and Geology sector, PEGGAsus. He also pioneered the development of learning objects and was one of the first adopters and developers of RSS content syndication in education. Downes introduced the concept of e-learning 2.0 and with George Siemens developed and defined the concept of Connectivism, using the social network approach to deliver open online courses to three thousand participants over two years. 

Downes obtained a BA and MA in philosophy from the University of Calgary, specializing in epistemology and the philosophy of science. He also studied at the PhD level at the University of Alberta, completing all but his dissertation. Among numerous volunteer and committee positions while a student, Downes served as editor of the Calgary student newspaper, the Gauntlet, for two terms, and as president of the Graduate Students' Association at the University of Alberta, also for two terms. He served as a member of the Board of Governors, University of Alberta, and with the Athabasca University Governing Council.

After completing high school at Ottawa's School of Continuing Education while working as a concession stand worker and dishwasher, Downes studied computing science for one year at Algonquin College while working as a telephone equipment installer and (later) as a security guard. He worked for a year as a computer operator for Texas Instruments in Calgary, then as a pot washer, 7-Eleven clerk, and development education programmer for the Arusha International Development Centre. Downes has also been a newspaper carrier, waiter at a race track, hot dog vendor, building cleaner and camp counsellor. He was a candidate for mayor in the city of Brandon in 1995.

Downes was born in Montreal, Quebec, in 1959 and has four brothers (all younger). He lives in Moncton, New Brunswick, with his wife Andrea (b. Colorado Springs, Colorado; married 1998) and four cats (Bart, Polly, Lexi and Alex).

Stephen reads a lot of science fiction and books in general. He enjoys movies, television and sports, especially hockey. Patti Dyjur is a curriculum development consultant with the University of Calgary, Canada. Prof. Dr Ulf-Daniel Ehlers is the Vice-President for Quality and Academic Affairs at the DHBW - Baden Wurttemberg-State University in Stuttgart, Germany. On the African level, he participated in the development of e-learning strategy for both Nile Basin and COMESA Countries as an Egyptian expert who participated in implementing the first e-learning master degree in the Middle East in collaboration with "Middlesex" University in UK and in establishing the Egyptian node for the Global Distance Learning Network of the World Bank (GDLN).

On the regional level, and as a member of the Arab Workforce Group preparing the WSIS 1^st. phase he participated in formulating the document "Towards a Pan Arab Information Society - A Joint Action Plan". In addition, he participated in the drafting committee of the "High Level Arab Conference" to prepare for the first phase of the WSIS which was held in Cairo in June 2003. Also, he participated in reviewing a regional document called:  "Towards Activating the Geneva Plan of Action: A Regional Vision to Promote and Develop the Information Society in the Arab Region" which was submitted in the second phase of the WSIS held in Tunis.

In 2014, he led a national workgroup of  multi-stakeholders experts (governmental, private, and NGOs) -under the umbrella of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology- to prepare the national strategic plan of ICT in Egypt. Also, he is a member of a national workgroup of multi-stakeholders experts to develop the eLearning in Egypt.

He also led a national workgroup -under the umbrella of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology- to issue "Egypt ICT Golden Book" which shows the projects undertaken by different Egyptian stakeholders in the field of "Information for Development - ICT4D" as one of Egypt's efforts in the implementation and follow-up of the WSIS two phases, Geneva and Tunis.

He also contributed in implementing the "National Contest of the e-Content" under the umbrella of "Information Technology Industry Development Agency - ITIDA" through his membership of the competition executive committee. In addition, he participated as jury in the second round of the competition in 2007 in the field of "e-learning."

Mr. El-Sobky is an author for a number of papers submitted in international, regional, and local conferences in the areas of e-Learning, e-Content e-Government and the Knowledge Society. In addition, he authored a book in Arabic language called: "A Guide for Information Technology and Systems Security".

He is a member of the "Board of Information Technology and Communication – Internet Security Workgroup", Academy of Scientific Research and Technology, Egypt.

Dr Harold Elletson is an international communications and public affairs consultant. He is also the Director of The New Security Foundation, which conducts research into the implications of the new security environment for civil society. The New Security Foundation provides an international forum for dialogue between the public and private sectors and offers analytical insight and information about new security conditions. The Foundation hosts the Security and Defence Learning track at OEB, as well as organising other conferences and seminars. A particular area of expertise is tourism security and the connection between culture and security.

He is a founding director of the Africa Forum on Business, Investment and Security, a member of the steering committee of OEB, a member of the Organising Committee of eLearning Africa and a consultant to ICWE GmbH. He is also the editor of The eLearning Africa Report, which is published every year and contains a survey of ICT in education in Africa, a comprehensive country report outlining progress in ICT4E in every African country and a funding guide.

Dr Elletson was previously Director of the NATO Forum on Business and Security, which he created with support from the NATO Science Programme.

A former Member of the United Kingdom Parliament (from 1992-1997), he served as Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland in the early stages of the peace process and was also a member of the Select Committee on Environmental affairs. He served as a member of the Lancashire Education Authority (the Education Committee of Lancashire County Council) before being elected to Parliament where he represented the interests of schools and colleges in his constituency in discussions with Ministers and on the floor of the House of Commons. He is a Fellow of the Armed Forces Parliamentary Scheme and of the Industry and Parliament Trust.

As a communications and public affairs specialist, he has advised many leading companies on aspects of their business in challenging markets, including BP in Azerbaijan and Alstom in Siberia. He has written widely on political and historical subjects and his first book, The General Against the Kremlin, was published by Little Brown. His journalism has been published in a variety of newspapers and magazines. Dr Elletson holds a PhD in Social Sciences from the University of Bradford.

Robert Farmer is a learning designer at the University of Northampton. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a Certified Member of the Association for Learning Technology. In 2014, the learning technology team in which he works was awarded the Learning Technology Team of the Year Award by the Association for Learning Technology (ALT). Prior to becoming a learning designer he worked as a learning technologist, and before this he taught for ten years, teaching at levels three, four and five, and leading courses in philosophy, critical thinking and digital film-making. He has had work published in journals and books, has presented at various national and international conferences, and has had work screened on Channel 4 and at film festivals and conferences.

Robert is interested in many aspects of learning and teaching and the ways that technology and good pedagogic design can enhance learning. His current areas of interest, activity and research include designing and creating MOOCs, designing and developing blended learning courses, mobile friendly design, active learning, the flipped classroom, patchwork text assessment, e-portfolios, collaborative learning and communities of learning, critical/engaged pedagogy, Socratic method and the importance of dialogue and discussion in education. Sarah is an accomplished British stage and screen actress, director, writer and workshop leader. In the theatre she has performed on London’s West End, with the Royal Shakespeare Company, with Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre and toured with productions across North America and Europe. She regularly appears in TV productions on the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and international channels and has many film credits.

Sarah directs for the theatre in the UK and Italy. She is a founder member of The Lions Part touring company with whom she devised, directed and starred in the highly successful productions ‘Lilies on the Land’ and ‘Yours Ever Jane’.

In the field of education and training, Sarah runs workshops and theatre courses all over the world. She has taught at Florida State University, the Universities of Ohio/ Miami and Drew. She runs the Shakespeare Course at Cuba’s National Drama School and leads workshops with young people in Jamaica as part of the ‘Strong without Violence’ project. Her workshops also take her regularly to Italy, Morocco and Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London.

Sarah is passionate about using workshops to build confidence, clear communication and the skills of performance. 

Dr Jenny Fisher is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Social Care and Social Work, Manchester Metropolitan University, with extensive professional experience of working in communites and with regional and natonal government. She teaches on the BA (Hons) Social Care and the MA Health and Social Care programmes. She is an experienced ethnographic researcher who has undertaken research that explores personalization, voluntary organisations and the role of community spaces. Jenny is an innovative academic who brings in creative approaches to her teaching. She has led the introduction of animation as a form of assessment within MMU, and supported colleagues with using animation in research and for learning and teaching. She has had abstracts accepted to discuss the use of animation at two learning and teaching conferences in 2015. She is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Brynjar Foss is a professor of human physiology at the University of Stavanger (UiS), Norway.

After his PhD (2001) Foss worked as a secondary education teacher and studied pedagogy and didactics. After five years, Foss ended up at the UiS where he has contributed extensively in the development and implementation of various digital learning tools. This includes the E-compendiums and podcasts, game based learning tools and various on-demand lectures. Furthermore, Foss participated in the testing and implementation of digital exams at UiS and published UiS’ first MOOC in March 2014.

Foss have also been among the initiators of e-learning research at UiS.

Gernold Frank is Professor emeritus for Human Resources and Organizational Behaviour at the Business School for Economics and Law, University of Applied Sciences Berlin (HTW Berlin; since 1995). He was Program Director Bachelor/Undergraduate `International Business´ and head of eLCC –the universities eLearning competence center. He was co-founder and head of Master/Graduate `Labour- and Human Resource-Management´ (launch: Oct 2010). Until 1994 and between 1999-2002 he worked for the Dresdner Bank AG, D-Frankfurt on Main, CorporateCenter Personnel. Among other activities he was responsible for creating and implementation of a new company-wide appraisal system and he created a personnel development system for young professionals with high potential. Dr. Eran Gal is an e-learning expert with over 17 years of experience in applying cross-company technology-based learning solutions. Dr. Gal holds both M.A. and PhD degrees from the Knowledge Technology Lab at the Tel Aviv University, School of Education. Following several years as an e-Learning manager in large enterprises Dr. Gal joined the Holon Institution of Technology (HIT), Faculty of Instructional Technologies as a lecturer and a research team leader. 

Erick Tambo is originally from Cameroon. He graduated at the Technical University of Dortmund in computer science with a focus on electrical engineering and holds a PhD in computer science from the FernUniversität in Hagen (Distance Learning University).

He is associate academic officer at the United Nation University in Bonn at the institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS). He is in charge of the conceptualization, organization and management of e-learning activities at UNU-EHS. Erick leads and coordinates UNU-EHS contributions to support the development of the Pan African University of the African Union in Algeria.

Prior to joining UNU-EHS, Erick Tambo led the working group on Information and Communication Technologies for development (ICT4D) at the chair of cooperative systems at the FernUniveesität in Hagen. The working group designed and developed socio-technical systems to support the development processes of southern countries with a special focus on sub Saharan African countries.

He has a broad expertise in educational technologies and computer supported teaching/learning systems for developing countries, socio-technical systems to support the North-South knowledge transfer, collaborative working processes between Africa and its Diaspora, endogenous/appropriated technologies and local innovation.

Denise Gaspard-Richards, PhD is head of the Course Development Department in the Academic Programming and Delivery Division,  at The University of the West Indies, Open Campus in Trinidad and Tobago. Anne Gilleran has many years’ experience in education in various different roles including being a school principal and teacher trainer. Ian Goldin is Professor of Globalisation and Development and Director of the Oxford Martin School at the University of Oxford.

Ian Goldin was Vice President of the World Bank (2003-2006) and prior to that the Bank's Director of Development Policy (2001-2003). From 1996 to 2001 he was Chief Executive and Managing Director of the Development Bank of Southern Africa and served as an advisor to President Nelson Mandela. Previously, Goldin was Principal Economist at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) in London, and Program Director at the OECD Development Centre in Paris, where he directed the Programs on Trade, Environment and Sustainable Development.

He has a BA (Hons) and a BSc from the University of Cape Town, an MSc from the London School of Economics, and an MA and Doctorate from the University of Oxford.

Goldin has received wide recognition for his contributions to development and research, including having been knighted by the French Government and nominated Global Leader of Tomorrow by the World Economic Forum. He has published over 50 articles and 19 books, his two most recent books are The Butterfly Defect: How globalization creates systemic risks, and what to do about it (Princeton University Press, 2014) and an edited volume Is the planet full?  (Oxford University Press, 2014).

Nik Gowing was a main news presenter for the BBC’s international 24-hour news channel BBC World News 1996-2014. He presented The Hub with Nik Gowing, BBC World Debates, Dateline London, plus location coverage of major global stories.

For 18 years he worked at ITN where he was bureau chief in Rome and Warsaw, and Diplomatic Editor for Channel Four News (1988-1996). He has been a member of the councils of Chatham House (1998–2004), the Royal United Services Institute (2005–present), and the Overseas Development Institute (2007-2014), the board of the Westminster Foundation for Democracy including vice chair (1996-2005), and the advisory council at Wilton Park (1998-2012 ). In 1994 he was a fellow at the Joan Shorenstein Barone Center in the J. F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University.

Nik has extensive reporting experience over three decades in diplomacy, defence and international security. Maruja Gutiérrez-Diaz has degrees in architecture and in urban planning from the School of Architecture, University of Madrid. A postgraduate research grant at the University of Edinburgh got her into computers and changed her professional life forever. After some years working as a consultant, she was appointed Head of the Centre for Information and Documentation of the Madrid Metropolitan Area, in charge of regional information systems.

She joined the European Commission in 1988, as specialist in new technologies. The highlights of her European career have been the upgrade and networking of Commission´s libraries, the launching of the Europa server,  the eLearning initiative, which evolved into a fully-fledged program for innovation and education, and the European Year of Creativity and Innovation.

Recently retired from the Commission, she is setting back at Madrid as an independent consultant in the fields of innovation and education.

Carl Henrik Gørbitz received his PhD-degree from the University of Oslo in 1990. After a post.doc. appointment with Professor Margaret C. Etter at the University of Minnesota, he returned to the Department of Chemistry in Oslo where he obtained a staff position in structural chemistry in 1992 and was promoted to Full Professor in 1996. He has published about 150 scientific papers in three categories: 1) protein structures, 2) amino acids, peptides and their complexes, and 3) crystal engineering efforts using other types of molecules. In addition to single crystal X-ray diffraction, experimental methods have involved powder XRD and NMR-investigations, supplemented by a spectrum of theoretical methods. As the head of studies at his department from 2001 to 2013, and also as a lecturer at the bachelor, master and PhD-levels, Professor Gørbitz has developed a keen interest in learning theory and the integration of digital tools in teaching and assessment.

Poul Kyvsgaard Hansen is an Associate Professor of Technology Management and Organization at Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering at Aalborg University in Denmark. He holds a M.Sc. in Industrial Engineering and a Ph.D. in Technology Management. His current research focuses on various aspects of communicating complex problems and solutions. This includes both organizational and technical issues within three overall research areas 1) Product modularization – Architectures – Platforms, 2) Innovation Management, and 3) Change Management. Dr Stylianos Hatzipanagos is Senior Lecturer (King's Learning Institute) at King's College London, UK. He is a Fellow of the Centre for Distance Education at the University of London. Martin Hawksey is Chief Innovation, Community and Technology Officer for the Association for Learning Technology. Martin's career began as a learning technologist in the UK Higher Education sector and has gone on to hold advisory roles within the educational technology sector for a number of UK government funded services. In these roles, he has supported staff in the exploration and adoption of innovative approaches to learning and teaching.

As part of his role Martin is responsible community strategy implementing a number of initiatives including the development of the ALT Members #altc Twitter hashtag. Since 2014 this has been promoted as the primary tag for sharing ALT activities as well as becoming the official ALT Annual Conference hashtag. To provide actionable insight to the development of the hashtag Martin has developed a number of free tools for measuring social media impact on Twitter utilizing Google Sheets as a platform for data capture and analysis. Jules Hayward leads the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s Education and Training Programmes. Garry Hearn is a Colonel in the British Army he was recently responsible for the programme management of the UKs largest Defence Technical Traning Transformation Programme, focussed on transforming training and through life learning for up to 40000 students per annum. He is now engaged in delivering leadership and professional learning to the Army's emerging leaders. He is a CIS Engineer with over 35 years experience in a variety of military roles including, leading organisations,Strategic Human Resource, Organisation Development, as well as training and education.  In a previous role he was the Principal of the Defence College of Communications and Information Services and his efforts in transforming the College were recognised with him being appointed as an Officer of the British Empire (OBE).  He has a BSc (Hons) and three Masters level degrees comprising an MBA, MA in History, and an MSc in Strategic HR as well as being a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) and Chartered Management Institute (CMI), and the Learning Performance Institute (LPI).  He has also recently completed his first book offering an insight into 35 years of leadership and the lessons he has learnt.

Davinia Hernández-Leo is currently professor at the Information and Communitations Technologies Department of Universitat Pompeu Fabra, the coordinator of the Educational Technologies research line of the Interactive Technologies Group (GTI), Vice-Principal of the UPF Polytechnic School and the Director of its Unit for Teaching Quality and Innovation. Davinia was previously (2003-2007) a member of the (GSIC/EMIC group) multidisciplinary group at the University of Valladolid, Spain, where she received the M.S. and the Ph.D. degrees (European mention, several awards) in 2003 and 2007, respectively. She was been also visiting scholar at the Open University of the Netherlands (2006) and Virginia Tech (2012). Davinia has been honoured with several awards, such as the 2006-2007 European CSCL Award for Excellence in the field of CSCL Technology, Best Paper Award Computer Assisted Assessment Conference 2010, Best Paper Award of the International Conference In Advanced Learning Technologies 2004, ITWorldEdu2011. John Higgins was appointed Director General of DIGITALEUROPE, the association for the digital technology industry in Europe, in November 2011 following nine years leading its UK member association, Intellect.

After graduating from the University of East Anglia with an honours degree in Mathematics and then gaining a post graduate Diploma in Accounting and Finance, John began a career in IT. He trained as a systems analyst, held senior positions with Ernst & Young and worked in Chicago with leading software company SSA. In 1995 he was appointed CEO of the Rocket Networks, a California based dot.com that provided the world’s first online recording studios. He returned to the UK in 1998 and became Director General of the Computing Services and Software Association, one of Intellect’s predecessors.

John is a member of the governing body of the University of Warwick and recent chair of its audit committee.   John is President of the European Commission’s Strategic Policy Forum on Digital Entrepreneurship and was recently elected to the Board of the European Internet Foundation.  John’s other recent committee chair roles include the cross industry association council of the CBI, a government/industry space committee and the global policy action committee of the World IT Services Association, WITSA. He was board member of e-skills, the UK’s digital sector skills council and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. He was presented with two personal awards for outstanding contributions; first to the association sector in 2004 and then to the IT industry in 2008. Bryan is a consultant with extensive experience in needs assessment, training strategy development, evaluation and programme design. For several years he worked as the Senior Learning Solutions Officer at the UNHCR training centre in Budapest.

He works primarily with international organisations in the humanitarian and development sectors, and has completed projects for many United Nations agencies, as well as several international development NGOs and various United Kingdom governmental departments and private sector organisations.

He has written three books on training and HR, the most recent being Cultural Differences and Improving Performance (2009), which covers cross-cultural issues in the TNA process.

He has a particular interest in using systems thinking techniques to improve the design and evaluation of training programmes, and is currently writing a book looking at how to use systems thinking to carry out TNAs and evaluation. This will be published during 2016.

Paul Hunter comes originally from Belfast, Northern Ireland. After successfully completing his Bachelors and Masters degree at Cambridge University and post graduate study at Oxford University, Paul moved to Switzerland.

As Director of IMD’s Corporate Learning Network, Paul works with worldwide organizations across the globe helping them to evolve as learning organizations. After blowing up a fume hood at the University of British Columbia (UBC), Eric Jandciu completed his chemistry graduate work and pursued a master's degree in journalism. This transition was the beginning of a career that focuses more on the relatively safer fields of communicating and teaching science than on actually doing science.

Eric has worked as a freelance journalist, science writer, and grant writer. He has coordinated the copy editing of book and journal manuscripts at Springer in Heidelberg, Germany, and at LE-TeX in Leipzig, Germany.

Currently, Eric combines his passion for science, teaching, and science communication at the Science Centre for Learning and Teaching within the Faculty of Science at UBC, where he works on curriculum development and evaluation. Tanya Joosten is the Director of Digital Learning Research and Development at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) where she works to guide strategic digital learning earning efforts at the campus, state, and national levels, to develop innovative programming for the UWM campus, and to lead a team of researchers to advance the field of digital learning.  She is the co-director of the National Research Center for Distance Education and Technological Advancements supported by the U.S Department of Education.  

Tanya has been recognized by the Sloan-Consortium as a fellow for her work in blended and online learning.  She is a teacher of tech-enhanced, blended, and online courses in the field of communication for over 15 years, including online courses in human communication and technology and organizational communication at UWM, published author in communication technology in teaching and learning, including her recent book, Social Media for Educators, and chapter in, Blended Learning: Research Perspectives, a social scientist researching technology-mediated pedagogy and its impact on student outcomes, and a well-known speaker and consultant across the globe.

Lecturer at the University of Venda in the School of Education in the Department of Professional Studies.  Responsible for the Physical science methodology for  Physics and Chemistry pre-service teachers programme.  One of the main focus areas is the use of ICT where use of computer simulations is used.  My doctoral studies was on the use of computer simulations for knowledge and skills acquisition with the theoretical framework based on Cognitive Load and Cognitive Theory of multimedia learning, it is in Physics Education.

Educated at Makerere University, Kings College London and University of South Africa, with the following qualifications BSc (Maths Physics), Diploma in Education; MA Science Education Diploma in Science Education & PhD (Physics Education) respectively with regard to the universities.

My interests have grown with involvement in the use of ICT specifically computer simulations; social network Facebook, Whatsapp, twitter for rapid information delivery with the pre-service teachers and the previous 4 cohorts of teachers.  It has developed excitement and a love of the practical approach in the teaching of physical science.  Google docs changed the playing field wherein large pieces of data was easily retrieved and used for information with regard to the pre-service students.

Our groups are big and our fourth years are 511; the third years hovering at 600; second years 700 and the first years at 850 strong.  It is easy to get to know their details and thereafter communciate on google or emails.

Franzi v. Kempis is a self-taught YouTube editor, passionate developer of educational content and trained TV journalist with a history degree. She is currently working as editor-in-chief for the media initiative MESH Collective at the UFA Lab in Berlin. Her day-to-day work in a nutshell? Hannes Klöpper is a co-founder and Managing Director at iversity GmbH. He recently co-authored a book on the university in the 21st century in collaboration with distinguished Professor Yehuda Elkana (edition Körber-Stiftung). He holds a Dual-Masters in Public Administration from Columbia University and the Hertie School of Governance in Berlin and a B.A. in International Relations from the Technische Universität Dresden. Moreover, he spent a semester at SciencesPo Strasbourg and completed the Academy Year programme at the European College of Liberal Arts in Berlin. From 2010-2011, Hannes Klöpper was an associate at the stiftung neue verantwortung, working on a project that explored impact of digitalisation on education. In 2014, he joined the board of jurors for the OpenEducation Challenge and the "New Business Models" of the German government-initiated “Hochschulforum Digitalisierung”. Mehmet Korkmaz is a Learning and Development Specialist with the UNICEF Supply Division and is based in Copenhagen, Denmark. Prior to joining the HR team at UNICEF, he worked for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Rome, Italy. He has extensive experience in designing and delivering learning programmes for different target groups and leads the online learning initiatives for the UNICEF Supply Division. Mehmet holds a Master's degree in Sociology and Pedagogy and is specialised in blended learning, e-learning, instructional design, social media, educational technology and knowledge management. Jochen Kranzer, DI is managing partner and head of game design at OVOS realtime3D . Back in the days, he produced an award-winning installation for his master’s degree in architecture, building a virtual 3D Environment of an ancient city plaza where the user could travel in time. A game aficionado, intrigued by game technology since the age of 13, he eventually made his real passion a profession. Today, Jochen masterminds most games and interactive concepts and products at OVOS and developed a deep passion for playfull learning experiences. He designed and led the development of "Ludwig", "Lern Deutsch", the "ovos play Gamedesigner" and many more. In his spare time, he teaches game design at FH Hagenberg and TUW, drives his old VW Bus and plays with his little son.

Dr. Till Kreutzer is a lawyer (attorney-at-law), legal scholar and journalist. He is co–founder and editor of iRights.info, a non-profit information portal on copyright in the digital world for consumers and creators, awarded – inter alia – with the Grimme-Online-Award 2006. He is also an entrepreneur and founder of the iRights.Lab, an independent think tank on strategies for the digital world and the law firm iRights.Law. Till is a research fellow at the Hans–Bredow–Institute for media research at the University of Hamburg and a member of the Institute for Legal Issues of Free and Open Source Software (ifrOSS). Till is personal member of the German Commission for UNESCO. He teaches copyright law, trademark law, privacy law and personal rights at various institutions. He participated on several occasions as an invited expert of the German Parliament in the “Reform of Copyright in the Information Society” and at hearings in the European Parliament.

Thomas Kubitza is a researcher and PhD candidate in the Human Computer Interaction Group lead by Albrecht Schmidt at the University of Stuttgart in Germany. Thomas holds a Master in Computer Science from the University of Duisburg-Essen. His professional interests lie in the area of Human Computer Interaction and Ubiquitous Computing. Specifically he is interested in Smart Environments, their creation and programming. Many of Thomas’ projects involve the creation of advanced hardware and software prototypes. Within the meSch FP7 EU project he leads the development of a software and hardware platform that allows designers and curators to easily create interactive installations. In 2014 Thomas has worked for Microsoft Research Cambridge where he was part of the Sensors and Devices Group which is currently involved in the creation of the BBC micro:bit.

Sandra Kučina Softić is Assistant Director for Education and User Support at the University of Zagreb University Computer Centre (SRCE). She is also the Head of the E-learning Centre at SRCE and the Head of the Office for E-learning at the University of Zagreb. She is working on implementation of the e-learning at the University of Zagreb, for which in 2011 she received Rector's award for successful and motivated work on the development and systematic implementation of e-learning at the University of Zagreb. She is also the member of the University of Zagreb Committee for e-learning and internet services advising on the matters of e-learning. Her work is focused on monitoring and fostering the e-learning implementation in higher education institutions in Croatia and providing support and advice to institutions, teachers and students in implementation of new technologies in learning and teaching process.

Her field of interest is strategic decision making related to the implementation of e-learning, open and distance education, quality assurance, educational technologies and open educational resources. She has been involved in a number of projects (national and international) related to these fields and she also actively presents at international conferences.

She attained a master’s degree in Digital Education at the University of Edinburgh, UK in 2014.

She has been a member of EDEN Executive Committee since 2013 and in 2014 she received the EDEN Fellow Title.

TOBIAS KUTZNER received the B.Sc. degree in 2009 in Computer Science at University of Applied Science HS Lausitz, Germany, and his M.Sc. degree in 2012 at the same University. Parts of his Master Thesis he wrote at University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC). His research fields are client server solutions, mobile programming, web services, artificial intelligence and eLearning.  Before he began his study he has worked as a support employee in the company VEPRO Germany east, Germany.  Since 2012 he is working as administrator and developer for the eLearning platform at University of Applied Science HS Lausitz and since 2013 for eLearning platform at BTU Cottbus – Senftenberg too. In 2014 he started Ph.D. at ULPGC in research topic handwriting verification systems.

Involved in international educational projects for over 15 years. Currently involved in developing a new teacher training programme in the Gulf Region which has led to the introduction of technology enhanced learning and the recognition locally as the "Best use of ICT / eLearning in the Classroom" and 'Innovation in Education'. Has taken part in workshops within the region and  Europe where the discussion has centred on blended learning and improving classrooom methdology. Currently working on a collaborative project with deliverers of EAL in improving and enhancing the bachelor thesis programme that would combine the development of skills in academic writing with the support of a web based learning environment.

Ineke Lam is connected to Utrecht University, the Netherlands since 1981. At that moment she started her study Sociology. After her study she started her career as a researcher (PhD-student) at the same faculty. This resulted in a doctoral dissertation on ‘The myth of the Empty Nest’ in 1994. After finishing her PhD, Ineke switched from the faculty of Social Sciences to IVLOS, Institute of Education at the same university. First, she was involved in various research projects in secondary and higher education. Since 1999 she is more involved in consultancy work in higher education, mainly in ICT-related projects. She got her consultancy qualification in 2001. In the same year Ineke became the coordinator of the Centre for ICT in Education, a part of IVLOS. In 2007 this Centre was merged with the team ‘Educational Development’ and Ineke became the manager of this team.

Since 1^st January 2011 the training and consultancy part IVLOS operates as the Educational Development and Training group. This group is part of the Centre for Teaching and Learning (faculty of Social Sciences) of Utrecht University. Next to her management responsibilities Ineke has been project manager of various local, national and international projects. Within Utrecht University she coordinaties the 'EMP-projects'. Her main field of interests are ICT, curriculum development and professional development of teachers and trainers, and VLE.

Next to her professional activities Ineke’s main passion in life is flyfishing on salmon and sea trout in Norway. She is a member of the Dutch Women Fly Fishers (www.dwff.nl).

Michael is head of research, interaction designer and user experience expert at CREATE.21st century.

At CREATE Michael designs and works on new products and services in the area of digital learning technologies and media, Smart City participation tools and approaches, and mobility information services.

Michael got a Ph.D. from Northumbria University, Department of Arts, Design and Social Science, at Newcastle upon Tyne, UK. He is author for several research publications in the area of interaction design research.

He has been delivering training throughout the world, including 5 years as a lecturer in Business-German at Dublin City University in Ireland and several months in Mexico and Brazil. He has been designing, developing and delivering courses in various subjects for a diverse mix of cultures and communities, recently also in various African countries. Knut Linke is an e-learning research assistant at the University of Applied Science Weserbergland in Hameln, Germany.

Mr. Linke is developing Internet content since 1996. Before his time as researcher he worked for different companies in Germany in the sector of product and database development. During this time and partly fulltime, he studies at several universities in Europe and the states in the sector of business administration and informatics.

Esko Lius is known for inspiring learning projects which put emphasis on learners' own activity, transformative pedagogy, and versatile tools for authentic learning. Mobile learning and BYOx model are most often employed.

He is involved in designing strategies and systems for building up the capacities of the teaching staff, and he facilitates digital strategy processes of the management – both in Finland and in international projects, e.g. in Kosovo and Egypt.

He is curious enough to ask What if… and divergent and diligent enough to find new approaches in challenging situations. He sees that the connection between formal school learning, the world outside, and learner's own interest is paramount to generate deep learning.

Recently he has been pondering (and piloting) how open digital badges may change the paradigm in recognizing competences and learning.

Estie Lubbe is a Lecturer and Programme Leader for Financial Accounting in the School of Accounting at the North West University: Vaal Triangle Campus in Vanderbijlpark. She received an ITEA (Institutional Teaching Excellence) Award in 2013 from the NWU University. She serves on the Teaching and Learning Committee of the Faculty for Economic Sciences and IT. She was part of the pilot group to implement Smart guides (interactive study guides) on the campus. 

She uses the flipped classroom pedagogical model for third year Accounting students. Students are required to view short videos on the theory at home before the class session and this enables contact sessions to be devoted to practical work. This change enables more students to be engaged in the contact sessions and increase their confidence in the subject.

She is passionate about engaging students and guiding them to reach their full potential. She is an innovative academic who incorporates creative approaches in her teaching and inspires fellow academic colleagues in her faculty. Her current interests are flipped learning, creativity in teaching, engaging students and online assessment.

Davide Marocco received his PhD in Artificial Intelligence at the University of Calabria, Italy, in 2004. He is currently Associate Professor (Reader) of Cognitive Robotics and Intelligent Systems at Plymouth University, UK, and the coordinator of the local NVIDIA GPU Education Centre, where he teaches and promotes GPU computing within Universities in the UK in partnership with NVIDIA.

I always loved learning. Or rather, experiencing. I liked books but they needed to be experienced: a lot of effort... And then I discovered that there were many ways to teach and learn. And that this world does not stop, vibrant and lively. I was and am curious to discover these methods. I like to explore how far you can push. I never married only one Idea, perhaps for this reason I have more questions to ask than answers to give.

Alessia Messuti has a background in communication with a special focus on the use of new media for social inclusion and local development. Since 2009 she is working as a training specialist in both private and development sector, where she has gained experience in instructional design and quality assurance for e-Learning, facilitation of on-line and face-to-face training, educational research and web 2.0 for learning and social interaction. Giorgio Metta is director of the iCub Facility department at the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) where he coordinates the development of the iCub robotic platform/project. He holds a MSc cum laude (1994) and PhD (2000) in electronic engineering both from the University of Genoa. From 2001 to 2002 he was postdoctoral associate at the MIT AI-Lab. He was previously with the University of Genoa and since 2012 Professor of Cognitive Robotics at the University of Plymouth (UK). He is deputy director of IIT delegate to the international relations and external funding. In this role he is member of the board of directors of euRobotics aisbl, the European reference organization for robotics research. Giorgio Metta’s research activities are in the fields of biologically motivated and humanoid robotics and, in particular, in developing humanoid robots that can adapt and learn from experience. Giorgio Metta is author of approximately 250 scientific publications. He has been working as principal investigator and research scientist in about a dozen international as well as national funded projects.

At the crossroads of political science and educational research, Alexandra is currently working in the Educational Development Unit of the Institute for European Studies at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). She is designing and delivering a variety of educational programmes targeted both at students and professionals, using the blended learning approach to combine face-to-face lectures, online courses and webinars. A political scientist interested in educational technology, Alexandra is writing her PhD on the relation between technology and pedagogy in teaching political science. As Executive Director of Qatar Foundation International, Maggie champions K-12  Arabic language & Arab culture education and interactions between young people across geographic, cultural and social boundaries. Prior to joining QFI, Maggie was Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region at the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES), a leading democracy and governance NGO, where she implemented innovative programs in Egypt, Iraq, Iran, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, and Yemen. Darren Moon is Senior Learning Technologist at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), working closely with colleagues to develop pedagogically sound use of technolgies and improve student learning outcomes.

Claudia Musekamp is the CEO of Infoport GmbH, an e-learning consultancy and content developer from Berlin. 

Her company works with clients in various industries ranging from automobile and machinery to the health sector.

As a consultant, she developed the concept for the 2014  MOOC on the Economics of Land Degradation offered by the GIZ and the United Nations University.

Simon Nelson is Chief Executive of FutureLearn, the social learning platform and first UK-based provider of massive open online courses (MOOCs).

Simon founded the Open University-backed initiative in December 2012 and has quickly established it as a high quality entrant to the emerging online learning market. The FutureLearn site went live in September 2013; since then over two million people have registered, generating more than four million sign-ups to more than 200 courses. In May 2015, FutureLearn’s delivered the biggest single run of a MOOC ever, with a record of more than 440,000 people signing for a course from the British Council.

To date, FutureLearn has partnered with over 70 leading universities, specialist education institutions and centres of research excellence around the world to deliver over free online courses to its global community learners. Manuel Fradinho Oliveira is senior research scientist at Sintef. His research interests include learning, social media, serious games, user engagement, gamification, user behaviour change, virtual environments, and mixed reality. He has more than 100 refereed conference and journal publications to date. He founded HighSkillz in 2012, a start-up specializing in rapid competence development using serious games and gamification. I work as the E-learning Coordinator in Innlandet Hospital Trust, which covers the region where the Lillehammer Olympic Games were hosted in 1994.

Since 2013 I have been the Regional E-learning Coordinator for the South-Eastern Norway Regional Health Authority. The region has ten hospital trusts and five private non commercial hospitals. Together, 75.000 employees offer health services to 2,7 million people in the region, a total of 56 % of the population in Norway.

The learning site in the region is identical in all Hospital Trust’s, and the e-learning Coordinators collaborate extensively on most aspects around the common learning site.  It is my responsibility to lead this work.

Before I started working for the Innlandet Hospital Trust in 2011, I worked ten years as a Communication Advisor, taught in High School two years, before I moved into higher education and was a Project Manager for Life-long Learning at the University College in Lillehammer.

Marc Oswald is co-founder and CEO of Open Assessment Technologies (OAT), and a vocal proponent of interoperability through industry standards. Marc serves as chairman of the IMS Executive Board on Assessment (EBA), which he initiated in early 2015 with the goal to significantly improve the interoperability of assessment content based on the QTI standard. Dr. Pierre-Yves Oudeyer is Research Director at the French Institute for Research in Computer Science and Automation (Inria) and head of the Flowers lab and Ensta-ParisTech,France. He studies mechanisms of learning and development of sensorimotor, cognitive and social skills in humans and robots. Following a multidisciplinary approach, where computational and robotic sciences contribute to our understanding of humans, he focuses on the role self-organisation and active learning through interactions among brains, bodies and environment. In particular, he studies the role of curiosity and intrinsic motivation in the acquisition of new skills, and has been with his colleagues a pioneer in modelling curiosity in robots and artificial intelligence systems. These robotic experiments led to new hypotheses on the organisation of cognitive development in infants, and they progressively discover their body and how to interact with their environment. He also studied how new languages can form in populations of individuals, building and analysing populations of robots that invent and evolve their own languages. 

Recently, his team began to study how fundamental models of learning in children could inform the design of educational technologies. In particular, his team designed new artificial intelligence algorithms allowing tutoring software to personalise teaching sequences. His team also designed the first world-wide open-source 3D printed humanoid robot Poppy, which later on led to educational kits allowing children to discover and understand interactive programmable objects. 

He was awarded an ERC grant, the prize Le Monde for academic research, and has been previously working for 8 years at Sony Computer Science Lab, Paris. 

He is editor of the IEEE CIS Newsletter on Autonomous Mental Development, and associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Autonomous Mental Development, Frontiers in Neurorobotics, and of the International Journal of Social Robotics. Annette Q Pedersen has worked in adult teaching and teacher training for 14 years, first as a teacher, and since 2008 as e-learning consultant at the University of Copenhagen.

She works with strategies related to online and blended learning across the university, and particularly with digital literacy in the humanities. She is also part of the organizing committee of The PLE conference as well as on the advisory board of SXSWedu.

At the university she is facilitating and developing blended and online learning in collaboration with the teaching staff, both by incorporating blended learning approaches in the existing curriculum and as part of curriculum development. Cristina Petracchi is heading the e-learning Center in the Capacity Development Unit in FAO, she manages and coordinates the design, development, delivery and language adaptations of e-learning courses, blended learning programmes and face-to-face training events, for the benefit of FAO member countries. Within the context of the position she holds, Ms Petracchi also consolidates partnerships with United Nations agencies, academic institutions and universities, regional organizations and NGOs. Christian Poulsen is PhD in Sociology from Lund university. He has studied at Lund university and Universidad Complutense in Madrid. He has been involved in several projects related to the improvement of higher education teaching. The two last projects including, this present one, has been anchored in Case-based teaching. 

His research interests goes from student-oriented teaching to Learning Analytics, Feminism, Sociology of education and organizational development. 

He is currently external reader at Copenhagen Business School and consultant at Erhvervsakademi Sjælland.

Dr. Tamara Powell is the Director of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences Office of Distance Education at Kennesaw State University in Kennesaw, Georgia, USA, outside of Atlanta. Her PhD research focused on African American literature. Her current research focuses on retention strategies for at-risk students in online courses. Her faculty development workshops, including "Build a Web Course Workshop," were recognized with the Online Learning Consortium Award for Excellence in Online Faculty Development in 2010 and 2015. Richard Powers, Professor Emeritus of Literature, taught online literature, composition and information literacy classes from 1997-2014 for University of Maryland's University College, where he first started classroom teaching in 1988. Additionally, as Senior Faculty Trainer at UMUC, he trained over 3,000 faculty with the University of Maryland to teach online from 1998-2014.

Diane Reddy is Professor of Psychology and Director of the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning at UWM. She co-developed the technology-enabled U-Pace instructional approach, which won the 2012 National University Technology Network Distance Education Innovation Award, 2013 Desire2EXCEL Impact Award, and 2014 Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education Cooperative for Educational Technologies Outstanding Work Award. Dr. Reddy is PI on a randomized controlled trial evaluating U-Pace instruction funded by the U.S. Department of Education. She is also co-PI on the U.S. Department of Education grant establishing the national Distance Education and Technological Advancements Research Center and an EDUCAUSE, Next Generation Learning Challenges program grant focused on U-Pace instruction. Dr. Reddy is the recipient of the 2015 Brightspace Innovation Award in Teaching and Learning and the 2014 Online Learning Consortium Excellence in Online Teaching Award.

Dr. Herwig Rehatschek studied Computer Science and Electronics and received his M.Sc. and his Ph.D. from the University of Technology, Graz. From 1997 until 2008 he worked at the research company JOANNEUM RESEARCH. His main emphasis was on eLearning and digital media analysis. He participated in many international EC research projects and also managed and co-ordinated some of them. In 1999 Dr. Rehatschek won the Austrian state price in the category learning, knowledge and culture. In 2008 he joined the Medical University of Graz as a head of the unit organization of teaching and learning with media with the main task to develop and maintain the virtual medical campus, the eLearning platform of the university. Since then he was actively involved in the set-up and implementation of the learning management system and the development of learning content. He introduced virtualized lessons, a new virtual microscope, and eLectures. In 2013 he won the Dr. Michael Hasiba price for innovative teaching. In 2014 open educational resources (OER) have been introduced under his leadership. In 2015 he co-developed the training programme "eDidactics" (6 ECTS credits) which enables teachers to improve their eLearning skills.

Paul Rühl has been Managing Director of the Bavarian Virtual University (BVU - Virtuelle Hochschule Bayern) since its foundation in 2000. The BVU is an institute set up by 30 Bavarian universities and universities of applied sciences. It is funded by the Free State of Bavaria.

The BVU finances the production and the operation of online-courses which the member universities can integrate into their study programmes. All courses provide individual tutoring; students of the member universities can take part free of charge. In the academic year of 2014 / 2015 there were 150,000 enrolments by nearly 50,000 Bavarian students.

Tapio Säävälä has been working in the field of education since 1985. He started his career as a Special Needs Education Teacher, and worked as a School Headmaster and as a Senior Adviser in the National Board of Education in Finland.

He joined the European Commission in 2002 to work for the lifelong learning policies, and key competences in particular. Currently, he is Head of Unit at the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency, responsible to adult learning, VET and eTwinning and EPALE platforms.

Adam is a media executive and documentary film maker with international experience in television, print, new media and strategic communications. Adam has worked in a senior role at the BBC, in the independent production sector and has served at board level in a large multinational media group.

After reading English at Cambridge, Adam took a post graduate diploma in Journalism at Cardiff University. He then joined the BBC on the prestigious News Trainee Scheme. He worked as a journalist, producer and executive producer on Panorama, The Money Programme and other high profile shows. Adam led BBC filming teams on five continents often in hazardous conflict zones, politically difficult or challenging territories such as Saddam Hussein’s Iraq, the Arctic Circle and the jungles of central Africa.

After leaving the BBC, Adam became part of the senior team at Tinopolis as it grew to be one of the UK’s leading independent production companies. Professor Gilly Salmon is one of the world's leading thinkers around learning futures and pedagogical innovation.  She researches and publishes widely on the themes of innovation and change in Higher Education and the exploitation of new technologies of all kinds in the service of learning.  She is internationally renowned for her significant contributions to online education including research, learning design, teaching methods and the use of digital technologies.

I was born in 1958 in Karlsruhe, Germany, studied psychology in Gießen and Frankfurt/Main, got my Ph.D. in 1987 and my Habilitation in 1997 (subject: Lying in everyday life). Afterwards I held several substitute professorships in Social Psychology in German universities.

Currently I am a Senior eLearning Administrator in the Computing Center of the Goethe University Frankfurt am Main and Lecturer (blended learning courses on soft skills for law students). Additionally I work as coach (didactic methods for lawyers and for judges) for the Chamber of Lawyers, Frankfurt am Main, for the Hessian Ministry of the Interior and for the Hessian Ministry of Law.

Daniel R. Schneider is currently project leader and lead developer for Safe Exam Browser (SEB) at the Center for Educational Development and Technology at ETH Zurich (Switzerland). In this position, Daniel is coordinating technical aspects, public relations and contacts to other institutions using the open source application SEB. As software developer he is also responsible for design, implementation and further development of SEB. Safe Exam Browser is an open source software application used to secure Windows and Mac OS X computers in the context of online examinations. The SEB project raised the awareness that e-assessments and online examinations can be conducted without expensive commercial products; download numbers are constantly growing and SEB is used by numerous universities and other institutions all around the world, including the USA, India, Israel, UK, Germany, Switzerland, Norway, the Netherlands and various other European countries.

As a headmaster of a secondary school, Heidi takes a strong interest in improving learning skills, learning in (international) context, education innovation and languages.

Her school, Guldensporencollege Kaai in Kortrijk, takes a strong interest in innovation. E.g. It was one of the first schools in Belgium to experiment with Content and Language Integrated Learning (2007-2011) and it is currently implementing CLIL French and CLIL English throughout the school. The school has recently started a pilot project in 5^th year which combines CLIL with MOOCS in French or English. Its aim is to improve language skills and lifelong learning skills at the same time.

Luc Steels studied linguistics at the University of Antwerp (Belgium) and computer science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA). His main research field is Artificial Intelligence covering a wide range of intelligent abilities, including vision, robotic behavior, conceptual representations and language. In 1983 he became a professor of computer science at the University of Brussels (VUB). He has been co-founder and chairman (from 1990 until 1995) of the VUB Computer Science Department (Faculty of Sciences).
He founded the Sony Computer Science Laboratory in Paris in 1996 and became its first director. Currently he is ICREA research professor at the Institute for Evolutionary Biology (CSIC,UPF). Born in Bombay, India, in 1974, he received B.E. in Computer Engineering from University of Pune, in 1996 and M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science from Columbia University, New York, USA , in 1998 and 2003 respectively.

Currently his research interests span areas of augmented reality, vision as well as machine learning.

An MP at 25, and a Business Minister in the Coalition Government of 2010-2015 aged 32, Jo Swinson wasted no time in shaking up the political establishment. An inspiring role model for young women, Jo secured Government support for gender pay transparency in large companies.  She highlighted the problem of body image pressure affecting young people, especially girls, and co-founded the Campaign for Body Confidence, working with the fashion, media and advertising industries to drive change. Jo was one of the first Government Ministers to have a baby and take maternity leave while in office. Jo’s husband, Duncan Hames, made history as the first MP to carry a baby (their son Andrew) through the voting lobby of the House of Commons.

A champion for consumers, Jo led a crackdown on unscrupulous payday lenders and introduced new powers to tackle rogue traders. She is the architect of the Consumer Rights Act which for the first time gives consumers protection when buying digital content.

For 10 years the MP for East Dunbartonshire in the west of Scotland, Jo was one of the key voices advocating for Scotland staying in the UK at the independence referendum. Combined with her experience at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, she is well placed to talk about the future uncertainties of the EU referendum, possible Brexit and a second Scottish referendum. When she’s not working, you can find Jo running (she finished the 2011 London Marathon in under 4 hours) or hiking up a mountain in her native Scotland.

Jo’s work has taken her from the dusty heat of Sierra Leone to the ice caves of Svalbard, from investigating human rights abuses in Chechnya to training women MPs in Iraq. She has spoken at the United Nations and the OECD, and appeared on programmes as varied as Question Time and Blue Peter.

Jo’s earliest forays into politics was in the Debating Society at Douglas Academy in Milngavie, but leading her school Young Enterprise company to the Scottish finals gave Jo a taste for business and she gained a First Class degree in Management from the London School of Economics. 

Marketing roles followed at Yorkshire radio station Viking FM and fast-growing media company Space and People, before the lure of politics saw Jo elected as the Lib Dem MP for her home seat of East Dunbartonshire in 2005, becoming the “Baby of the House”.

Carlos Turro is M.D. and PhD from the Universitat Politecnica de Valencia. He is working there since 1992 and since 2000 is Head of its Media Services unit. From that place he has developed the Polimedia service as a system to create Video Learning Objects. Currently, the Polimedia system is used by more than fifteen universities and has produced more than 18000 learning objects. The Polimedia system was granted with the Spanish national award FICOD 2009 for digital services.

He has and is working in different EU- funded projects. He has worked at the Translectures project, for automatic and interactive transcription and translation of video lectures and the Rec:All project researching how video cab be used in learning environments.

About a year ago I started working at Sika to lead the Blended Learning Project - a project that has already resulted in the release several learning tools for Sika employees in 91 different countries. The project team had members from all over the world and different divisions of the company.

Learning and teaching has been a recurring theme in my life. I studied to become a primary school teacher in Rotterdam and after a few years of teaching I went back to college. This time I went to the Radboud University in Nijmegen where I studied Pedagogy and Education Sciences.

Before I started at Sika I worked at the oldest Swiss publishing house Orell Füssli in the Learning Media team where I was project leader of their new eBook platform. Before that I worked at the University of Applied Sciences of Northwestern Switzerland at the School of Education. Here I was a lecturer and guided other professors in the use of new media in education.

Dick van Dijk is Creative Director at Waag Society. Part of his role at Waag Society is creating interactive concepts, strategizing design research and user involvement, and monitoring the development of the actual ‘thing’. He is mostly interested in the crossover between virtual and physical interactions, in creating a narrative space, a place for imagination.

As concept developer he has worked on projects as diverse as the MuseumApp, the Storyville storytelling apps, Scottie and Operation Sigismund. Dennis van Oeveren  is Lecturer and a Master Learning and Innovation at  Landstede Group  in the Netherlands. He is teaching at the VET (Vocational Education and Training).

His approach is to challenges students to be the best they can be, to be themselves, to have respect for others, to think about their social import and take responsibility for themselves and others.

He is helping  students to discover and develop their talents. Personal development and learning - educational theory and didactics - are inextricably linked. Selection processes are a leitmotiv throughout the entire educational programme. Counselling is an integral and continuous part of this.

He is  constantly examine the processes and the concepts to make sure they are what is best for the students we teach and is always learning, reading, listening. Creative in his thinking and approach. Change up a lesson to make it more engaging or increase student motivation. Adopt a more unconventional approach to handling challenging students so as to develop a stronger rapport.

Close the gap between the traditional images of teachers so he can determine what is best for each student to best apply these new changes. Exploring topics with other educators, sharing what they know with others, it’s not about having all the answers; it’s about asking the right questions.

He  want to make a difference. He belief’s that being an educator is a great way to make his mark in the world and he don’t take it for granted and look for opportunities by his actions and not just with words.  But he is also care enough to make tough decisions even when it’s not popular and accepted.

Karen Vignare, Ph.D., currently serves as Vice Provost, the Center for Innovation in Learning and Student Success at University of Maryland University College (UMUC) leading the search and evaluation for next generation learning models. The Center for Innovation in Learning serves as the research and development arm of UMUC’s academic organization. I have over 20 years of experience as a biology and geography teacher in Sotunki Upper Secondary School and Sotunki Distance learning Centre in the City of Vantaa, Finland. My work orientation, nevertheless, has always been more of a philosopher of learning and school.

Straight from my early work years I found it curious, but at the same time fascinating, how the classroom reality in the school as we know it still so faithfully defended itself against the external world, which, however, was experiencing a deep reaching technological and social transition.

Recently a plausible explanation entered my mind. Learning and school are two completely separate and unrelated concepts.

The evidence is all around us. It can hardly stay undetected. Reshaping a work culture typical to school is not possible unless admitted that it is not possible. “What we cannot speak about we must consign to silence."

I have also sunk my arms deep in clay with virtual learning surroundings in Second Life.

Charlotte Webb is an artist, researcher and writer. She is Project Manager, Student Engagement (Digital) at the University of the Arts London (UAL), where she manages institutional research projects about students' experiences of digital technology for their learning. Transforming how the World Bank Group and its staekholders learn from independent evaluation was her primary focus, working with IEG evaluators on shaping their products and engagement tools for enhanced uptake and usability - with the ultimate objective to deepen World Bank Group impact and effectiveness. Monika's teams also delivered IT supported analytical tools and coordinated partnerships and capacity development for evaluation, both within the Bank Group and externally. In her previous assignment, as Director for Knowledge, Learning and Results for Sustainable Development at the World Bank, Monika oversaw quality and portfolio management for knowledge services that were specifically designed to strengthen sustainable development. She was an advocate for innovative approaches in generating new knowledge and learning opportunities for the Bank Group and its clients.

Monika has worked for several years with the private sector, setting up and leading within the International Finance Corporation (IFC) its Business Line for Sustainable Business Advisory.  She also worked with the World Bank Institute (WBI) where she built and led the Global Development Learning Network and Multimedia Division at the World Bank Institute (WBI), spearheading the Institute’s engagement with an international partnership of independent Learning Centers.  In 2000, Monika led the team that designed and delivered the World Bank’s first global innovation competition, the Development Marketplace.  Monika brings private sector experience also from working several years with the Boston Consulting Group.  She holds a PhD in business economics.  Monika and her family live in Washington DC.

His main tasks are the development of the authoring tool LernBar and the management of a lot of media production projects. In his research he engages with the topics authoring tools and Web 2.0-applications especially in the context of collaborative content production.

Craig Weiss is an e-learning expert, blogger, analyst and speaker. He is the founder and CEO of E-Learning 24/7, which provides LMS consulting services to buyers and advisory and analyst services to e-learning vendors.

In 2015, he was named the most influential person in the world for e-learning.

Craig writes the E-Learning 24/7 blog, which is read every week in 154 countries, territories and colonial territories.

Since he launched the blog in late 2009, his forecasts and projections on e-learning have been over 90% accurate.

Additionally, Craig launched a think tank for corporate online learning in May 2015. It is the first of its kind in the industry.

He speaks around the world, with recent presentations in the United States, Saudi Arabia and Australia.

Craig holds a Master of Science degree in Mass Communications from Oklahoma State University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism from the University of Rhode Island.

Elke Wemhoff has worked in the area of further education and training in development cooperation at GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit/German Development Cooperation) for almost 10 years. She currently works as project manager in the area of digital learning and virtual cooperation at the Academy for International of Cooperation of GIZ.

A big part of her work deals with e-learning capacity development projects in different parts of the world, among them Southeast Asia, Africa and the South Caucasus. During the past one and a half year, she has coordinated among other things the development of e-learning capacities in two GIZ projects in Indonesia. In these projects she has accompanied the training institutions of Indonesian Ministries in developing a digital strategy and in developing and implementing e-learning courses independently, in order to use technology-enhanced education and training to reach the high number of potential learners spread all over the islands of Indonesia.

Adrian Wilke ist wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter in der Fachgruppe Didaktik der Informatik an der Universität Paderborn. Dort ist er im Projekt "MLS - Mobile Learning in Smart Factories" beschäftigt. Ziel des Projekts ist eine Verbesserung der Qualität der Ausbildung im Maschinenbau durch den Einsatz von Tablet-Computern und einer arbeitsplatzorientierten, didaktisch aufbereiteten Webanwendung.

Zuvor studierte Herr Wilke Informatik mit Nebenfach Psychologie an der Universität Paderborn. Inhaltliche Schwerkunkte dort waren die Bereiche Analyse von Dokumenten- und Autorennetzwerken, sowie Lernen und Metakognition. Nach seinem Studium war er als Project Engineer in der Softwareentwicklung im Bereich Predictive Analytics tätig.

Lynn joined the CREDO team as a Quantitative Research Analyst in 2012. While at CREDO, Lynn has completed work on the Charter Growth and Replication Study, the 2013 National Charter School Study, the California State Study, and other projects including taking a lead role in the design of CREDO's current file and processing server.  

Prior to his time at CREDO, Lynn performed research, program evaluations, and administered performance pay programs at the Office for Education Policy as part of his duties as a Distinguished Doctoral Fellow in the Department of Education Reform at the University of Arkansas. Before his time at the University of Arkansas, Lynn spent 11 years as a public school teacher in Arkansas.

Lynn earned a B.A. (Magna Cum Laude) in music education and a M.Ed. in educational leadership from Arkansas Tech University in Russellville, Arkansas and his PhD. in education policy from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville.

Teri Shaffer Yamada received a master’s degree in Southeast Asian languages and literatures in 1975 and a doctorate in Buddhist Studies from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1985. She has studied seven Asian languages, including Chinese, Japanese and Khmer, and lived in Japan for six years. In 2002 she organized the Nou Hach Literary Association (www.nouhachjournal.net) to promote the development of literacy and modern literature in Cambodia. This NGO publishes the only literary journal in Cambodia, sponsors yearly literary awards, and promotes writers workshops in Cambodia. Currently she is the Chair of the Department of Asian and Asian American Studies at CSU Long Beach. Her research interests include modernity and Southeast Asian literature, development and sustainability in Cambodia. Her publications include the compilation Virtual Lotus: Modern Fiction of Southeast Asia (Ann Arbor: University of Michigan Press, 2002), Modern Short Fiction of Southeast Asia: A Literary History (Ann Arbor: Association for Asian Studies, 2009), and ‘Just a Human Being’ and Other Tales from Contemporary Cambodia (Nou Hach Literary Association: Translation Series, No 1, Charleston S.C., 2013). She has written numerous articles on modern Southeast Asian literature and political culture, modern Cambodian literature and culture, and the Cambodian diaspora. 

Prof. Yamada developed the course “Asian Eats” as an introduction to Asia through the comparative exploration of Asian foodways. It introduces students to the geography of Asia, and the importance of environment (climate and soil quality) on the production of specific types of food and sustainability; the aesthetics of presentation and food as a form of social communication. Through this course, students are introduced the concepts of diffusion, transculturation, globalization, and sustainability using  rice, tea, and curry as examples. To promote the study of Asia among Generation Y, she has developed this course in three different modalities: flipped, active learning, and online. Each develops different skill sets for students beyond the acquisition of subject content cultures.

Aleksandra Zemke graduated from the University of Warsaw with a degree in Sociology and from the University of Amsterdam with a degree in Conflict Resolution and Governance. She worked in media and public relations until in 2011 she founded Smilemundo, a non-profit based in Barcelona that aims to foster a sustainable developmental process by means of innovative ideas using the Internet. Since then, Zemke has devoted her work to developing innovative tools for education and awareness building. From 2013 on, she has been creating SmileUrbo, an award winning educational game, for which she was awarded the World Summit Youth Award (Brasil, 2015), which honors excellence for the use of the Internet for social empowerment. SmileUrbo is an interactive simulation game designed to teach teamwork and consensus building within the community. Privately, Zemke is a fan of design, new technology, and social entrepreneurship, all of which are tools that Smilemundo uses in its many creative projects.
