Elisabeth (Lise) Agerbaek is an Associated Professor at Lillebaelt Academy, University of Applied Science in Odense, Denmark. She has published articles and books on the use of e-portfolios as a learning tool and how to design for web and online media. She teaches Philosophy of Science and Digital Design at the BA in Digital Concept Development.

She is educated MA in Philosophy and Design and is CEO of own Graphical Design company. Current area of research is acknowledging informal learning through digital badges. Karam Alhamad is a specialized researcher, analyst, policy advocate, and human rights activist. Native to Syria, Alhamed has extensive knowledge and firsthand experience with development and governance initiatives inside and outside Syria. Since 2015, he has worked in projects with media, research and development supported by entities like USAID/OTI and Harvard University. Because of his previous work in data collection, journalism, and program development, Alhamad provides an in-depth and composite knowledge of Syria, one of the most complicated and heightened crises of our time. His voice provides a sophisticated look into the complicity of Syria, and he has developed a wide-ranging network of activists, community organizations, and local council members on the ground from which he draws information. Alhamad has faced many barriers to education faced by Syrian communities including; inability to document previous education, direct threats of violence and imprisonment.

Dr. Dale Allen is president and co-founder of DXtera Institute, where he sets and leads strategic direction to remove digital integration barriers for postsecondary institutions.

Allen previously served as special assistant to the president for Innovation at Quinsigamond Community College (QCC), leading development of education and workforce development components of three National Manufacturing Innovation Institutes. He also served as special assistant to the Massachusetts Commissioner of Higher Education, leading policy development for college and career pathways. Formerly, he served as vice president for Community Engagement at QCC, where he oversaw the Transformation Agenda, a $20 million project funded by U.S. Department of Labor.  Allen also founded and was principal director of 1421 Transformation Group.

He holds master’s and bachelor’s degrees from Springfield College (Massachusetts) and master’s and doctorate degrees in Public Policy from University of Massachusetts Boston.

Alejandro (Ale) Armellini is Professor of Learning and Teaching in Higher Education and Dean of Learning and Teaching at the University of Northampton.

Ale’s key role is to lead change in the area of learning and teaching across all schools and services at Northampton. Three aspects of Ale’s work are (1) the development, implementation and evaluation of Northampton’s Learning and Teaching Strategic Plan, (2) the development of a robust framework for continuous professional development for academic staff, and (3) fostering evidence-based, innovative practices in both campus-based and online learning and teaching. Ale’s research focuses on learning innovation, online pedagogy, course design in online environments, institutional capacity building and open practices.

Ale has extensive international teaching and programme development experience across different education sectors and modes of study. Over the years, he has used, researched and refined evidence-based design-for-learning interventions to promote positive change in further and higher education. Teams under his leadership have researched the application of learning technologies in diverse academic settings. His PhD tutees research specific areas in the field of educational technology, pedagogy, openness and innovation. Ale is active in consultancy work globally.

Graham Attwell is Director of Pontydysgu, a research and development company based in Wales. Pontydysgu are a partner in the EmployID project and are active in developing online social learning programmes as well as systems for providing and understanding Labour Market Information. Paul Bacsich is the Founder and Managing Director of Matic Media Ltd, a consultancy active in online learning since 1996. In addition he consults for the SeroHE division of Sero Consulting Ltd as a Senior Associate.

He has a long-standing interest in Open Education via a large EU project (POERUP) and several EU/European Parliament studies: he is Co-Coordinator of the Open Education Working Group and an Ambassador for the global advocacy of OER and a member of the OER Advocacy Committee of ICDE. 

He is a co-founder of Multeversity, a start-up in online/blended post-secondary education which aims in due course to be an accredited university and higher vocational provider. He also has had involvement in other early-stage online providers over the last six years and has done several studies of them.

His current main publicly visible activities are in leadership in e-learning, via the Erasmus+ D-TRANSFORM project, and Open Education policy analysis across EU Member States (he expects the report will be published soon). These draw on and continue his work over 10 years work on EU open and distance education projects.

In addition to his public work he consults for a number of international, government, commercial, venture fund and university clients on market/competitor/pricing research, policy, education funding models and retention strategies. He has recently finalised a report on credit recognition and transfer for online masters' programmes, for a university client in Canada.

In 2015-16 Paul chaired the review panel for the Vision and Strategy Appraisal of the UK Open University Library, where he interviewed over 70 staff and students and carried out substantial comparative and policy research. He also chaired the E-learning review panel for Uppsala University, with three days of intensive meetings and presentations, and spent four months chairing a task force for the National Forum for Learning and Teaching in Ireland to prepare a scoping document on infrastructure issues related to online learning. He also continued work on reviewing European and Anglophone country activity in ICT in higher education for national agencies in the UK and will soon start work on another review of a department in a leading UK university.

Some of his recent thinking can be found in his UNESCO policy brief on "Alternative Models of Education Delivery" and in a paper for the "Open Education 2030" higher education workshop run by the EU. He remains very interested in "Multiversity" models (see Multeversity) and competence-based provision, based on his earlier studies on "Time and e-learning", developed from a speech given in Austria, a country with which he has increasing links.

In the university phase of his career he was a researcher at Oxford University, had many roles over 25 years at the UK Open University, and was for seven years Professor of Telematics at Sheffield Hallam University and then a Director at the UK e-University. He was also Visiting Professor at Middlesex University and Advisor to the Rector of the Arab Open University.

He has knowledge of and/or experience in higher education in many developed countries.

Nicole Baker Rosa is the Head of Human Design at Kedge – a global strategic design, foresight, creativity and innovation firm based in Orlando, Florida. She leads the organization’s daily operations and people development efforts, ensuring a human-centric culture across the Kedge ecosystem. Nicole is an experienced speaker and curriculum developer partnering with a variety of industries and fields. She has previously worked in the Continuing Education sector shaping, executing and analyzing non-credit online and face-to-face program offerings. Nicole holds a Master of Arts in Interpersonal Communication and Diversity Certificates from the University of Central Florida as well as a Bachelor of Science in Public Relations from the University of Florida. She is a published author in journals discussing topics such as generational perceptions in the workplace and organizational communication rules. Marzia Baldassari is the Volunteer Learning Resource Specialist in the United Nations Volunteers programme (UNV), based in Bonn, Germany, where she coordinates and delivers learning initiatives for 6500+ UN Volunteers across the globe through the design, development, delivery of e-learning courses, blended learning programmes and face-to-face training activities.

In her role, she coordinated the development of the first UNV-specific online learning platform, that has grown to approximately 23,000 users in just over 12 months as well as prepared the content for UNV-tailored e-learning courses.

Marzia is passionate about education, learning and training. Her experience varies from the community and voluntary sector to private companies to international organizations in both a paid and voluntary capacity. Originally from Rome, Italy, she has travelled extensively in Europe, the Americas and the Middle East and has developed a strong interest in human development.  She believes learning is a key component to any organization as it provides added value for individuals in various shapes of knowledge, skills and attitudes both at personal and professional level.

Within the current position, Marzia is also responsible for outreach and works to expand partnerships on learning with United Nations agencies, learning institutions, and other stakeholders.

Director of David Banes Access and Inclusion Services and formerly CEO, at the Qatar Assistive Technology and Accessibility Center, David has developed services ensuring the digital inclusion of disabled people. He works across Middle East and Europe to address how access is maintained during periods of technical and social change, seeking to build capacity, linking awareness, policy, technology development and the need for training.

With a background in special needs education and supporting digital inclusion in Europe, he supports emerging access ecosystems promoting cooperation between states, supports development of accesisble technology solutions and content.

Recent work includes a framework for contextualisation of access technology, transference of knowledge across communities and a policy framework to address the rights of people with a disability. His current activity includes educational support for refugees and the disruptive innovation upon the access industry.

Ernesto Barrios is Learning Office manager at Repsol. He is an Industrial Engineer with an MBA, and a background of more than 20 years in different business and countries with Repsol. Originally from Peru, Ernesto has lived and worked in USA, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, and in Spain since 2005. During this experience, he early understood that people is the main driver of change within organizations, which took him to shift his career into the learning and development areas.   

Currently, Ernesto is a member of the corporate university of Repsol. He created the learning strategy, the instructional model and the content factory that they are running. During his participation Ernesto will share with us how they faced this creative and change process, what main decisions were made and how they embedded their instructional model in an on-line tool that not only assures the instructional design, but reduces production costs and times as well.

Dubbed the 'Willy Wonka of Design and Science', award-winning Director and Designer of Experiences Dr. Nelly Ben Hayoun is a critical explorer and a fearless and passionate provocateur. In 2014 Wired magazine awarded her with a WIRED Innovation Fellowship for her work to date and its 'significant impact on the world' whilst in 2013, Icon Magazine touted Ben Hayoun as one of the 50 international designers 'shaping the future'. Additionally, in 2015, she was nominated for a Women of the Year Achievement Award which rewards, since 1955, women 'who have made a significant achievement' and 'are being recognised for their strides in making the world a better place'. Nelly is Designer of Experiences at the SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) Institute, Chief of Experiences at WeTransfer where she develops experiential content for the digital platform and its 40 millions active users a month, a member of the Space Outreach and Education committee at the International Astronautical Federation, a United Nations Advisor to the UN VR (Virtual Reality) labs, an advisory board member at AIGA (American Institute for Graphic Arts) in Los Angeles, and a visiting professor at the Royal College of Arts and the Architectural Association. Nelly assembled and directs the International Space Orchestra (ISO) – the world first orchestra of space scientists and astronauts from NASA and through this has collaborated with Grammy award-winning musicians such as Beck, Damon Albarn, Bobby Womack, The Prodigy, Penguin Café, Ed Banger Records, Savages and most recently Icelandic post-rock band Sigur Rós.

She is a keynote speaker and has spoken worldwide about the value of experiential design practices in the context of outreach, community and education. Her work has been exhibited at the National Museum of China, MOMA, V&A and other leading design institutions.

Ben Hayoun is the author and director of two feature length movies. She was awarded one of the UK largest artistic awards, The Arts Council England Exceptional Award for her feature-length movie Disaster Playground. Disaster Playground is following the chain of commands in place in the event of hazardous asteroid impacting the earth. It was nominated for a Vision Award at SXSW 2015 and is distributed worldwide on Netflix and other digital platforms. Paola Antonelli, senior curator at MOMA declared about it: 'It's Dr. Strangelove meets This Is Spinal Tap. You straddle a big red phone and go on a wild ride along a chain of command that is complex and exhilarating'. Nelly and her studios have also worked and consulted for the likes of world-class clients including NASA, BBC, Lego, Airbnb HQ, XL Recordings, AIGA (American Institute for Graphic Arts) and Mattel amongst many others. Her latest project; The Life the Sea and the Space Viking, bringing together space scientists and vikings in a boat to collect form of life for outer space colononisation was selected as one of the Best of The Year  series 2016 by the Metropolitan Museum in NYC.

In 2017, Ben Hayoun has launched the University of the Underground, a free postgraduate university based in the underground of the urban spaces, composed of dreamers of the day and supporting unconventional research practices. 

Nelly received her MA with distinction from the Royal College of Arts in Design Interactions, and she is finalizing her PhD in Human Geography and political philosophy from Royal Holloway, University of London. In 2016, she was awarded with Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London Teaching award.

Gordana Benat has worked as Project Manager in Croatian Academic and Research Network - CARNet in the Department for Support to Education since 2005. She continuosly supports and educates teachers in the area of implementation of ICT in synergy with contemporary pedagogical approaches in teaching. 

Currently CARNet is involved in a national project e-Schools: Establishing a System for Developing Digitally Mature Schools (pilot project). Within this project, Gordana is coordinating the development of e-School Learning Scenarios for teachers of STEM subjects in primary and secondary school. 

Gordana is also involved in EU project ATS2020 - Assessment of Transversal Skills on validation and evaluation of the impact of the ATS2020 learning model focusing on transversal skills in 30 schools in Croatia using mixed-method evaluation.

Dr. Tarek R. Besold is a Lecturer in Data Science at City, University of London, conducting research at the intersection between artificial intelligence, computational creativity, and cognitive systems. He studied mathematics, computer science, and logic in Erlangen, Zaragoza, and Amsterdam, obtained a PhD from the Institute of Cognitive Science in Osnabrück, and worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the KRDB Research Centre of the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano and at the Digital Media Lab of the University of Bremen. Among others, Dr. Besold was the General Chair of the HLAI 2016 Joint Multi-Conference on Human-Level Artificial Intelligence, and founder and/or organizer of several international workshop series bridging between AI and cognitive science. He was co-editor of the books “Computational Creativity Research: Towards Creative Machines” and “Concept Invention: Foundations, Implementations, Social Aspects and Applications”, and serves in different editorial functions for the Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research (JAIR), for Frontiers in Psychology: Cognition, and for Biologically Inspired Cognitive Architectures (BICA).

Martin Bregnhøi is a teacher, musician, autodidact web developer and entrepreneur who has been teaching and lecturing for more than 25 years.  With a background as Percussionist he has been teaching polyrhythms and improvisation at the Royal Academy of Music in Copenhagen, Denmark for two decades. In 2001 he cofounded the multimedia production company Bongobeat. Over the years he has been giving hundreds of lectures and classes on subjects like Animation, Music Production, Web development and Latin Percussion. Present he is a fulltime Lecturer in web development and Motion Graphics at the Copenhagen School of Design and Technology.

Vicky Brown is the Learning Technology Manager at the University of Northampton. Her primary role is supporting staff in using technology to enhance teaching and learning, thus enabling her colleagues to deliver creative and innovative teaching inside and outside the traditional classroom.

She promotes and contributes to the development of a suite of learning tools that the Learning Technology team maintains, whilst seeking out new complementary applications to provide technological solutions according to the needs of the teaching & professional community. Ilona Buchem (PhD) is Professor for Media and Communication at Beuth University of Applied Sciences in Berlin. She graduated with a Master’s degree in Applied Linguistics at the University of Warsaw (Poland), Concordia University (WI, USA) and University Duisburg-Essen (Germany). She studied Educational Sciences at Humboldt University in Berlin and obtained her PhD degree in Business Education in 2009. Her research and teaching focus on the intersections of digital media and society, with special focus on emerging technologies such as social, mobile, wearable and smart technologies. Her research interests include Digital Collaboration, Digital Diversity, Digital Learning and Digital Leadership. Ilona Buchem has led a number of R&D projects dedicated to emerging digital media for learning and digital strategies in organisations. She is the Chair of the Special Interest Group on Wearable Technology Enhanced Learning at the European Association of Technology Enhanced Learning (EATEL), the founder of the Europortfolio German Chapter and a member of several organisations related to distance education and technology-enhanced learning, including the Association of Media in Science (GMW) and the European Distance Education Network (EDEN). Richard Cannane is the Global Training & Development Manager at Trafigura (Geneva), a global commodities trading company. He joined Trafigura in 1999 in the Metals & Minerals Operations department. Between 2007 and 2014 he was the global manager for Lead & Zinc Concentrates Operations as well as a project manager for processes and systems integrations He is founding member if the HSEC committee. Richard has lived and worked in Australia, Switzerland and China, as well as working on various projects with the company in over 20 countries.

Róisín is Digital Learning Manager for the Humanitarian Capacity Building team. They are a dedicated team that designs and runs specialist training programs for Save the Children and the sector as a whole. Róisín’s focus is to develop and manage digital partnerships to deliver on the organization’s vision of scalable, flexible, immersive and sustainable online learning for humanitarians. Her previous roles have been based in Technology Enhanced Learning and Academic Skills Development services. She is interested in the potential for gamification, serious games and scenario-based learning.

Chris Cavey is Open Learning Manager at the British Council. He leads on the development of the British Council's MOOCs on the FutureLearn platform which have attracted more than 3.5m registrations worldwide.

Chris has worked in English language teaching and content development for over 20 years and, as well as MOOCs, he has delivered podcasts, TV programmes, resource books and newspaper articles for teachers and learners of English. He is interested in reaching a mass audience of language learners and teachers in innovative ways.

Laura Cezanne is Head of Regional Learning Germany at Merck – a leading science and technology company in healthcare, life science and performance materials based in Darmstadt, Germany.

Her current projects are focusing on the individualization and digitalization of learning offers and tools as well as implementing new learning methods like MOOCathons and WOL into the organization. Shaping a self-learning organization is one of the overall goals a L&D department has to focus on.

Marianne’s work has focused on developing strategies to increase educational opportunities for all. She has developed a multi-disciplinary approach using digital technology in implementing these strategies and contribute to evidence based theory in the field. Combining the drive to develop creative solutions that have a deep impact on social equality with a love of learning Marianne has contributed to research of innovative, technology enhanced learning and teaching initiatives. Most recently her work on the set up and development of iScoil has been recognised as an exemplar of innovation in education as a Nominet Top 100 International Tech-For-Good project and a Google sponsored Social Innovation Fund THINKTECH award.

Darlene Christopher, CPLP, has designed and delivered virtual training programs for global audiences for over twelve years and authored a book, The Successful Virtual Classroom, on the subject. She is a Senior Knowledge & Learning Officer at the World Bank in Washington D.C. where she directs global learning programs and provides technical leadership on distance learning programs. Previously, Darlene held technology development and management positions at Disney Internet Group, 3Com and Nextel. Darlene’s international work experience includes consulting for the United Nations in Germany, teaching in Venezuela, and serving as a U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer in Belize.

Darlene speaks regularly at national and international conferences, sharing her passion for leveraging virtual classrooms to solve workplace learning needs. Myron Cizdyn is Founder of the eLearning Journeys Initiative, which seeks to advance eLearning in Europe and beyond; energize institutional, educational and business thought leaders to support and promote eLearning; and project standards-based educational values throughout all segments of society. The goal of eLJ is to implement programs in instructional design to encourage entrepreneurial initiatives in tool and curriculum development; and to explore the benefits of standards-based learning in all segments.

Larry Cooperman, M.A.Ed., is the Associate Dean for Open Education at the University of California, Irvine. He is a former president of the Open Education Consortium, which comprises 300 universities, colleges, educational institutions and associated organizations. Since 2011, he has served on the board of directors of the African Virtual University, whose degree tracks in secondary math and science education and computer science are delivered in partnership with 35 universities across Africa. In partnership with the Chemistry Department at UCI, Cooperman developed the OpenChem project. Today, this project is working in collaboration with the three public university systems in California to make OpenChem available to students and faculty throughout the state and the world.

He is a frequent keynote speaker at international conferences on the future of higher education and distance and open education, including invited talks at TedX Medellin (2011), SXSW.EDU (2012), the Brazilian Association for Distance Education (ABED) (2013),  the Asahi Shinbum conference of the future of higher education (2014), and at two European MOOC conferences (HOME 2014, EMMA/JTEL 2015). I am the chief executive of the Association for Learning Technology(ALT) and I work as a Learning Technologist and Anthropologist. I am an Open Practitioner with a special interest in leadership, equality and open education.

My work for ALT focuses on increasing the impact of Learning Technology for the wider community, strengthening recognition and representation for the Membership at a national level and leading professionalisation for individual Learning Technology professionals in a broad range of roles.

As a trained sculptor I can carve marble, but nowadays I focus on bringing about change through policy, community engagement and open governance.  Whilst much of my work is in the UK, I am bilingual in English/German and I use my other language skills to keep up with developments in education and technology across the globe and beyond the English speaking nations.

Prof. Dr. Paloma Díaz is Full Professor at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering of Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. With a Degree and PhD in Computer Science and Engineering from Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, she is involved in interdisciplinary research at the Interactive Systems research group (DEI LAB www.dei.inf.uc3m.es), the Institute of Culture and Technology and the Mixed Institute UC3M-BS of Financial Big Data. Since 1996 she leads the DEI LAB research group that is focused on the design and development of interactive systems, data visualizations and collaborative systems applied to different domains, including learning and simulation, crisis informatics and digital cultural heritage.

Dr. Díaz has led national and international research projects about the application of interactive technologies for the design practice, the use of ICT for learning and training, crisis management, civic participation or the operation of electrical smart grids. Her last projects are related with smart spaces for informal learning and civic engagement and the use of affordable virtual and augmented reality in different settings. Stephen Downes works for the National Research Council of Canada where he has served as a Senior Researcher, based in Moncton, New Brunswick, since 2001. Affiliated with the Learning and Collaborative Technologies Group, Institute for Information Technology, Downes specializes in the fields of online learning, new media, pedagogy and philosophy.

Downes is perhaps best known for his daily newsletter, OLDaily, which is distributed by web, email and RSS to thousands of subscribers around the world, and as the originator of the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC). He is a popular speaker, appearing at hundreds of events around the world over the last fifteen years. He has published hundreds of articles both online and in print through two decades of research and development into learning networks and related technologies.

Prior to joining the NRC, Downes worked for the University of Alberta as an information architect, and prior to that, as a distance education and new media design specialist for Assiniboine Community College in Brandon, Manitoba. This followed a decade of teaching experience both in person and by distance with Athabasca University, the University of Alberta, and Grande Prairie regional college. 

At the University of Alberta he built a learning and research portal for the municipal sector in that province, Munimall, and another for the Engineering and Geology sector, PEGGAsus. He also pioneered the development of learning objects and was one of the first adopters and developers of RSS content syndication in education. Downes introduced the concept of e-learning 2.0 and with George Siemens developed and defined the concept of Connectivism, using the social network approach to deliver open online courses to three thousand participants over two years. 

Downes obtained a BA and MA in philosophy from the University of Calgary, specializing in epistemology and the philosophy of science. He also studied at the PhD level at the University of Alberta, completing all but his dissertation. Among numerous volunteer and committee positions while a student, Downes served as editor of the Calgary student newspaper, the Gauntlet, for two terms, and as president of the Graduate Students' Association at the University of Alberta, also for two terms. He served as a member of the Board of Governors, University of Alberta, and with the Athabasca University Governing Council.

After completing high school at Ottawa's School of Continuing Education while working as a concession stand worker and dishwasher, Downes studied computing science for one year at Algonquin College while working as a telephone equipment installer and (later) as a security guard. He worked for a year as a computer operator for Texas Instruments in Calgary, then as a pot washer, 7-Eleven clerk, and development education programmer for the Arusha International Development Centre. Downes has also been a newspaper carrier, waiter at a race track, hot dog vendor, building cleaner and camp counsellor. He was a candidate for mayor in the city of Brandon in 1995.

Downes was born in Montreal, Quebec, in 1959 and has four brothers (all younger). He lives in Moncton, New Brunswick, with his wife Andrea (b. Colorado Springs, Colorado; married 1998) and four cats (Bart, Polly, Lexi and Alex).

Stephen reads a lot of science fiction and books in general. He enjoys movies, television and sports, especially hockey. He enjoys playing darts and NTN Trivia (though since Moncton has no NTN locations, it's a lot harder to play). He is an avid Civilization III player and an enthusiastic photographer.

I’m a social scientist, but my experiments take the form of games, participatory performances, and software. So I don’t just do science—I design games and group activities, create performances, and publish code.

I study how social environments shape our agency and our relationships, and how our worldviews and values limit what we can design. I've created a little nonprofit that supports this work.

The fields I work in are the theory of reasons for action, the field of human computer interaction, and real world game design as a kind of experimental sociology. One of my abiding research questions: Why does the market fail to address people's deepest desires? How can we re-orient the economy towards what we really want?

My strongest influences are David Velleman, Ruth Chang, Amartya Sen, Augusto Boal, and Bret Victor. My closest collaborators include Albert Kong, Rob Ochshorn, and Tristan Harris.

My passion is education and my life is teaching and learning, learning and teaching. I spend my days with interesting people who have an interest in people. Scientists, academics, designers, artists, ethicists, algoritmists, inventors, architects...And we talk about the Future of Work.

I'm on the winning human side. Which doesn't mean I don't appreciate the value of technology; but I am confident it will find its way. People, humans, us, we...well that's up for debate. So myself and a global, diverse group of fabulous humans have created a faculty that offers scaffolding from today to tomorrow. Mr. El-Sobky is currently withholding the role as Vice President for ICT Markets Development at the Information Technology Industry Development Agency "ITIDA", which is the implementing arm of Egyptian Ministry of Communication and Information Technology. In his capacity, El-Sobky entails the responsibility of managing all ICT related sectors with respect to markets development in said perspective. In addition to his vast experience of over 30 years in fields related to Information Technology, El-Sobky simultaneously undertakes the role as the general trustee of the Supreme Council for Cyber Security.

Concurrently El Sobky is Chairman of “Silicon Waha”, a joint stock company responsible for establishment of the nationally dispersed six new Technology Parks in Egypt, in which two of them have been inaugurated as of December 2016.

He worked as the Director of Strategic Projects at the Ministry of Investment and participated in managing a number of e-government projects implemented under the umbrella of the Ministry of State for Administrative Development "MSAD".

On the regional level, and as a member of the Arab Workforce Group preparing the WSIS 1^st. phase he participated in formulating the document "Towards a Pan Arab Information Society - A Joint Action Plan". In addition, he participated in the drafting committee of the "High Level Arab Conference" to prepare for the first phase of the WSIS which was held in Cairo in June 2003. Also, he participated in reviewing a regional document called:  "Towards Activating the Geneva Plan of Action: A Regional Vision to Promote and Develop the Information Society in the Arab Region" which was submitted in the second phase of the WSIS held in Tunis.

In 2014, he led a national workgroup of  multi-stakeholders experts (governmental, private, and NGOs) -under the umbrella of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology- to prepare the national strategic plan of ICT in Egypt. Also, he is a member of a national workgroup of multi-stakeholders experts to develop the eLearning in Egypt.

He also led a national workgroup -under the umbrella of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology- to issue "Egypt ICT Golden Book" which shows the projects undertaken by different Egyptian stakeholders in the field of "Information for Development - ICT4D" as one of Egypt's efforts in the implementation and follow-up of the WSIS two phases, Geneva and Tunis.

Dr Harold Elletson is an International Communications Consultant and Senior Fellow of the Institute for Statecraft.

He is a founding director of the Africa Forum on Business, Investment and Security, a member of the steering committee of OEB, a member of the Organising Committee of eLearning Africa and a consultant to ICWE GmbH. He is also the editor of The eLearning Africa Report.

Dr Elletson was previously Director of the NATO Forum on Business and Security, which he created with support from the NATO Science Programme.

A former Member of the United Kingdom Parliament (from 1992-1997), he served as Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland in the early stages of the peace process and was also a member of the Select Committee on Environmental affairs. He served as a member of the Lancashire Education Authority (the Education Committee of Lancashire County Council) before being elected to Parliament where he represented the interests of schools and colleges in his constituency in discussions with Ministers and on the floor of the House of Commons. He is a Fellow of the Armed Forces Parliamentary Scheme and of the Industry and Parliament Trust.

As a communications and public affairs specialist, he has advised many leading companies on aspects of their business in challenging markets, including BP in Azerbaijan and Alstom in Siberia. He has written widely on political and historical subjects and his first book, The General Against the Kremlin, that was published by Little Brown. His journalism has been published in a variety of newspapers and magazines. Dr Elletson holds a PhD in Social Sciences from the University of Bradford. 

Mark Endean is Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics at the UK Open University (OU). He is also Chair of the Open and Distance Learning Quality Council (ODLQC) an accrediting body for online and distance learning providers in the UK’s private sector.

His background is in materials processing, manufacturing technologies and manufacturing systems. In addition to his OU lectureship, he has previously held posts as Director of Engineering and Associate Dean of his faculty.

Mark has been a member of and has led teams developing learning materials for distance learning students for over thirty years. These have ranged from first year undergraduates to final year postgraduates. His courses have included traditional distance learning approaches, remote team working, and face-to-face residential schools. His latest teaching project was to redesign a taught postgraduate course for entirely online presentation.

Mark is a regular participant in quality assurance activities within the OU and beyond. He has held examining positions at various institutions and has taken part in formal quality reviews at universities in the UK, Germany and the Caribbean. He also supports engineering groups at partner institutions through staff development and advice on teaching and learning issues.

I'm a primary school teacher, originally from Kent, United Kingdom and now residing in Luxembourg City, Luxembourg.

I originally trained at the University of Roehampton, and graduated with first class honours in Primary Education in 2013. After that I taught for three years in a London school, before moving to Luxemourg in 2017 to teach in one of the European Schools, as part of the European School Network.

While in London I became the school coordinator for Computing, and that developed an interest of mine to bring digital solutions to aid both teachers and children in the classroom. After a year in this role, I presented my findings at the 2017 BETT Show in London, and am looking forward to being part of the Digital Badges Panel in Berlin this December!

I am María Gómez-Espinosa and I have been working in e-learning in educational environments and training since 2000.

Degree in Mathematics, I am currently doing a PhD in Educational Sciences, researching on academic honesty and evaluation in Higher Education.

Throughout these years, I have participated and coordinated different projects, among which we can highlight:

• "Educared and Campusred": A project for "Telefónica Foundation". The main goal in this project is the integration of the "Blended Learning" in Spanish universities and High School centers, training and accompanying teachers in this process.
• Analysis and implementation of LMS platforms for online teaching: Moodle, Canvas, Sakai or BlackBoard, are some of the platforms that over the years we have been using and analyzing in the search for the most innovative resources and tools.
• Design and editing of digital content: The change of printed material to the digital environment implies a change not only in format, but also in methodology. In this stage, we have tried to incorporate new formats and distribution systems.

Currently, I combine my work as a teacher in the Faculty of Education, in the Degree of Primary Education and the Master of Mathematics Didactics in Early Childhood and Primary Education, with advisory and research work in the area of ​​Internet Teaching of UNIR, the Online University.

The search for new methodologies, resources and tools that enrich our didactics and take the best advantage of online training are the department's work lines. We are in constant communication with the different members of the educational community, in order to find and analyze the new environment both Secondary and University Education. There are four aspects on which we are currently working:

1. Enhanced learning contents.
2. Best practices in Teaching.
3. Tutoring and support.
4. Assessment models and implementation.

In 2016 Nik Gowing co-authored interim findings of the “Thinking the Unthinkable” study. The work is currently scaling up because of global anxieties about the new pressures on leaderships. It is based on hundreds of top level confidential interviews and conversations with corporate and public service leaders, plus hundreds more conversations with the new generation of millennials. Findings so far reveal candidly why so many leaders face new difficulties identifying what looms in the disruptions of the “new normal” that have emerged since 2014. New vulnerabilioties are confirmed. The findings are scary.

Nik Gowing was a main news presenter for the BBC’s international 24-hour news channel BBC World News 1996-2014. He presented The Hub with Nik Gowing, BBC World Debates, Dateline London , plus location coverage of major global stories.

For 18 years he worked at ITN where he was bureau chief in Rome and Warsaw, and Diplomatic Editor for Channel Four News (1988-1996). He has been a member of the councils of Chatham House (1998–2004), the Royal United Services Institute (2005–present), and the Overseas Development Institute (2007-2014), the board of the Westminster Foundation for Democracy including vice chair (1996-2005), and the advisory council at Wilton Park (1998-2012 ). In 1994 he was a fellow at the Joan Shorenstein Barone Center in the J. F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University.  He is a board member for the Hay Literature Festival.

His peer-reviewed study at Oxford University “Skyful of Lies and Black Swans” predicted and identified the new vulnerability, fragility and brittleness of institutional power in the new all-pervasive public information space. The work builds on his work initiated at Harvard.

In 2014 Nik was appointed a Visiting Professor at Kings College, London in the School of Social Science and Public Policy. Since 2016 he has been a Visiting Professor at Nanyang University (NTU), Singapore focussing on deepening and widening the “Thinking the Unthinkable” research. From 2014 he was a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on Geo-Economics.

He was awarded Honorary Doctorates by Exeter University in 2012 and Bristol University in 2015. They recognise his ongoing cutting edge analyses and distinguished career in international journalism.

Eric Hamilton is a professor of education at Pepperdine University, with courtesy appointment in mathematics.  He specializes in research around creation and use of interactive digital media.  His main current work involves leading a research effort with sites in the US, Finland, Namibia, Kenya, Mexico, and India, connecting adolescents in a virtual digital makerspace to study participatory teaching and international collaboration. 

Hamilton recently led a major initiative of US and Finnish governments in education innovation and technology, and he recently completed a Fulbright Research Fellowship in Namibia.  Originally tenured in computer science and mathematics at Loyola Chicago, he led an award-winning citywide consortium to promote underrepresented minorities in STEM professions.  He served as division director at the US National Science Foundation, and research center director at the US Air Force Academy.  Hamilton studied at Northwestern and the University of Chicago.

Martin Hawksey is Chief Innovation, Community and Technology Officer for the Association for Learning Technology. Martin's career began as a learning technologist in the UK Higher Education sector and has gone on to hold advisory roles within the educational technology sector for a number of UK government funded services. In these roles, he has supported staff in the exploration and adoption of innovative approaches to learning and teaching.

As part of his role Martin is responsible community strategy implementing a number of initiatives including the development of the ALT Members #altc Twitter hashtag. Since 2014 this has been promoted as the primary tag for sharing ALT activities as well as becoming the official ALT Annual Conference hashtag. Harry Haynes is an experienced content developer for acclaimed digital-first English Learning projects aimed at diverse groups of learners.

He worked as editor of BBC Media Action’s multi-platform English learning project in Bangladesh, BBC Janala, and produced the multi-media learning pack for BBC Learning English’s award-winning English My Way Learning Circles project aimed at isolated immigrant communities in the UK.

Now based in Cairo, Harry is currently project-managing HOPES for the British Council, an EU-funded programme to help Syrians into Higher Education via blended English courses in Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey. Olivier Heidmann is lead developer and designer in serious games projects, responsible for designing and creating virtual experiment demonstrators. He has a Master Degree in Parallel Computing from the Louis Pasteur University of Strasbourg, France. He also taught computer science, mathematics and management to students ranging from 14 years old to adults for 7 years. Lauren Herckis is an anthropologist at Carnegie Mellon University with appointments in the Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Human-Computer Interaction Institute in the School of Computer science. She specializes in faculty culture and the use of technology in higher education, and her field research applies anthropological and archaeological methods and theory to analyze human engagement with the material world. Dr. Herckis is interested in learning science, human diversity (especially in urban contexts), the pedagogical training of future faculty, the politics of praxis in fieldwork, chaîne opératoire, and political economy in urban growth. Her research in Latin America interrogates assumptions about cultural heterogeneity in the context of long-term urban growth, and highlights the ways that social networks dynamically impact technical choices and the development of informal economies. Under the aegis of Carnegie Mellon's Simon Initiative, Dr. Herckis' current projects explore the intersection of campus culture, technological change, and effective teaching at the college level. Her research informs policymaking, shapes the development of learning technologies, and illuminates aspects of organizational culture and policy which affect teaching practice.

Dr. Herckis has spent her career working in quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods research design and execution, in public, private, and non-profit contexts, and across a variety of disciplinary domains. A former Fulbright fellow, Dr. Herckis worked with the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research, the Center for Health Equity Research and Promotion at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and the University of Pittsburgh's Center for Instructional Development and Distance Education before joining the faculty at Carnegie Mellon University.

Dr. Niels-Peder Osmundsen Hjøllund, assistant professor at the University College of Copenhagen

In his work, he researches the role of pedagogues and pedagogy in schools. He has taught media & digital culture and pedagogical theory. He holds a PhD in information studies from the University of Copenhagen, where his thesis "Subject position and Information Literacy - a reinstallation of the subject" discussed information literacy and cases of prohibitional versus laissez faire use of social media in Danish high school.

Dr. Hjøllund has done research within digitization of children, youth, and education as well as notions of identity and how the 21st century can and do restructure both the individual and the social sphere.

He is member of the board in the research network BIN - Barnekultur i Norden (Children's culture in the Nordic countries). He is also a member of the Danish Society for Theoretical Psychoanalysis.

Annett Irmer started her professional career as learning technology consultant at IMC AG in 2000 after studying European Finance and Accounting and a Master Program in European Human Resource Management.

In this role, she supported global organisations in the design and implementation of learning technology strategies. A key focus was the implementation and rollout of learning management systems. She was also responsible for setting up a subsidiary of IMC in Paris, France.

After seven years as a consultant, Annett changed to E.ON and took over the role as “Program Manager e-Learning” at the E.ON Academy, the corporate university of E.ON.  During her time at E.ON, Annett took on different roles and project responsibilities within Learning & Development such as the implementation of a Group-wide learning controlling framework, learning process management as well as the efficiency project for learning in the context of the program E.ON 2.0.

Peter Isackson has worked in France for over 30 years as a consultant, trainer, coach and trainer of trainers. A prolific author, producer and publisher of a wide range of multimedia and e-learning products, he has acquired a reputation as a pioneer in the use of new technology in training, collaborating with multiple publishers in Europe and the US. He has authored programs on sales techniques, foreign languages, intercultural skills, team management and sustainable development. 

He is the founder and Chief Visionary Officer of SkillScaper, proposing next generation authoring tools, methods and content for learning in a Web 2.0 context. 

Since 2015 he has collaborated on educational projects launched by the crowd-sourced online journal, Fair Observer, contributed numerous articles on culture, politics and education and is a member of the Fair Advisory Committee. He is the creator and writer of a daily feature, the Daily Devil's Dictionary.

Peter is currently spearheading the launch of Fair Observer Education, a European NGO which links various initiatives in the field of education with the journalistic innovations of Fair Observer.

Marieta Jansen van Vuuren is a former teacher from South Africa who majored in languages and started her teaching career in 1984. .  She holds a doctorate in Sociolinguistics - Afrikaans - with the focus on Language and Internet-based Electronic Communication using Corpus Linguistics as a research method.  In 2000 she joined the Vaal University of Technology in Vanderbijlpark Gauteng, lecturing English and Communication studies. In 2004 she joined the North-West University – School of Languages - where she lectured Sociolinguistics to undergraduate students. Marieta was subsequently appointed in the School of Educational Sciences in 2008 where she lectured language teaching (Afrikaans) to education students and provided supervision to Honours, Masters and PhD students.

In 2012 she was appointed at the Academic Development and Support Unit of the NWU – Vaal Triangle Campus, responsible for the implementation of elearning projects and innovation and technology integration. Her current position is that of Senior Academic Developer with the focus on the support for academics with the successful integration of technologies into teaching and learning as well as the coordination of training for continuing professional development of academics for the focus area Teaching Learning Environments.

Current fields of interest and research and publications include topics such as transforming education in a blended learning environment, eLearning and mobile learning development and the integration of video in Education. Research on curriculum redesign and implementation thereof for blended learning environments and the development of online learning modules as well as the integration of video as assessment tool are research projects she has currently being involved with. Marieta has been the project leader for the successful implementation of the first One Button Studios undertaken by her team at the North-West University Vaal campus in South Africa. This implementation was the first of its kind on the African continent.

Karin Johnstone is a Learning Development tutor based at the University of Northampton. Karin’s primary role is helping students to improve their academic skills. Dr. Ari Jonsson is the president of Reykjavik University; a private non-profit university in Iceland that focuses on education, research and industry collaboration in the areas of technology, business and law. 

Dr. Jonsson completed his doctoral degree in Computer Science from Stanford University in 1997, with focus on artificial intelligence and autonomous decision- making. He then joined NASA as a research scientist, working on the development of automated technology to improve the efficiency and reliability of spacecraft operations. During his tenure at NASA, he managed a number of research and development projects, contributing to missions such as the Deep Space One experimental spacecraft, the Mars exploration rovers Spirit and Opportunity, and the operations of the International Space Station. 

In 2007, Dr. Jonsson moved to Reykjavik University as the Dean of the School of Computer Science. In January 2010, he became the President of the university and has served in that role since then. Dr. Jonsson is active in policy development and has served for over seven years on the Icelandic Science and Technology Policy Council.

The matchED-Team

Sarah Zühlke, Pauline Karstens, Emma Karstens, Chantal Pasternack and Shante Pasternack are students at the Richard-Hallmann-School in Trappenkamp and are visting the socio-scientific and economic profiles in the 12th grade.                                                                                                                                             

Together they decided to join the national school-competition "Young Economic Summit" (shortly YES!). This competition opens doors and sets a stage for new and creative ideas of the next generation. High School students concern themselves with global problems in the realm of economy, policy, society and environment. They aim to find innovative solutions in order to create the world, the youth wants to live in.

In this context the students from the Richard-Hallmann-School dealed with the topic "skills for the new digital age" and developed their idea of a web-based platform under the name "matchED"- Matching Education and Digitalization. MatchED combines a web-based learning module for students with detailed qualification profiles of employers. In that way, the lack of digital competences can be decreased as graduates can gain qualification matching their aspired career.

Sheetal is a Medical biologist graduated from Brunel University. Since graduating she has worked at St George’s University of London for the Times Higher Award winning eLearning Unit.

She started her career as a Learning Technologist and has worked to become the eProjects Manager within the unit. Sheetal’s main focus of work has been on the use of virtual scenarios for teaching and training. She worked on the developments of virtual scenarios in virtual worlds such as Second Life, delivering virtual scenarios on mobiles, implementing virtual scenarios within the medical curriculum for small and large group teaching sessions and for self-directed learning exercises.

Sheetal has worked on a number of international projects, funded by The European Commission under the Erasmus+ program and is currently the project manager for the WAVES project. The project is taking all the lessons learnt from authoring and delivering virtual scenarios to make them more accessible to the wider teaching and training community and build a network of virtual scenario authors, users and learners.

Sheetal has led on a number of training and teaching workshops internationally to teach others to create and use virtual scenarios in their own organisations.

Jim Kiggens is the Director, Engaged Learning Technologies at Adtalem Global Education.  He leads the game production team that develops and supports game-based learning for Adtalem Global Education institutions.  

Jim has over 25 years of experience in producing and developing game-based learning for higher education, middle and secondary school, and corporate training.  In addition to shipping 29 Serious Games titles and founding two game studio companies, Jim has also over 22 years of experience in instructional design, product development, and teaching digital animation and game development at several colleges and universities.

Prior to joining Adtalem Global Education, Jim held the post as the Associate Director for Digital Game-Based Learning, Center for Technological Literacy, Hofstra University.  He was the founding director of the Serious Game Design Institute and the Project Director for the Mobile Media Institute NSF (ATE) project at Santa Barbara City College. Benjamin Knoke holds a Masters degree in Production Engineering and Industrial Management at the University of Bremen. He works as Scientific Researcher at BIBA in the department of “Applied Information and Communication Technology” (IKAP) with human-machine interface (HMI) technologies and training simulators for production processes as focal area of research. Thierry Koscielniak is Vice Chief Digital Officer at @LeCnam Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers in Paris, France.

Nives Kreuh is a Head of e-learning at the National Education Institute in Slovenia. She is doing the national research, strategy planning and implementation of new curricula through teacher continuous professional development in the field of digital pedagogy and e-learning. She holds a B.A. in Slovene and English language and literature, a M.Sc. in English language and didactics. 

She was leading the national E-competent teacher project in which they designed the standard of e-competent teacher, principle and ICT coordinators in schools framework called The Way towards E-competency. She focused on designing key e-competencies and developing the efficient training model called The Way towards E-competency, leading the instructional design and online courses (MOOCs) development for in-service teacher training and professional development to raise pedagogical digital literacy in schools nationwide.

She is the Head of Programme and Organising Committe of the international SIRikt* conference (*Enabling Education and Research with ICT), which is the largest educational conference in Slovenia with around 1000 delegates each year.

Dr Lamarche been passionately involved with the profession of nursing in one form or another for her entire professional career. Currently, she is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Heath Discipline with Athabasca Unversity, Canada's Online University and practices clinical one day a week in a First Nations community as a Nurse Practitioner. She is involved on various levels with local, provincial, and national nurse practitioner issues, committees and organizations. She has been president of the College of Registered Nurses Association of Nova Scotia (regulatory body), member of the board of directors of the Canadian Nurses Association (national advocacy/regulatory body), and president of the Canadian Association of Advance Practice Nurses (national advocacy). She currently am part of the Core Steering Group for the International Council of Nurses.

Dr.David Lenihan is one of the leading minds in medical education. He has been tasked with creating the world’s leading health sciences learning environment, one which not only results in unprecedented student outcomes but is, in addition, based on an interprofessional model, and deployed at an international scale.

Dr. Lenihan has done this before, most recently as Dean at Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine (NY), where he changed the way medical education is taught: by first “flipping” the classroom (faculty deliver lectures via iTunes and then moderate class discussions), then developing a dynamically adaptive curriculum that changes for each student based on individual knowledge and ability and, finally, by linking the curriculum with real-time, systemic assessment of both students and faculty.

Minute-by-minute monitoring of students’ knowledge enables the school to both improve student outcomes at the same time as reduce “drop out” rates by getting targeted help to students early and often.

Previously, Dr. Lenihan founded a system of outpatient clinics in the UK, which he sold. Dr. Lenihan holds a Ph.D. in Peripheral Neurosurgery/Neuroscience from the University of Edinburgh, was a peripheral nerve surgical fellow at Edinburgh, a Doctor of Chiropractic from Palmer University, and Juris Doctor from Touro University. Rafał Lew-Starowicz is a deputy director at the Ministry of National Education in Poland, coordinates the educational policy of innovation in Poland. Graduated from the Faculty of Journalism and Political Science, the University of Warsaw and a PhD (ABD) at the Institute for Media Education, Faculty
of Educational Sciences, at the University of Special Education.

As an employee of the Educational Research Institute, he participated in the evaluation of the “Digital School” Government Programme. Esko Lius is known for inspiring learning projects which put emphasis on learners' own activity, transformative pedagogy, and versatile tools for authentic learning. Mobile learning and BYOx model are most often employed.

He is involved in designing strategies and systems for building up the capacities of the teaching staff, and he facilitates digital strategy processes of the management – both in Finland and in international projects, e.g. in Kosovo and Egypt.

Jeff Merriman is the Associate Director of MIT's Office of Educational Innovation and Technology where he leads activities to help enhance teaching and learning at the Institute through new and innovative uses of information technology.  His group is currently focused on the development of content and software services that can be utilized for educational application across disciplines. Jeff has spent much of his career building and promoting various kind of educational technology infrastructure for higher education.  As Director of Residential Computing at Stanford University he brought the notion of “wired campuses” into the forefront by networking all of Stanford’s graduate and undergraduate residence halls, leading an aggressive effort that began in 1987.  In 1998 he helped to form Stanford’s Academic Computing program and became Director of Academic Computing Technology.  In this role he began to widen his focus to include issues of software infrastructure in support of educational initiatives.

Sabine Moebs is a professor in Business Information Systems and International Business at the Cooperative State University Baden Wuerttemberg, Germany. This includes coordination of European and national research projects in the areas of digital learning, OER, the future of learning and user experience in the context of engineering and computing. Her special interest is EU-Africa research collaboration in those areas. She holds a PhD from Dublin City University.

She has been working as a researcher in software engineering and as head of marketing and product development in several small IT companies in Germany, Switzerland and Spain. As freelance project manager for regional development projects she has worked with project partners in Latvia, Poland, Sweden and the US. She is an experienced consultant, moderator and project manager in such diverse areas as regional development, business development in SMEs, learning technologies and in the area of user experience and accessibility.

I work for the Learning Innovation department at IE Business School. There, I have had the opportunity to use my knowledge, from working as both, an Instructional Designer and a Professor, to guide the institution in implementing and creating innovative technology to drive their educational plan. Hoda Mostafa is currently as Associate Professor of Practice and Associate Director at the Center for Learning and Teaching, American University in Cairo.  She teaches freshman within a multi-section course, Scientific Thinking and has also designed  and developed a course on Creativity and Creative Problem Solving, exploring design thinking and educational game design with her students. She has also participated in the planning, design and implementation of a new Freshman Program in 2013 and continues to work on foundational teaching and learning at AUC.

Amber Muenzenberger, Director of Learning at Triseum.  Amber has over 11 years of experience of working with administration and faculty to adopt innovative teaching and distance education methodologies. In her current role, she works collaboratively with a game design team to infuse educational pedagogy and research into serious games.  As part of her job she works with a global network of teachers and faculty to implement the Triseum suite of games in the classroom and conduct research game-based learning. She has presented over 50 presentations, papers and workshops at international conferences. Amber is also the president for the Texas Distance Learning Association, that largest state association in the United States Distance Learning Association.

Anthony Newman is the Senior Manager of Business Development for the Office of Vice President of Information Technology at Purdue University. In this role, Anthony is responsible for commercializing and scaling cutting edge technologies created by Purdue's IT Organization.

Formerly, Anthony led the Purdue Studio team where he was responsible for leading a creative team of developers and designers and students in the identification, development and delivery of digital applications based on customer needs, strategic vision and market research. Steven Ney completed his doctorate in the policy sciences at the Department of Comparative Politics in the University of Bergen. Trained as a policy analyst at the University of London, Steven Ney has worked on a wide range of policy issues in a number of research institutes including the LOS Center in Bergen, ICCR in Vienna and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis in Laxenburg. After spending four years from 2005 as an Assistant Professor of Political Science at Singapore Management University, Steven Ney took up the Chair of Social Entrepreneurship at Jacobs University, Bremen in August 2009. Starting as a researcher of environmental issues, particularly climate change, Steven Ney has developed an interest in analysing the way societies deal with complex and uncertain policy challenges. Recently, Steven Ney has concentrated on social innovation and social entrepreneurship as a means of bringing about institutional change.

Since November 2014, Steven Ney is a D-Fellow at the HPI School of Design Thinking in Potsdam. Apart from developing the international relations of the HPI School of Design Thinking, he is currently designing and implementing a certification process for D-Thinking Coaches.

Marit Nieuwenhuys (MSc) has worked as an educational advisor at Risbo - Erasmus University Rotterdam since 2011. As an advisor, she has been involved regularly in the (re)development of courses and curricula, particularly in the introduction of active learning formats, such as problem based learning, but also in the development of blended and online education (including MOOCs). Another area of Marit's expertise is (digital/online) assessment. Marit delivers a variety of training courses and workshops for teachers. Liz Norton is the founder and director of Stone Soup Films, an innovative nonprofit that produces and donates short form documentaries to worthy organizations. The organization has completed over 100 films since it was founded in 2008, not including this feature documentary on education reform. Before founding Stone Soup Films, Liz was a freelance television producer for over ten years, with a focus on public policy issues. Those programs included several Fred Friendly Seminars for Public Television and MTV News. During the Clinton Administration, she was a staffer in the White House Office of Communications. In that role, she served as a link between the president, the press and the public, primarily on the issues involving crime and drug policy. Andrew Nye is Assistant Director Digital & New Products at Cambridge English Language Assessment, where he has been working for the past 10 years, focusing much of his time on the areas of digital learning, product development and teacher professional development. He has extensive experience of training and supporting teachers, and of English Language Teaching more broadly, having worked for 12 years in senior management language education roles around the world.

Kjartan Ólafsson (1958) graduated in 1984 from the Reykjavík College of Music with a Bachelor of Music degree in composition. He continued his studiesin Holland at the Institute of Sonology and later at the Sibelius Academy in Finland. Kjartan received his Licentia doctorand (PhD) from the Sibelius Academy in 1995.

Since 1988, Kjartan has been developing a composing system based on Artificial Intelligence technique called CALMUS (Calculated Music), which is a computer program especially designed for music composition.

Among works composed by Kjartan are pieces for solo instruments, chamber ensembles, electronic music, orchestral works, concertos and music for various theatre productions. His Viola Concerto received the Icelandic Music Award in 2002 as the composition of the year. 

From 2005- 2014 Kjartan was Professor of Composition and Theory at the Iceland Academy of the Arts. Now he is the CEO and head of research at ErkiTónlist sf and teacher at the University of Iceland.

Annette Peet (1964) is an experienced project and program manager at SURF. SURF is the collaborative ICT organization for Dutch higher education and research. It offers students, lecturers and scientists in the Netherlands access to the best possible internet and ICT facilities.

Annette graduated as Master of Science at Utrecht University. Since then she has worked as senior consultant and project manager for several consultancy agencies, the Ministry of Transport, Utrecht University and SURF. Her focus has always been on accelerating adoption of (IT) innovation within institutions and facilitating collaboration between parties involved.

The last 15 years she has been working in the field of higher education. Since 2012, she has become completely at home in the subject of digital assessment and e-learning as manager of various projects and programs on a national level. Dr Neil Peirce is a Research Fellow and Technology Lead at the Learnovate Centre, hosted at Trinity College Dublin. Educated at Trinity College Dublin he holds a PhD in Personalised Educational Games, a MSc. in Multimedia Systems, and a B.A. (Mod) in Computer Science.

As a Technology Lead at Learnovate he has implemented projects in the areas of web-based personalised learning, game-based learning, learning analytics, analytics visualisation, and API design and usability. These projects have addressed learners in early childhood, schools, and corporate learning settings. He has extensive experience in software development including web development, game development, expert systems, service oriented architectures, and API design and usability. Neil is a committee member of the ECGBL and has published in international conferences including ICALT, ECTEL, ECGBL, HCI International and DIGITEL.

Neil currently coordinates the DEVELOP (H2020) project. He is also an expert reviewer for EC projects in technology enhanced learning, and has worked on research projects including ELEKTRA (FP6) and the Centre for Next Generation Localisation (SFI).

Dr. Antoni Perez-Navarro has a phD in Physics for the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona(UAB) since 2000. He got his bachelor in physics, also from UAB, in 1995.
He currently holds the position Deputy Director of Research at eLearn Center at Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) and is lecturer in the Computer Science, Multimedia and Telecommunication department (EIMT department), since 2005. His association with the university dates from 2002, starting as a teaching consultant. Between the years 2010 and 2014, he has been the academic director of the postgraduate of Geographic Information Systems (at UOC), and between 2011 and 2014 he has been postgraduate coordinator of his department. Nowadays is the director of the Technological Observatory of the EIMT department and director of the technical collection of books of editorial Ediuoc.

Apart from his activities at UOC, he works, since the year 2007, at Escola Universitària Salesiana de Sarrià (EUSS), part of UAB, where he gives classes in Industrial Engineering grades. He has also collaborated with Cartographic and Geologic Institute of Catalonia (ICGC) in its International Course on Management and Applied Techniques in Cartography.

His teaching activities range from the fields of physics and GIS in telecommunication engineering, computer science, multimedia and industrial engineering. He has also written several teaching materials in these fields, and has created more that 100 teaching videos about these topics.

Before starting his career in academia, he has worked as a GIS professional between the years 2000 and 2005 in Aurensis, S.L.. That work includes project management and design of new GIS software.

His main research interests are indoor positioning and prevention of diseases via smartphones. Regarding education, he has several contributions in journals and congresses. His main contributions are mathematical notation in physics and mathematics in online environments; and the introduction of video as a learning tool in the virtual classroom, which received the Best Innovation Project Award at UOC in 2010 with the project Present@. Nowadays, the use of video as teaching material in STEM subjects is his main focus of research in education and he is supervising a doctoral work in this topic.

Jen Persson is the Director of defenddigitalme, a civil liberties group founded in 2015 to campaign for safe, fair, and transparent children’s data in education. She is an independent member of the Department for Education National Pupil Database Steering Group in England. Jan Peters is one of leading scientists working on the development of machine learning systems for robotics.

He is a full professor (W3) for Intelligent Autonomous Systems at the Computer Science Department of the Technische Universität Darmstadt and at the same time a senior research scientist and group leader at the Max-Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems, where he heads the interdepartmental Robot Learning Group. Jan Peters has received the Dick Volz Best 2007 US PhD Thesis Runner-Up Award, the Robotics: Science & Systems - Early Career Spotlight, the Young Investigator Award of the International Neural Networks Society, and the IEEE Robotics & Automation Society‘s Early Career Award as well as numerous best paper awards. Cristina Petracchi is heading the e-learning Center in the Capacity Development Unit in FAO, she manages and coordinates the design, development, delivery and language adaptations of e-learning courses, blended learning programmes and face-to-face training events, for the benefit of FAO member countries. Within the context of the position she holds, Ms Petracchi also consolidates partnerships with United Nations agencies, academic institutions and universities, regional organizations, CSOs and NGOs. In addition to a university degree in Biological Sciences, Ms Petracchi holds a PhD in Nutrition and Food Science, and has several years of experience of capacity development activities in India, Ethiopia, Nepal, Namibia, Senegal and Mali. After 40 years as an economist at the World Bank, including 15 years as Chief Economist of the International Finance Corporation, he saw too often how lack of management talent was impeding economic and social development in communities throughout the developing world. Florian Rampelt is Director of Education at Kiron Open Higher Education in Germany. After graduating in political science and education sciences, he was a research assistant in teacher education at the University of Passau. Dr. Herwig Rehatschek studied Computer Science and Electronics and received his M.Sc. and his Ph.D. from the University of Technology, Graz. From 1997 until 2008 he worked at the non-profit research company JOANNEUM RESEARCH. His main emphasis was on eLearning and digital media analysis. He participated in many international EC projects and also managed and co-ordinated some of them. In 1999 Dr. Rehatschek won the Austrian state price in the category learning, knowledge and culture. In 2008 he joined the Medical University of Graz (MUG) as a head of the section organization of teaching including the virtual medical campus, the eLearning platform of the university. Since then he was actively involved in the set-up and implementation of the LMS and the development of learning content. He introduced virtualized lessons, a new virtual microscope, eLectures, and non-linear story telling in medical education. Recently he works on the set-up of an automated lecture recording system. He actively participated in the development of an eLearning training program for teachers provided by all nine universities in the federal state of Styria. He won in 2012 the Dr. Michael Hasiba price for innovative teaching, in 2017 he won the Austrian state prize “Ars Docendi” for innovative teaching for the implementation of a non-linear story telling concept for education in first aid.

For over 25 years Martin Riemer has been involved in medical 3D-image processing research. This work resulted in a prototype of the subsequently published VOXEL-MAN 3D-Navigator anatomical interactive medical atlases; which helped to introduce 3D virtual body models, made from tomographic data, to medical teaching. In the development group he was mainly responsible for the prototype, the user interface and the MS-Windows implementation of the 3D-Navigator.
Since 2003 he has concentrated on teaching Medical Computer Science and helped groups setting up eLearning at the University Medical Centre Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) and the Hamburg Open Online University (HOOU).
His special interest is the creation and use of Virtual Patients. He has been awarded the “Hamburger Lehrpreis 2017“ for the Medical Faculty. Martin Romijn – Chief Information Security Officer at Eindhoven University of Technology.

Martin, with over 30 years of Information Technology experience in roles like Project Manager and Test Manager, specialized in Information Security in 2000. Since then he fulfilled the roles of IT Auditor, Security Consultant and Security Officer. His most recent certification specialized him in cloud computing security (ISC/CCSP).

I have a Bachelor degree in Computer Science Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC). As software developer he is also responsible for design, implementation and further development of SEB. Safe Exam Browser is an open source software application used to secure Windows and Mac OS computers in the context of online examinations. Alec W. Serlie is Research Director at GITP, one of the largest HRM-consultancy firms of the Netherlands. Franziska Trede is Associate Professor in Higher Education at Charles Sturt University where she leads research, scholarship and practice in professional education and workplace learning. She is a national board member of the Australian Collaborative Education Network. She teaches an open online subject to academics and practitioners on the theory and practice of workplace learning. Her research focuses on professional practice, learner agency and resilience, pedagogy of deliberateness, professional identity development and professionalism. She has developed innovative online capacity building teaching tools using arts-based approaches. Franziska published 7 books and over 80 peer-reviewed papers and has presented her work in Canada, Europe and New Zealand. Her latest book under contract with Springer is titled Education for practice in hybrid spaces: Enhancing professional learning with mobile technology.

Hariklia Tsalapatas is a software engineer at the University of Thessaly, Greece since 2000. She has a Diploma in Computer Engineering from the University of Patras, Greece (1990), an MSc Degree in Computer Science from Rice University, Houston, TX (1994), and an MBA from London Business School (2005). She has been working on ICT in education since 2000 focusing on combining technology with emerging learning methodologies including active, experiential, explorative, and collaborative learning. Over the past 6 years she has been active on serious games in education, mobile learning, and community-based learning. She has participated in 20 EU funded projects since 2000 several of which she has coordinated. She has published approximately 40 publications in the same timeframe. Earlier engagements inlcude working as a researcher at the Foundation for Research and Technology in Heraklion Crete (1998-2000) and as a network engineer for Oracle corporation, SF, California (1993-1997).

Dr Piet van der Zanden is an education expert with special focus on AV-IT issues in teaching and learning spaces. He has an instigating role in the design and development of education facilities and advises about audio-visual, pedagogical, ergonomic and technical issues and is involved in feasibility and usability studies. Piet has devised the four-quadrant pedagogy, which is facilitated by a quad signal presentation system combined with an interactive smartboard. He does training and evaluation and discusses pedagogical approaches that come within reach because of it. A challenge for the years to come are hybrid classrooms to bridge physical and virtual students in one and the same class and its related teaching skills. Significant topics are; connected collaborative practices, interactive live channels and streaming content over campus networks.

Elena Vilabrille Paz is a fashion designer that has focused her career as a teacher and academic coordinator in the online education. She is the head of eFashion, a tailor-made fashion course created by IED Madrid for INDITEX employees. Apart from leading the didactic department and being deeply involved in the instructional design and course production, she also coordinates the main action characters: the lectures, the students and the client-company.

Her experience in fashion image, working as a stylist and costume designer [Vogue, Citizen K, Instituto Cervantes, Madrid City Council, Telefónica,…] and creating and coordinating a face to face international One Year Fashion Communication course at IED Madrid, has given her the required knowledge to take on the challenge of online projects. IED Madrid is increasing its already existing online area and Elena Vilabrille is in charge of every fashion related course.

Santisa Viljoen is a Teaching Advancement at University (TAU) Fellow who holds a PhD in Musicology, an MA in English Literature (cum laude) and a Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching. She is a senior lecturer at the School of Music of the North-West University (NWU) in Potchefstroom, South Africa, where she teaches Applied Vocal Studies, voice pedagogy and choral conducting. She also supervises postgraduate students and is the director of the NWU Conservatory Choir.

Santisa has taught and presented master classes at the University of Jyväskylä in Finland, Maastricht Conservatory in the Netherlands and the Royal College of Music in Stockholm as part of lecturer exchange programmes. She participates in national and international conferences and has published in accredited journals. Work experience has always been a mix of psychology and IT, I like working in the area where these two interact. After graduating I lived and worked in the UK for 5 years. In addition to that I've also worked on long-term projects in Ireland (Dublin), the US, as well as instructional/curriculum design & facilitating workshops and (classroom) training all over Europe, the US, and India.

Projects included: evaluating e-learning on usability, introducing e-learning in an IT software & consultancy firm, introducing e-learning in an industrial area, designing/developing/project management of e-learning courses, and LMS system administration. Steve Vosloo is passionate about using technology in education, with a specialisation in  mobiles for literacy development. He has been head of mobile in the Innovation Lab, Pearson South Africa, led the mobile learning programme at UNESCO, held the prestigious fellowship for 21st Century Learning at the Shuttleworth Foundation, and is currently back at UNESCO to research how technology can better serve low-skilled users. In 2007 he was a research fellow at Stanford University where he studied youth and digital media. He holds a Masters degree in Information Systems from the University of Cape Town.

Toby Walsh is a leading researcher in Artificial Intelligence. He was recently named in the inaugural Knowledge Nation 100, the one hundred "rock stars" of Australia's digital revolution. He is Guest Professor at TU Berlin, Scientia Professor of Artificial Intelligence at UNSW and leads the Algorithmic Decision Theory group at Data61, Australia's Centre of Excellence for ICT Research. Dr. Charlotte Webb, is an artist, researcher and Chief Leopard of the Feminist Internet, a movement addressing gender equality, feminisms and the internet. Feminist Internet is part of UAL Futures, a University of the Arts London initiative inventing the futures of education by connecting students and industry partners, and enabling them to creatively respond to social issues they care about.

Her PhD, Noodle, Noodle, Cat: Extra-Subjective Agency in Web-based Art practice explored the complexities of artistic authorship under the production conditions of the web. She is Digital Learning Coordinator, University of the Arts London, and co-authored ‘Discovering the Post-Digital Art School’ with Professor Fred Deakin. I studied mechanical science at the technical university in Ilmenau, Germany. I finished university in November 2015 and started to work in February 2016 as a PhD student at the BMW Group in Munich. Since I started thinking, I liked the idea of human-computer interaction in order to make humans life faster and easier. Augmented Reality (AR) technologies became very popular in the recent years, not just due to the successful launch of the Microsoft HoloLens, so I decided to dig into that interesting field. I read 600+ scientific paper in less than one year and gave several talks about AR-based training systems on different conferences. Developing AR applications for industrial use cases are my main focus at this time. Additionally, I do extensive user-studies to get a deep understanding of shop-floor operator’s demands

David is Head of DigitalLearning at the University of the Arts London. He researches individuals’ motivation to engage online for learning using his ‘Visitors and Residents’ paradigm. This work has given him a good understanding of the changing nature of learning and the impact of the Web on the education sector. David has led national and international studies discovering exactly how people go about learning in the Web era and can often be found communicating his findings and thoughts via all means available including keynotes, blog-posts and videos.

Zac Woolfitt is a lecturer and researcher at Inholland University in The Netherlands. With a background in tourism where he worked in the US and Canada for ten years, he is now based near Amsterdam. Since 2010 he has been conducting research into the effective use of video in higher education. His master thesis examined the obstacles that teaching staff face when transitioning from face-to-face, to teaching via video (from 3d to 2d). Using a variety of technologies, he has recorded over 100 web lectures that are used when ‘flipping’ the classroom in a blended learning format. Dr Clive Young is the Digital Education Advisory Team Leader at University College London. The advisory team supports the adoption of the UCL learning and teaching and e-learning strategies across four Schools and numerous departments. Clive worked for many years in consultant, management, lecturer and developer roles, mainly at research-led universities including UCL, Imperial College London, University of St Andrews and UMIST, Manchester. He is currently an associate lecturer at the Open University on the MA in Online and Distance Education. He has instigated and led a range of institutional, national and international projects exploring the potential and practicalities of technological and organisational change. He speaks regularly at UK and European conferences and events and worked for several years as an expert external evaluator for the European Commission. Clive's current interests are institutional change models, media pedagogy and learning design.

Vincent Zimmer is a Co-Founder of Kiron Open Higher Education, a blended learning educational platform for refugees. He completed two master’s degree study programmes, “International Economics” at the Georg-August-University Göttingen and “Public Policy and Administration” at the London School of Economics. Vincent Zimmer has a lot of experience in the startup area, and has been already involved in several foundings. Furthermore he worked in a consultancy (Rambøll Management Consulting) and with students in crisis during his time at “Study without borders”. His experiences in the refugees area and a research stay in Istanbul, moved him to found Kiron together with Markus Kressler in 2015.

Since 1986 I am engaged in distance education and since 1992 in e-learning projects and e-learning training. Since 2001 Member of the board of Forum DistancE-Learning and chairman of the section for pedagogical and didactical issues in distance learning.
