In his work, he researches the role of pedagogues and pedagogy in schools. He has taught media & digital culture and pedagogical theory. He holds a PhD in information studies from the University of Copenhagen, where his thesis "Subject position and Information Literacy - a reinstallation of the subject" discussed information literacy and cases of prohibitional versus laissez faire use of social media in Danish high school.
Dr. Hjøllund has done research within digitization of children, youth, and education as well as notions of identity and how the 21st century can and do restructure both the individual and the social sphere.
He is member of the board in the research network BIN - Barnekultur i Norden (Children's culture in the Nordic countries). He is also a member of the Danish Society for Theoretical Psychoanalysis.
