From Insight to Action: Embedding Impact Evaluation in Technical Innovation in Education

This hands-on session guides participants through designing and implementing meaningful impact evaluations, combining theory with practical exercises. Using collaborative activities and guided frameworks, participants will learn how to define goals, engage stakeholders, collect and analyse data, and translate insights into actionable improvements. Participants will walk away with a clear starting point for their own evaluation plan, tools to involve stakeholders effectively, and strategies to use evidence for responsible, impactful innovation.

Esther Schut is an educational advisor and trainer at Risbo, Erasmus University Rotterdam, with a strong focus on impact evaluation in education. She sees evaluation as more than measuring outcomes - it is a collaborative process that reveals why and how innovations work, engages stakeholders, and drives sustainable, evidence-informed improvements. Alongside this work, Esther coordinates the University Delivery Qualification (UDQ) programme and designs creative, interactive learning experiences that make complex ideas accessible and inspire lasting change in teaching and learning.

Driven by the belief that education should be guided by evidence, Romy van Leeuwen helps to gain insight into what truly works, what doesn’t, and why. As a researcher and educational advisor at Risbo, Erasmus University Rotterdam, Romy leads and supports projects on impact evaluation of educational interventions, evaluation of bachelor and master programmes, and studies the effect of educational innovations. She develops qualitative and quantitative measurement tools, collects and analyses data, and delivers clear, tailored reports and presentations for policymakers and stakeholders. In addition to her research, she advises educators, provides teacher training, and designs visual materials to make knowledge sharing more effective. As both researcher and educational advisor, Romy strives to bridge the gap between research and (educational) practice, to eventually help create education that makes a proven difference.
