Student Attitudes Towards Self-Directed Learning: Results of a Case Study from the MENA Region

This presentation showcases students’ attitudes toward self-directed learning in a course using open educational resources (OER). With a pedagogy of self-directed learning built into the pilot course, the case illustrates the various possibilities of “owning learning” in a digital age, in a specific MENA context. Hear about feedback on key dimensions such as levels of satisfaction, effectiveness of OERs, quality rating of OERs and student self-assessment of academic success.
Fawzi Baroud
Assistant Vice President for Information Technology, Notre Dame University - Louaize, Lebanon
Over a period spanning 25 years, Dr. Fawzi Baroud has been engaged in promoting technology as a pedagogical tool tied to meeting educational objectives and assessment of learning outcomes in higher education. Specialized in eLearning, systems management, mathematics and electrical engineering, he combines numerous areas of academic expertise for advancing the use of technology in different curricular content areas.
As the Assistant Vice President for Information Technology at Notre Dame University – Louaize (NDU) in Lebanon, Dr. Baroud leads in the campus-wide planning and implementation of information technologies that support teaching and learning, including training faculty members to integrate educational technology in their teaching.
As champion of open education on campus, Dr. Baroud has made the integration of Open Educational Resources (OER) a key strategic goal of the University. Under his watch, NDU became an institutional affiliate of Creative Commons, and he is currently in the process of formulating policies for the successful use of OER in teaching and learning. He conducts seminars and hands-on workshops on open education and open licensing at leading Lebanese higher education institutions and has become a reference point on the subject.
Dr. Baroud has published several studies on eLearning and Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) use in education, participated in conferences, coauthored the informatics national curriculum for Lebanon, and offered consultancy to academic institutions. His research centers on the use, integration and evaluation of ICT, OER, and eLearning implementation in higher educational contexts.

Nives Kreuh is a Head of e-learning at the National Education Institute in Slovenia. She is doing the national research, strategy planning and implementation of new curricula through teacher continuous professional development in the field of digital pedagogy and e-learning.
She was leading the national E-competent teacher project in which they designed the standard of e-competent teacher, principle and ICT coordinators in schools framework called The Way towards E-competency. She focused on designing key e-competencies and developing the efficient training model called The Way towards E-competency, leading the instructional design and online courses (MOOCs) development for in-service teacher training and professional development to raise pedagogical digital literacy in schools nationwide.
She is the Head of Programme and Organising Committe of the international SIRikt* conference (*Enabling Education and Research with ICT), which is the largest educational conference in Slovenia with around 1000 delegates each year.
She also works internationally as the national expert and is the author of E-Competent Teacher, Principle and IT expert Framework and Designing E-Student Books Framework.
