XXX CANCELLED The impact upon Universal Design for Learning (UDL) of emerging and innovative technologies

Date Friday, Nov 25 Time   –   RoomKnig BR 24

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is an approach to provide instruction aimed at meeting the needs of all participants in a learning environment. UDL is based on three primary principles of providing multiple means of engagement, action/expression and representation. These principles lay the foundation to redevelop curriculum and teaching strategies that address all learners’ needs. The role of accessible technology within UDL involves the implementation of digital tools that support the three main principles of UDL. Traditional examples of the integration of technology into UDL have included the use of screen reader technologies for those with visual impairments or reading difficulties and magnification/zoom features in operating systems and smart phones (Meyer, Rose, & Gordan, 2014). However, the pace of change in accessible and assistive technologies has accelerated in recent years with an increased awareness of emerging technologies offering a model of disruptive innovation into education that could impact the delivery and implementation of UDL in educational settings.

This presentation explores technologies that are anticipated to impact future UDL models and delivery, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), Augmented Reality (AR), robotics, 3D printing, and location-based services. It will also discuss connections between the technologies and UDL principles, suggesting needed changes to support more inclusive instructional design.
