Game-Based Learning and Games in the Classroom
This panel will bring together government officials, industry leaders, teachers and experts in the field. The panelists will discuss the latest trends in GBL, its use and availability, as well as tips, tricks and best practices for implementing it.
Amber Muenzenberger, Director of Learning at Triseum. Amber has over 11 years of experience of working with administration and faculty to adopt innovative teaching and distance education methodologies. In her current role, she works collaboratively with a game design team to infuse educational pedagogy and research into serious games. As part of her job she works with a global network of teachers and faculty to implement the Triseum suite of games in the classroom and conduct research game-based learning. She has presented over 50 presentations, papers and workshops at international conferences. Amber is also the president for the Texas Distance Learning Association, that largest state association in the United States Distance Learning Association.
Mr. Thomas is founder and CEO of Triseum. His passion for game-based learning resonates inside and outside of the classroom. With more than 20 years of CGI production, he has worked around the world on legendary video games, live action feature films and gripping commercials. He served as the Head of Graphics for EA Sports Football (including NCAA, Head Coach, NFL Tour and Madden, the longest running and most successful sports franchise in the history of video games) and is also credited with creating graphics for such notable films as Men in Black, Con Air, Independence Day, and Tomorrow Never Dies.
Today, Andre shares his insight, ideas, and overall love for gaming across academia. He founded and serves as the Director of the LIVE lab in the Department of Visualization at Texas A&M University, where he also teaches game design game development, and interactive graphics techniques. In 2014, he founded Triseum and currently serves as the CEO, inspiring student and faculty though immersive, engaging and fun learning experiences. Additionally Andre was recently appointed to the advisory board at the National Academy of Science. He was named the EdTech Leadership award winner and is a renowned speaker at education and technology events, including SxSW, ASU GSV, and EDUCAUSE.
University of Thessaly, Greece
Hariklia Tsalapatas is a software engineer at the University of Thessaly, Greece since 2000. She has a Diploma in Computer Engineering from the University of Patras, Greece (1990), an MSc Degree in Computer Science from Rice University, Houston, TX (1994), and an MBA from London Business School (2005). She has been working on ICT in education since 2000 focusing on combining technology with emerging learning methodologies including active, experiential, explorative, and collaborative learning. Over the past 6 years she has been active on serious games in education, mobile learning, and community-based learning. She has participated in 20 EU funded projects since 2000 several of which she has coordinated. She has published approximately 40 publications in the same timeframe. Earlier engagements inlcude working as a researcher at the Foundation for Research and Technology in Heraklion Crete (1998-2000) and as a network engineer for Oracle corporation, SF, California (1993-1997).
Adtalem Global Education, USA
Jim Kiggens is the Director, Engaged Learning Technologies at Adtalem Global Education. He leads the game production team that develops and supports game-based learning for Adtalem Global Education institutions.
Jim has over 25 years of experience in producing and developing game-based learning for higher education, middle and secondary school, and corporate training. In addition to shipping 29 Serious Games titles and founding two game studio companies, Jim has also over 22 years of experience in instructional design, product development, and teaching digital animation and game development at several colleges and universities.
Prior to joining Adtalem Global Education, Jim held the post as the Associate Director for Digital Game-Based Learning, Center for Technological Literacy, Hofstra University. He was the founding director of the Serious Game Design Institute and the Project Director for the Mobile Media Institute NSF (ATE) project at Santa Barbara City College. He was the founding Director of the Academy of Digital Animation at Cerro Coso College, the program designer and founding Department Chair in Multimedia at Mt. San Jacinto College, and the designer of the multimedia programs at Victor Valley College and Mesa College in San Diego.
Jim has a Master of Science Degree in Education with an option in Online Teaching and Learning from California State University, East Bay. He also attended the Master of Science Degree Program in Educational Leadership at The George Washington University. Jim’s Bachelor’s Degree in Technical Education is from National University.
