Advantages and Disadvantages of Online Teaching in Engineering

University Politehnica of Bucharest is offering engineering study programms on bachelor, master and PhD level. Although online support was permanently used in our education processes, total online, real-time teaching is a challenge for us. The “IT in aviation” interdisciplinary master study program developed within an KA-ERASMUS project is a good basis for presenting advantages and disadvantages of online education in engineering. The program combines two distinct specializations: IT and aviation and responds to specific requirements of the labour market, targeting students with different bachelor backgrounds. Thus, IT represents both subject of study and means for carrying out the program. The online teaching environment allows participation of students and teaching staff from different countries and offers additional advantages detailed in the presentation. Difficulties in building specific hands-on abilities and competences as well as performing the most appropriate evaluation are disadvantages of online teaching in engineering.
Mariana Mocanu
University Professor, University Politehnica of Bucharest, Romania
Prof. Mariana Mocanu, Ph.D. (with habilitation) (female) is professor at University Politehnica of Bucharest and was Head of the Computer Science and Engineering Department between 2016 and 2020. She is member of the University Senate and of the Faculty Board.
Prof. Mocanu coordinates the “e-Government” master study program. She was part of the team that implemented the National Qualification Framework in Romania and participated in numerous European and Romanian projects related to curricula development and quality assurance in higher education.
Her main research interests include Interoperable products and services for decision support, based on geospatial data; Developing information systems for industrial and economic processes; System engineering and Project management. She has published over 100 scientific papers, the works being quoted over 350 times. She was coordinator of the H2020 Twinning project: Data4Water (2016-2018). Prof. Mocanu is co-author of 2 patents.
