Putting Ethical Behaviour at the Centre of Learning

What’s commonly called “ethical behaviour” has so many manifestations that it’s probably impossible to create anything approaching an exhaustive catalogue. Complicating the issue is that “ethical behaviour” varies across cultures. Does this mean that seeking to create a learning experience that comprises a conscious attempt to develop ethical global citizens - without formally defining what “ethical” means - is somehow a wasted effort?
To this Panel, the answer is clearly “no”. Come and add to our discussion about infusing learning with a real-world ethical component.

Global Youth Action Alliance - Connecting Young People by Working on Seventeen Global Goals
Ann S. Michaelsen is a teacher /administrator at Sandvika High School in Norway. She is the author of the blog “Connected teaching and learning” where she shares lesson plans and articles about learning with technology. She was a member of the 2013 Horizon Norway Advisory Board, 2014 Scandinavian Horizon board, and the 2014 Horizon Report Europe Advisory Board. In 2012 she wrote the book “Connected Learners: A Step-by-Step Guide to Creating a Global Classroom” with 27 high school students. She spoke at Bett in London 2014 and was recognized by BBC News technology and BBC Click. The result was an article on BBC News and a team of reporters from BBC Click and BBC school report visited her school, this was aired on BBC World. She has written a book for teachers in Norway published by Cappelen Damm in 2015. In 2016 Sandvika high school was awarded the most innovative school in Norway.

Promoting Global Citizenship Education Using a MOOC and Digital Storytelling
Achilles D. Kameas is Professor of Pervasive Systems with Hellenic Open University, Director of DAISSy Research Group and Vice Chair of the Board of ALL DIGITAL European network. He pioneered the realization of the Ambient Intelligence vision; nowadays he contributes to creating an inclusive society via the development of technology and the improvement of digital skills and scientific knowledge of citizens. Achilles has participated in more than 30 EU and national projects (coordinated more than 10 of them), has published over 150 articles, papers and chapters, and authored / co-edited more than ten books. He has contributed to the standardization of European e-competences framework, the application of DigComp framework and the development of ESCO. His current interests include learning platforms and MOOCs, education for inclusive society, flexible learning pathways, STEM education, digital and ICT competence frameworks, Internet of Things and mobile computing systems.

Inge de Waard (PhD) is currently leading the learning part of an InnoEnergy project that alleviates skill and competency gaps by combining machine learning, artificial intelligence (AI), learning analytics and learning design. This project combines the expertise of people working for InnoEnergy, The Open University (UK), FutureLearn and many European University partners working on renewable energy.
Since 1999, she has set-up, coordinated and developed several online, blended and mobile learning projects, always with a focus on participation and durability. These projects involved partners and individuals from both the Northern (Canada, United States, Italy, Belgium, Ireland, Germany, UK) and Southern regions (South-Africa, India, Peru, Morocco). As an avid enthusiast of open science, she is an active international speaker giving keynotes and guest lectures, as well as providing and receiving knowledge input through seminars, SIGs and workshops.
Enlightened by the first connectivist MOOCs, she set up the first MOOC on mobile learning, called MobiMOOC (2011 & 2012). This was a community and project-oriented MOOC, enabling international learners to realize their own project by the end of the MOOC.
Her core sentiment on learning is: “I have come to realize that there is no single solution for all. The diversity which is at the core of nature’s success, is replicated by the diversity in learning preferences and ways to achieve learning success in humans”.
