OEB Spotlight Stage: Our New Digital World and Culture: Getting Beyond the Metaphors (Natives, Immigrants, Visitors, Residents and More) to the Realities

Our relationship with the digital is complex, multifaceted and personal. In our attempts to come to an understanding of how we relate to, and engage with, the digital environment we have developed a number of simple metaphors. These have proved popular but they are limited and have often been used in over simplified ways to justify techno-solutionist approaches or twisted into reasons not to change institutional cultures: “The young people understand all this technology so we don’t have to”. Moving beyond this, the panel will imagine a redesigned higher education sector by describing the key attributes successful students need to thrive in a world where digital comes first. How can we create institutions where relevant digital capabilities, behaviours, practices and skills are integral to teaching? What principles should this newly imagined education be built on?
Marc Prensky

Marc Prensky, coiner of the term “Digital Native,” is an internationally acclaimed speaker, author, consultant and “practical visionary,” promoting civilization-level change in global education. Marc has spoken in over 40 countries, authored seven books, and published over 100 essays; his writing has been translated into 11 languages. He is currently the founder and Executive Director of the Global Future Education Foundation and Institute. Marc’s latest book, Education to Better Their World: Unleashing the Power of 21st Century Kids (Columbia TC Press, 2016), is a finalist for the 2016 Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Awards in Education.

David is Head of DigitalLearning at the University of the Arts London. He researches individuals’ motivation to engage online for learning using his ‘Visitors and Residents’ paradigm. This work has given him a good understanding of the changing nature of learning and the impact of the Web on the education sector. David has led national and international studies discovering exactly how people go about learning in the Web era and can often be found communicating his findings and thoughts via all means available including keynotes, blog-posts and videos.

Wilfred Rubens (1964) currently works as an independent consultant on technology enhanced learning. He provides advice, keynotes, presentations, workshops and classes about technology enhanced learning. Wilfred has been professionally involved in e-learning for more than 20 years. For more than 12 years he blogs about ICT and learning. June 2013 he published a book about elearning trends and developments (in Dutch). In 2015 he was co-author of a book about social learning. Wilfred is also one of the editors of the Dutch portal e-learning.nl, member of the advisory board of the anual Dutch Next Learning conference and member of the advisory board of the ONLINE EDUCA BERLIN.
