Brexit: a looming obstacle to progress in education or a new opportunity?
Education experts and entrepreneurs at OEB, Europe’s largest conference on technology assisted learning, will discuss the likely consequences of Brexit for the education sector and the digital single market at this year’s event, held at Berlin’s Hotel Intercontinental from 30 November to 2 December.
In a special session on ‘European Education, Technology and Identity after Brexit’, conference participants will look at how Brexit is likely to affect the education and technology sectors. They will also consider the effect of Brexit on European identity and other important cultural issues.
Former UK Member of Parliament Harold Elletson, who will chair the session, said:
“Whatever else it is, Brexit is a source of great uncertainty and instability. The European Union has played a major role in shaping education across our continent and the development of the digital single market, which was championed by the United Kingdom, promises huge benefits for learners and for the creative industries. However, Brexit now places a big question mark over the future. It is a looming obstacle ahead of us, which could impede progress in education in many areas and take away many of the important rights and opportunities students, researchers and educators enjoy.
“We’ll be looking at the current situation and assessing what is likely to happen. We’ll be asking what a ‘hard Brexit’ might mean for education and whether there is any way around the obstacles that Brexit could put in the path of progress.”
Speakers in the session will include Gordon Slaven, who until October was the Head of Higher Education and Education Services at the British Council.
The session will take place at 16.30 on Friday December 2 at the Hotel Intercontinental. For more information, please contact @email
