Learning at Work: How It Is Changing and the New Role of the L&D Professional

The Learning Technologies Opening Conversation is where leading thinkers and practitioners in our field consider some of the major questions in workplace learning and development. Where can we deliver most value? What role do digital tools play? What design techniques should we be using? And we will also consider things at a strategic level, asking what shape the profession is likely to take over the coming years, and how we can prepare for a new world of L&D with a broader, more strategic role than ever.

Dr. Nick van Dam
He is an internationally recognized thought leader, adviser, researcher, author, and speaker on learning innovation and leadership development. Nick is a partner, Global Chief Learning Officer (CLO), and Client Adviser at McKinsey. Over the course of his professional career, Nick has served more than 100 clients around the world. He is also a professor at Nyenrode Business Universiteit (The Netherlands) and IE University (Spain), and an adjunct professor at the University of Pennsylvania, where he works with candidates in the executive doctoral program for Chief Learning Officers. Prior to joining McKinsey, he was partner, Global Chief Learning Officer, HR Executive and Director of Human Capital for Deloitte and L&D Consultant and Executive for Siemens.
Nick has written articles for various publications and has been quoted by Financial Times, Wall Street Journal, Fortune Magazine, Business Week, India Times, Information Week, Management Consulting, CLO Magazine, and TD Magazine.He has authored and coauthored more than 25 books and numerous articles on innovations in learning and leadership development. His latest book (2018) ‘Elevating Learning & Development: Insights and Practical Guidance from The Field’. Several of his books have been translated in Mandarin, Portuguese and Dutch.
He is board member of ICEDR the world’s premier network in global talent management, leadership development and strategic change. Additionally, he is a board member of the AACSB and advisory board member of edX, which is a nonprofit founded by Harvard and MIT who bridges the gap between education and employment.
Nick has the received the 2012 ‘Lifetime Learning Leadership Award’ for his contributions to innovation and learning from The MASIE Center, an internationally-recognized think tank focused on workforce education and performance
Under the patronage of of the European Parliament Federal Ministry of Education & Research, he received the 2013 Leonardo European Corporate Learning Award for ‘shaping the future of organizational learning and leadership development’.
He is the founder of the e-Learning for Kids Foundation, which has provided digital lessons for more than 20 million underprivileged elementary school children. (www.e-learningforkids.org)
Dr. van Dam is a graduate of the Vrije Universiteit van Amsterdam, Bachelor Degree in Education, Economics and Business Economics, and holds a Master of Arts Degree in Social Sciences from the Universiteit van Amsterdam. He earned his Doctorate in Human Capital Development at Nyenrode Business Universiteit, Breukelen, The Netherlands.

For more than two decades, Sabrina Schulze has worked in various management positions in the field of Knowledge Management and Digital Learning. In her current role as Head of New Learning Solutions and Business Excellence at DB Training, Learning & Consulting she defines and implements a digitalization strategy for DB Training, including definition and implementation of digital business models, new media solutions as well as a new learning management system for Deutsche Bahn AG. Her current focus is to enable employees to cope with the exponential pace of change for technology by providing sustainable learning environments based on digital learning.

Donald H Taylor is a 25 year veteran of the learning, skills and human capital industries, with experience at every level from design and delivery to chairman of the board. He has been chairman of the Learning and Performance Institute since 2010.
A recognised commentator and organiser in the fields of workplace learning and learning technologies, Donald is passionately committed to helping develop the learning and development profession.
His background ranges from training delivery to director and vice-president positions in software companies. Donald has been a company director and shareholder for three companies through start up, growth and acquisition.
He is an influential writer and speaker in the fields of the professional development of L&D and of technology-supported learning. He was the 2007 recipient of the Colin Corder award for services to training and has chaired the Learning Technologies Conference since 2000. He also chairs the Learning and Skills Group, hosting its bi-weekly webinar programme, and edits Inside Learning Technologies Magazine. He is a graduate of Oxford University and in 2016 was awarded an honorary doctorate by Middlesex University in recognition of his work developing the L&D profession.
