Video Communities: Lessons Learnt for International, Intergenerational, Intercultural Knowledge Sharing

Schools using video to connect learners across the globe are not new. What is unique about the different projects highlighted in this session is how they have managed to excite and involve learners by doing more than just sharing content. They have also managed to create a sense of community.
Eric Hamilton
Professor of Education, Pepperdine University, USA
Research on an International Network for Digital Media Making and Student-Led Participatory Teaching
Eric Hamilton is a professor of education at Pepperdine University, with courtesy appointment in mathematics. He specializes in research around creation and use of interactive digital media. His main current work involves leading a research effort with sites in the US, Finland, Namibia, Kenya, Mexico, and India, connecting adolescents in a virtual digital makerspace to study participatory teaching and international collaboration.
Hamilton recently led a major initiative of US and Finnish governments in education innovation and technology, and he recently completed a Fulbright Research Fellowship in Namibia. Originally tenured in computer science and mathematics at Loyola Chicago, he led an award-winning citywide consortium to promote underrepresented minorities in STEM professions. He served as division director at the US National Science Foundation, and research center director at the US Air Force Academy. Hamilton studied at Northwestern and the University of Chicago.

Speaking Exchange Program: Technology Approaching Teenagers and Foreign Seniors
Luciana Locks has worked at Language Institutes for 25 years, and at the moment she works at the CNA Headquarters in Brazil. She holds a BA in Languages and specialization certificates. She is a teacher trainer and manages a group of consultants. Editor of an annual publication of articles in the area of Education, Communication and Management. One of the projects she is most proud of is the one called Speaking Exchange in which students have conversation sessions with elderly people in the United States and Canada.

Herwig Rehatschek

Dr. Herwig Rehatschek studied Computer Science and Electronics and received his M.Sc. and his Ph.D. from the University of Technology, Graz. From 1997 until 2008 he worked at the non-profit research company JOANNEUM RESEARCH. His main emphasis was on eLearning and digital media analysis. He participated in many international EC projects and also managed and co-ordinated some of them. In 1999 Dr. Rehatschek won the Austrian state price in the category learning, knowledge and culture. In 2008 he joined the Medical University of Graz (MUG) as a head of the section organization of teaching including the virtual medical campus, the eLearning platform of the university. Since then he was actively involved in the set-up and implementation of the LMS and the development of learning content. He introduced virtualized lessons, a new virtual microscope, eLectures, and non-linear story telling in medical education. Recently he works on the set-up of an automated lecture recording system. He actively participated in the development of an eLearning training program for teachers provided by all nine universities in the federal state of Styria. He won in 2012 the Dr. Michael Hasiba price for innovative teaching, in 2017 he won the Austrian state prize “Ars Docendi” for innovative teaching for the implementation of a non-linear story telling concept for education in first aid.
