Children grow up in a world where digital tools are present from the very beginning. These tools can support learning and development, but timing, balance and context are crucial. The HERMMES project (Holistic Education, Resilience and Media Maturity in Educational Settings) brings together educators, parents, and researchers across Europe to develop resources and a curriculum for learners aged 0–18. Its approach, analogue before digital, producing before consuming, and understanding technology before using it, helps children build digital competences while safeguarding wellbeing and nurturing uniquely human capacities such as creativity, empathy, and critical thinking.
