This can help them make sense of what, otherwise, could be both confusing and costly.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>What are online learning\u2019s current and future trends? What\u2019s now possible? Who\u2019s using these technologies? What results are they getting? How much do these technologies cost? What return on investment could you reasonably expect? And \u2013 importantly \u2013 where is there a reliable <strong><em>independent<\/em><\/strong> source for this (and more) business intelligence?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To meet this need, six independent online learning technologies specialists from around the world formed <a href=\"http:\/\/companyofthought.com\/\">The Company of Thought<\/a> (TCoT) in June 2015. A high level international think tank, TCoT aims to report and comment on trends within the corporate online learning technologies industry worldwide, independent of any vested interests. It:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Has many years\u2019 collective experience of this sector around the world<\/li>\n<li>Does continual worldwide research, including data mining and business intelligence<\/li>\n<li>Produces generic reports, guides and newsletters<\/li>\n<li>Produces reports that are specific to the needs of particular customers<\/li>\n<li>Uses its \u2018special relevance algorithm\u2019 to match LearnTech buyers with sellers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It produces a freely available monthly newsletter \u2013 available via its <a href=\"http:\/\/companyofthought.com\/\">website<\/a> \u2013 but its clients pay for quarterly reports that provide more detailed market news and insights. The current quarterly report covers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Virtual \/ Augmented Reality (VR\/ AR)<\/li>\n<li>Wearables in e-learning<\/li>\n<li>The Internet of Things (IoT) in e-learning<\/li>\n<li>Gamification<\/li>\n<li>Learning Management Systems (LMSs)<\/li>\n<li>The E-learning Market and Trends<\/li>\n<li>Agile Learning<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There\u2019s also a \u2018TCoT Special Report\u2019 on \u2018The Rise of Professional Organizations As Key Stakeholders in the Provision of Education and Training\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>TCoT\u2019s analysis of these topics contains some commercially sensitive information but, in discussing these issues, the latest TCoT report states \u2013 among <strong><em>many <\/em><\/strong>other things:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Virtual \/ Augmented Reality (VR\/AR)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>At the Learning Technologies event, in London, many organisations showed their e-learning VR applications. Siyona Tech was the only one also showing the potential of AR, with their Epson glass powered origami-making application.<\/li>\n<li>The first commercially available VR\/AR devices have entered the consumer and developer markets, with price tags in the range of US$800 to US$1000. The devices have appeal in the gaming space as well as in the automotive and medical industries. Further devices will enter the market this year but test kits have often proved to be \u2018clunky\u2019 and in need of further development.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Wearables in e-learning<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The e-learning potential of wearables is enormous, and is only just starting to be explored.\u00a0AR options for on-the-job training using, for example, Google Glass or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/microsoft-hololens\/en-us\">Microsoft HoloLens<\/a><u>,<\/u> are an obvious application &#8211; and some <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techrepublic.com\/article\/how-nasa-uses-virtual-reality-to-train-astronauts\/\">first steps<\/a> have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pipelineandgasjournal.com\/virtual-reality-3d-training-pipeline-employees\">been taken<\/a>.\u00a0Other possibilities include using a FitBit-like tracker (<a href=\"http:\/\/theatro.com\/\">Theatro<\/a> is an example) to help train employees in their tasks (there are applications for this technology in the retail sector, among others). Then there\u2019s combining wearable data with the xAPI (Tin Can Experience) to track learning activities that happen away from a desk.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The Internet of Things (IoT) in e-learning<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Make Movement gained attention in 2015. Educators are bringing Maker activities to their classrooms with inclusions such as 3D printing, classroom coding, arts integration and design thinking. Concepts such as Maker Lab, <a href=\"http:\/\/wciw.org\/how-to-celebrate-world-creativity-and-innovation-week\/how-to-celebrate-wciw\/wciw-at-school\/\">Creativity &amp; Innovation Week<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.geniushour.com\/2015\/01\/21\/free-course-complete-guide-genius-hour-20-time-classroom\/\">20% Time and Genius Hour<\/a> are being increasingly incorporated in teaching spaces.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Gamification <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cisco Systems, has seen success with its revolutionary <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gamification.co\/2014\/02\/05\/cisco-drives-social-media-training-gamification\/\">Social Media Training Program<\/a> for its employees and contractors. This e-learning system guides trainees through over 46 courses that teach social media skills, including improving security and driving user engagement. Cisco <a href=\"http:\/\/elearningbrothers.com\/4-top-elearning-training-development-trends-2016\/\">reported<\/a> a dramatic increase in registration and participation following the debut of its gamified instruction system. More than 650 people have certified in the program and have, collectively, completed over 13,000 courses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Learning Management Systems (LMSs)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There\u2019s consolidation in the UK \u2013 with content providers\/developers buying LMS vendors. There are price wars in the USA. There\u2019s expansion into Asia Pacific, specifically the Asia region \u2013 notably in China, South Korea, India, Japan and Malaysia.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0The E-learning Market and Trends<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Off-the-shelf course prices have spiralled downwards and new business models have emerged to let companies\u2019 access large libraries of e-learning at low cost. Lynda, Open Sesame, Grovo and Degreed are active in the UK.
