Exploring a diverse range topics such as mLearning, design and delivery, digital storytelling, and personal learning environments, participants will have the chance to take part in discussions and activities where they can learn and share new skills. We\u2019ve been in touch with some of the industry experts who will be hosting pre-conference workshops to find out more about what to expect.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Today, in the US, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cisco.com\/web\/about\/ac79\/edu\/trends\/issue01.html\" target=\"_blank\">97%<\/a> of students have some form of phone (smart or cell), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bradfordnetworks.com\/new-survey-finds-85-percent-of-educational-institutions-allow-byod-despite-security-concerns\/\" target=\"_blank\">85%<\/a> of higher education institutions allow some form of\u00a0\u201cbring your own device\u201d\u00a0(BYOD) on their school networks (only 44% K-12), and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/report-new-mcgraw-hill-education-research-finds-more-than-80-percent-of-students-use-mobile-technology-to-study-300047130.html\" target=\"_blank\">81%<\/a> of students use mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets to study.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Given these statistics alone, it makes sense for educators to explore the possibilities of mLearning. \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/oeb.global\/programme\/agenda\/sessions\/a6\" target=\"_blank\">The mobile academy\u2019<\/a> workshop, led by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.quinnovation.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Clark Quinn<\/a> from Quinnovation, will focus on helping attendees think differently about mobile learning by focusing on mLearning design. Quinn is a leader in learning-technology strategy, who assists organisations in taking advantage of information systems to meet learning, knowledge, and performance needs.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToo often mLearning is thought of as a more convenient way to access content, but the reality of device-usage patterns makes mLearning more conducive to short and focused applications,\u201d remarks Quinn.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He says that mLearning can augment traditional education in a number of ways, including \u201cshort stories or quizzes created in many authoring tools and delivered via the LMS. And, of course, having learners generate and share content via mobile is being seen as a vehicle to scaffold conversations: for example, capturing their thoughts or actions and sharing feedback.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The full-day <a href=\"https:\/\/oeb.global\/programme\/agenda\/sessions\/fd5\">Speexx Exchange<\/a> focuses on what successful organisations are doing in terms of HR, learning, and talent-management strategies. <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.speexx.com\/blog\/creating-meaningful-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\">Speexx\u2019s annual audit<\/a> of global CXOs, HR, L&amp;D professionals, and training consultants found that 45% of respondents said that \u201cflexibility and instant accessibility\u201d were key advantages, and almost a third of respondents plan to spend over thirty percent of their training budget on e-learning or blended learning. However, mobile learning in the workplace was hampered by a \u201clack of integration,\u201d \u201cno BYOD policy in place\u201d, and \u201ccorporate data-security issues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Writing for the company blog, Armin Hopp, Founder and President of Speexx, says that \u201cthese figures suggest that managers need to do much more to promote blended, social, and mobile learning within their organisations and to back HR and L&amp;D managers along the way.\u00a0At the same time, none of this can really flourish if there isn\u2019t a solid learning strategy in place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Hopp also recommends that \u201cthe integration of multilingual and multicultural workers into an overall business strategy is crucial to sustain and grow a business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Speexx Exchange experts will give participants exclusive, first-hand insights into and practical tips about rolling out global e-learning projects at Credit Suisse; fostering 70:20:10 and collaborative approaches at LG Electronics; maximising talent at Adecco; developing successful competency models at Linde: and many more examples.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>At OEB in 2013, Craig Weiss said: \u201cThe biggest problem facing online learning is boring content.\u201d Find out what\u2019s changed in the past two years in his pre-conference afternoon workshop focusing on <strong>\u2018<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/oeb.global\/programme\/agenda\/sessions\/a2\">Higher education learning<\/a><strong>.\u2019<\/strong> Weiss will be exploring the pros and cons of MOOCs and helping participants create their own effective higher education strategy.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A team of educators from the University of Northampton led by Alejandro Armellini will be holding a hands-on workshop called \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/oeb.global\/programme\/agenda\/sessions\/fd3\" target=\"_blank\">From values to quality<strong>\u2019<\/strong><\/a>, in which participants will learn strategies to move towards the design and delivery of blended-learning courses in a UK university.\u00a0Participants will draft a storyboard to re-design a specific campus-based course for delivery in blended-learning mode. This exciting, collaborative workshop will draw on current practice at the University of Northampton.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>These are just four of the pre-conference workshops on offer at this year\u2019s OEB conference.
