You surveyed the participating kids at the beginning and end of the program to determine how their attitudes about science may have changed. You believe the data shows a great success story, and you want to continue the program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But if you\u2019re headed into this presentation thinking you just want to tell folks about it, then fuggetaboutit. 99% of the time, you\u2019re not merely informing your audience; you\u2019re&nbsp;<em>persuading<\/em>&nbsp;them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the 4th grade science teacher, who might your audience be? The angle you take for each audience will be different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Parents of students who participated: You\u2019re persuading them it was worthwhile.<\/li><li>Parents of prospective students: You\u2019re persuading them this program is THE pathway to a successful career and adulthood.<\/li><li>Other teachers who might be running a similar program or would like to: You\u2019re persuading them to do it.<\/li><li>The budget committee that controls the funding for your program: You\u2019re persuading them to give you money.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In each of these cases, you must narrow down your argument into one sentence that articulates your unique point of view and conveys what\u2019s at stake. Nancy Duarte calls this the \u201cBig Idea.\u201d<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s say you\u2019re presenting to the budget committee and advocating for more funding. Here\u2019s an effective Big Idea:<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cThe pilot summer learning program was successful at improving students\u2019 perceptions of science and, because of this success, we recommend continuing to offer it going forward; please approve our budget for this program.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now what? In our next posts, we\u2019ll consider how to use data effectively and ethically to convince the budget committee to approve our budget request.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Part 2: Present Data<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Clean water is necessary for biological life to survive. We need it to live and stay healthy\u2026but what if it\u2019s evil?<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Water can be extracted from rocket fuel.<\/li><li>Water is the main ingredient in pesticides.<\/li><li>Water is the #1 cause of drowning.<\/li><li>100% of people exposed to water will die.<br><br><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Sure, all of the above are true, but that doesn\u2019t mean you should avoid water \u2014 that would be impossible, anyway! These are instances of presenting data unethically.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So how can you present data ethically? First, consider your message. The facts may not be distorted, but the way the information is presented may be altered to intentionally or unintentionally exaggerate or understate the facts.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are a few unethical strategies to avoid when you present data in graphs and charts.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Truncated Axis<\/u><\/strong><br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this case, the Y-axis does not start at zero, so the data is exaggerated.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/oeb.global\/oeb-insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/artible1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"548\" src=\"https:\/\/oeb.global\/oeb-insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/artible1-1024x548.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11337\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oeb.global\/oeb-insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/artible1-1024x548.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/oeb.global\/oeb-insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/artible1-300x160.jpg 300w, https:\/\/oeb.global\/oeb-insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/artible1-768x411.jpg 768w, https:\/\/oeb.global\/oeb-insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/artible1-1536x822.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/oeb.global\/oeb-insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/artible1-750x400.jpg 750w, https:\/\/oeb.global\/oeb-insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/artible1.jpg 1909w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In the charts below, the differences between the interest rates are negligible \u2014 they\u2019re 0.002% different from one another. But the chart on the left is much different than the chart on the right because the Y-axis begins at 3.140% on the left.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Takeaway<\/strong>: Start your Y-axis at zero like the chart on the right.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Area as Quantity<\/u><\/strong><br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With area as quantity, the data is distorted because the area of the bars or pieces within the chart that represent the data don\u2019t match their values.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the chart below, the people on welfare and the people with a full-time job are not significantly different \u2014 only 6.9 million \u2014 but the chart, whose X and Y axes are not labeled, makes it seem like a much more significant difference.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/oeb.global\/oeb-insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/artible1-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"550\" src=\"https:\/\/oeb.global\/oeb-insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/artible1-1-1024x550.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oeb.global\/oeb-insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/artible1-1-1024x550.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/oeb.global\/oeb-insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/artible1-1-300x161.jpg 300w, https:\/\/oeb.global\/oeb-insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/artible1-1-768x412.jpg 768w, https:\/\/oeb.global\/oeb-insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/artible1-1-1536x824.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/oeb.global\/oeb-insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/artible1-1.jpg 1895w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Takeaway<\/strong>: Make the area of bars, circles, or whatever you use to represent the data proportional to the values of the data.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Correlation as Causation<\/u><\/strong><br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes when we see a chart whose data almost matches, it can be easy to think that one thing caused the other.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this example, the data might lead you to think that the increase in murders caused more people to buy ice cream, or that murders increased because more people bought ice cream. It\u2019s more likely they aren\u2019t causally related at all. One didn\u2019t cause the other; it\u2019s simply a coincidence that they seem related. That means the two are correlated, not causal.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Takeaway<\/strong>: In similar data, one thing might not have caused another; they could be simply correlated (coincidental).<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For more funny examples, visit&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/tylervigen.com\/spurious-correlations\" target=\"_blank\">Spurious Correlations<\/a>.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Aspect Ratio<\/u><\/strong><br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to pie charts, it can be difficult for the brain to interpret results.
